Anybody know if the international edition (pink box) blu ray has the Bandai dub or the ADV dub? It was released after the Bandai one was made so it could be either but I can't seem to find the info. I haven't heard the bandai dub but I doubt any dubbing could be better than the ADV one so I'd have to hear it before wanting to shell out the cash that international release costs.

ive got a copy of the international edition on bluray, its the bandai dub, and its far, far superior to the ADV dub, i also first heard the ADV dub from a torrent i downloaded, it was the default track, that torrent also had the Bandai dub on it too, and playing it back to back, its no contest.

Thank you so much for your quick reply eldest. What you say is encouraging and it has got me all the more excited about buying the blu ray of the movie. Right now I've got a crappy ripped from the DVD i got at the library version of 5 CM per second so I made the DVD menu and junk myself. I didn't buy the ADV release when I saw it for 20 bucks at the store then a few months later the damn thing is like 80 bucks so I figured I'd wait for the blu ray release. Fast forward to now and I'm feeling like buying it finally.

It's my favorite movie ever so I'm willing to spend the 80-90 dollars on the blu ray version, I'll try to find a sample of the bandai version online just to make sure I'll like it. It's not that I don't have confidence in Bandai's work but in my mind the movie is so perfect that any change could upset the balance. If not oh well I'm learning Japanese and can watch the japanese version. Thanks for your encouraging input.

no problem man, completely agree, its my favorite movie out too, well worth the 90 i spent on it, and its quite a shame that its never advertised, but the global edition also comes with voices of a distant star (subbed and dubbed), she and her cat and the main movie itself has Japanese+English audio and around 15 different subtitles in different languages, it really goes all out, and it has a nice little short booklet featuring an English translated interview with makoto shinkai, some of his thoughts about the movie and his works and some other interesting stuff. well worth the price. and its region free to boot. and when i watched it on my bluray drive on my PC, i tried something fun, i paused it during random parts and took a screenshot. people don't lie when they say every single frame is wallpaper worthy, especially so with the bluray.

Yeah my thinking is if ever there was a movie I wanted in high definition it would be this one. I screenshot some scenes on my computer when I was watching the DVD to use as backgrounds and they look amazing because of the artwork but were fuzzy I guess because of the upscaling. My computer has a Blu ray player in it so I'm excited to see what it looks like on there and maybe I can get some screenshots that have less fuzz to use as backgrounds.

I feel like if I buy the Blu ray for 90 bucks or whatever I can get it for they'll release a new version on blu ray for cheaper but at the same time the people who worked on the film deserve my 90 dollars (whatever they profit from the sale) for being so awesome. Thank you for the picture and the extra information. I'd love to see the interviews, I think I watched an interview with him after I saw the movie the first time but even though this movie was immediately my favorite movie after the first time I saw it I've come to appreciate it more the more times I watch it so I'd like to see his views on it.

Also it seems to me like no release of the movie has been printed in huge quantities (otherwise the other releases wouldn't all cost so much)

One of those short, but sweet movies you want a happy ending, but regardless if it isn't it's still amazing to watch. I liked it overall, I feel sorry for Kanae Sumida as she loved him yet he never realized her feelings? Or did, but didn't say anything. Both moved on. I don't know what happened with the office lady and them, but were they together? Rofl.

manga explains the office lady with her own chapter, her name was risa, and they were together for 3 years.
it also explains kanae a bit better too and gives her an extra chapter

Though, I'm not a big fan of romance story, this anime was simply stunning. Its melancholy and romanticism-filled atmosphere is unparalleled and the gorgeous landscapes of postmodernist fantasy are simply magnificent. This is truly the perfect combination of human emotions and creativity.

A fukken masterice, that's what it is.
I'm not normally that much into romance either, but this...this left me depressed (in a good way) for days.
Thankfully I found out the manga ending and it made me feel better:

manga ending made me happy, when i got to the final chapter, it pretty much told the story the exact way i wanted it to end.
would have been nice if this was in the movie too.

Well, Here's my reaction on to the Movie, The Character designs, art, BGM's and the animation were simply Amazing. I have No Complaints on that matter.

The Movie started off pretty nicely especially in the 1st half and a couple of minutes in it's 2nd half however, when i saw the last quarter or rather the ending, I was completely in a Shock like "That's it!? No More closure or anything?" That was completely annoying and fucked up. I was really disappointed. So many questions left unanswered. Horrible Ending (imo) No offense to all Pro-5cm people.

The Ending was completely a major drawback to the movie. 6-7/10

read the manga if you want closure. the movie was designed with the harshness of reality in mind, things dont always work out, thats what shinkai had in mind when he made this movie, and the ending pulled it off perfectly. if you look at it closely, the ending finally gives tohno the chance to move on, and the manga ties into that with an extra chapter im sure youll like.

Absolutely loved this movie. Pertaining to the main character, I feel as though this is the first movie about love where I connected / understood the main character to almost every degree, if not all. I just wanted to note this, and rate this movie as high as can be. It's the least I could do, for having Makoto Shinkai show me I'm not alone. Thank you again, for showing me there are people out there who understand.

After having recently seen The Place Promised in Our Early Days, I have to say I am disappointed by this one. Personally, I did not feel for any of the characters. There was a lack of emotion, most likely due to how the first relationship was handled to shallowly. If we had seen the characters earlier, just interacting, and their strong sense of wanting to meet each other, it would've been much better.

Since I didn't feel anything for what happened, even if I see what it was trying to convey, the whole movie goes to waste. It was okay, definitely, but not something I would label good.

A nice movie, but nothing I will remember.

Sadly.

the movie spends the whole first chapter showing how and why tohno and akari are together and why it meant so much when the were separated, and they spent a considerable amount of time on it considering the movie only goes for 1 hour. personally, i felt more emotion from the second chapter, since it wasn't something outside of their control like with akari (their parents moving) but just the fact that tohno couldn't accept what happened with akari, it made him ignore kanae without even realizing. i found it incredibly sad.

although, the place promised in our early days was a fantastic movie, and it really benefited from the longer run time. i personally think both movies, as well as voices of a distant star and to a lesser extent, children who chase lost voices from deep below are amongst the best anime movies out.

Just watched this since Crunchyroll had recently uploaded it.

What is this feeling building up within me after finish this? Is... is this disappointment? No... It feels more similar to the feeling of watching a NTR... Rage maybe...? Pissed off I guess might work.

The insert song kinda ruined the moment for me honestly.

Dam you Shinkai Makoto and your scenery porn! I'll watch his other works later as CR has those uploaded too.

good idea

in order of best to worst (worst still being a fantastic film)

the place promised in our early days (very, very good)
voices of a distant star (pretty much 5cm per second on an interstellar scale)
children who chase lost voices from deep below (very reminiscent of a ghibli film)

Sorry everybody, i'm not fan of sad ends, so , this is very disappointing, the 1st and 2nd episodes were so great, everything were excellent, but once i watched the 3rd, all that hope for a great ending was gone in only 5 min, my very poor Tohno, i admit, the hole work, i have nothing to say : animation, design, drawing, evolution of the story, OST , all were so perfect , but, the end, such torture , OMG !

I honestly loved the movie. The theme "Distance and Time " was very well done in the movie. Several things that I noticed in this episode: Akari had a ring which led me to believe she got married, she painted her nails which also strongly led me to believe she really did get married. Takaki on the other hand got to meet 2 very beautiful and caring people. We all know Akari and also the 2nd girl in episode 2. In the end Takaki lost both of them because the distance of his first love(Akari) proved too much for his emotions.

In episode two the girl truly loved Takaki, but sadly his feelings were never with her and instead with Akari. No matter how many messages he sent Takaki knew that distance would always interfere. Climate also played a huge factor here because if the weather was ok then more likely Takaki would have been able to meet up with Akari earlier(Episode 1).

I am truly sad at the way the movie ended because I expected that warm and happy ending. This movie needed that predictable outcome of Takaki x Akari but in the end distance and time changed the way both lived their lives. Takaki lived a depressed life and I guess he he viewed the girl in episode 2 as a friend who can console him or support him rather than a relationship. Akari on the other hand probably lived a life where she forgot about Takaki as the years passed. This is why she has a ring on during the train scene in episode 3. Finally, they meet up after a couple years later, but the train showed that distance can be very negative in a relationship, thus Takaki wasn't able to go after Akari because he knew things were going to be very different than expected because of his sudden decrease in messages toward Akari.

score: 5/5

Wait? Is that

Yes, it is Kanae.

Ideally, in the perfect world of fiction, Tohno x Akari would happen.

But it didn't. It's a bittersweet story that reflects reality and the harshness of it.

And that's exactly why Kanae x Tohno is ideal.

In the epilogue chapter of the manga, it goes into detail of how Kanae's spent the last 10 years. In highlight, she ends up in the same position (aka, depression, confusion, lost sense of purpose, etc.) Tohno was before he (and Akari) found resolution at the end.

The movie did a brilliant job with subtle messages. It's all about the underlying message. And the last page in the manga is no different. You can say I'm pulling strings, but I honestly believe the author meant by the last page that the only one who can 'guide' Kanae out is Tohno and it was meant to be.

it was bittersweet. he finally decides he can move on with his life, hence the smile, because his an akaris wishes were both fulfilled, tohno finally got to see her again and she finally got to see him again under the cherry blossoms. thats the basic gist of it, you can go into great detail.

So for me..the animation and feel of the whole thing was so amazing that I gave it a 9 and wanted to give it a 10, but it just didn't go where I was....it just didn't go, far as I could tell. The ending left me staring and wondering what the hell happened. Not like I didn't see what happened, I just couldn't believe it was ending where it did.

It was like the entire thing was a desperate struggle to be together, only to end with, "WELP, that's not happening. Bit of a waste. Oh well, no big deal, moving right along now". Really very melancholy. I kind of like that feeling though, which contributes to the 9, even as it holds it back from a 10. It certainly helps that I get over depressing things like this in the blink of an eye (unless extremely horrible deaths are involved, anyway).

I want more anime like this. Not the "bad end' kind of anime mind you. Just the ones with this amazing atmospheric art style with amazing sound effects to go with it. This whole thing was extremely immersive, despite the near constant interruptions from Skype...

Am I missing something here for Act III? This doesn't even seem like an episode, but more of an epilogue. Which half of it is composed of drawn out flash backs of the previous two episodes spliced with a montage of their separate lives apart from each other. It would have gave off a better impact if it wasn't a montage of their lives apart, but was actually written into Act III.

Act III made me lose all empathy towards these two.

Thanks for the links. Though I'd already seen The Place Promised in Our Early Days (and I'm very tempted to rewatch it), I hadn't seen the other 2. I went ahead and watched Voices of a Distant Star since it was so short. I see that it's basically the same theme, except to a much greater extreme. I did enjoy it.

I'll have to get to that third one some time after finals. Thanks again for the recs.

As to the manga...well, never have read a manga, nor VN. I tried like once with Rosario Vampire, but I don't think manga is really my style. I did find some information I liked by reading through some threads around here though. I like the idea of him ending up with the surfer girl much more anyway =).

I was a little bit lost sometimes, with the characters and the three stories... But every thing is good, now.
Hum, it's a sad story. The loneliness of the characters is felt all the film, by the music, the beautiful landscapes filled of melancholia, and by the peaceful and calm rhythm of the film. The difficulty of expressing feelings spring enormously, while both characters (Takaki and Akari) have a special and invisible link, even if the years pass. It's the same things for Kanae, desperately in love to Takaki. She can't talk about her feelings, even if they are very stronger.
The destiny himself seems be opposed to the three characters (the trains/the distance, separate Takaki and Akari, Takaki's letter flies away with the wind, Akari finished bride with another men), and makes it all the more touching the story...
I'm not very fan of love stories generally, but I enjoyed the film.
8/10 !

In my opinion it had to end that way. I really hoped it wouldn't go into the generic plot where the guy finally confesses and says "Please come back to me!". And it didn't. Well done.

What makes this movie so perfect is its realistic feature. It's truly beautiful. A tragedy makes for a better love story than a fairy tale, because life itself is a tragedy. I think we could all relate to this text, and therefore that's what made it amazing.

This wasn't really my thing. Still, it was amazing to just watch the scenery and I felt for the characters a little bit. 8/10 for me.

I can't even remember everything, just found it on my PC, watched it 3 years and 12days ago. But I can remember that it was a really good experience. I know that I liked it, and I remember some parts of it, but I might have to rewatch it, so that I can give a score.

Damn that was a real bittersweet ending. While I'm glad that at the end Takaki was able to move on but I still feel for Kanae.

This may be the most beautiful anime i've ever seen. I have no idea where Kanae's island is (or if it's even real) but i wanna live there!!

I was pretty much tearing up from the first scene all the way through the end, and i dont really know why. Is it because i knew it was gonna be a tragic love story?
Literal star-crossed lovers... That's what all the stars and space imagery was representing i bet, on top of just being jaw droppingly beautiful. I wish the real sky looked like that!

I didn't really care for the vagueness of the last chapter. I love that they dont spell things out for you, but the version i saw didn't translate the texts and letters so i had no idea who the girl with the glasses was, for example. I had to look that up.

So anyway, his girl is getting married to some douche. Obviously he's saddened by that since he moved to Tokyo for her! I feel his pain. I've been in long distance relationships too... (Kids - they never work out.)
Wait, did he know she was engaged? Or was he just sad that he couldn't find her? Could be either one i suppose.

Anyway, I wish it was 30 minutes longer. If it wasn't so short it would've been an instant masterpiece! But it ended a bit too abruptly, so 9 from me... Definitely in the 9-10 area.

I will definitely be checking out Shinkai Makoto's other films. This one made me an instant fan! If they're half as beautiful as this, then we're in for a treat. :3

the island was completely real, it was tanegashima. its even got the space port in real life too. shinkai did a good job of putting real world areas in the movie (see here)

and takaki didnt move to tokyo for akari. takaki got a job as a programmer (which he eventually quits, looking into freelance work near the end) and akari ends up moving back to tokyo after him because her fiancee lives in the same area (coincidentally) they only met each other again by sheer chance.

he was sad because he still couldnt move on from his life. the movie doesnt show it (the manga does) but kanae ended up confessing to him at the airport before he left and only after that did he realize what he did. and he also had just broken up with his girlfriend of 3 years in tokyo (this part is also covered in the manga) because he attempted to take her to the town he and akari stayed at, but he couldnt and ended up leaving her there.

and yes, shinkais other movies are also equally as fantastic.
id reccommed you start from the beginning

Voices of a distant star(the same theme of 5cm per second on a much MUCH larger scale. it was also his first proper movie he did essentially everything by himself, even had himself and his wife do the voice acting)
The place promised in our early days (a scifi about a brewing war between the north and south islands of japan, with a mysterious tower standing in between, has great visuals and an amazing score)
children who chase lost voices from deep belowvery reminiscent of a ghibli film, quite a good fantasy film

and his new work 'kotonoha no niwa (garden of words)' comes out next month on bluray.

have fun

So is the manga canon with the movie? That's a bit lame you have to read the book in order to get the whole picture. Adaptations should stand on their own if you ask me!

And i did not know Tanegashima was a real island. I want to go to there :D

5cm isnt an adaptation, the movie came first.
and its not essential reading to enjoy the movie. its designed in a way to make your own personal conclusions, especially if you rewatch the ending montage carefully.

the manga does go into quite a bit of depth though

5 centimeters, easily my favorite anime. I've read the manga after watching the movie. It was really a great watch and read. Somehow I'm so glad that I came across this. Really taught me a good lesson, to move on.

Movie was great. The art was extravagant. I would have been happier if he did end up with her. I feel that he still pines for her even though the ending implies that he has finally moved on.
