THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

*CONTAINS SPOILERS!!*

I just watched the end of Zaion and I think I understand the ending, but I'm a little confused ... did the two main characters die in the end?

It's not concrete, but it looks like one of those poetic deaths where they meet in heaven to be together.

I'm not sure and am open to any thoughts on this.

What do you think??

Can't say for sure, but that's prolly pretty likely. I very much doubt that they'd just let her leave if it was a worldwide epidemic. Maybe it's supposed to be open interpretation, like the end of EVA?

Thanks NabeShogun. It's always good to know that I'm not alone my theory.

And it's interesting that you brought up EVA as an example. :)

I was thinking Wolf's Rain at the time.

Never seen Wolf's Rain before, but yeah, pretty much everything can be related back to EVA, if you try hard enough. The more I think about it, it was a pretty bizzare ending, though. I'm fairly certain they died. Maybe.

Mmm.. I guess I'm satisfied with the ending.

I think they did both die or something..

LOL that cheap cliffhanger during the battle.

Happy end. Scientist lady seems to have lied about Ai losing her ability in order to free her from being a lab rat.

Did they both die? If so, how?

The ending kinda confused me but I think they are still alive and the scientist made up a report saying she lost her power. Because if the girl was dead, it wouldn't have been worded like that.
Still annoyingly vague.

Still, I wonder why the council seemed to be so obstructive to the point of being self sabotaging. Apparently, they do not want Earth to be infected so why do they keep picking such terrible decisions.

Two possibilities imo. Ai moved her mouth and was able to grip the dog statue after using all of her power. That implies she survived. At the same time, it left the protag to fight the uber-fusion monster by himself, and his victory was likely impossible. But then the other scientists also managed to escape, even though their helicopter was damaged. It seems odd they would escape without them.

On the other hand, the bright light at the end and the magic butterfly flying to the moon both heavily imply that they're dead. The fact that their bodies are glowing, and there's no discernable lightsource really point to that. And just how they would manage to escape the military, doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering the last escape attempt. The "ability lost" message could easily be a mistranslation, especially given that Misao is crying as she writes it. If Ai were alive, Misao would still be able to visit her in secret on days off. It's also not as weird when you consider the generals only thought of her as a weapon, so like "our giant laser capabilities were lost."

In the end, I think it's up to the viewer. Did they both die and reunite in the afterlife? Or are they fugitives on a quiet date night under a street lamp somewhere? This series certainly wasn't intended to be as deep or steeped in symbolism and metaphor as Eva or Wolf's Rain; so I doubt the creator was too terribly worried about how the audience perceived the last scene. It's a fun little popcorn flick not meant to be taken to seriously.

I personally think they died in battle; but it would be more satisfying if the outbreak in Japan was largely contained and they were able to live a quiet life together.

P.S. Let's not forget Tao deserves some lovin' too ^.-
