Magical Girl designs that barely change the appearance of the MC other than the clothes yet somehow no one realises who they are and incest/shota relationships from reasons I don’t think I need to explain.
@StarBloom_64 The outfits, they. they have fairy glamour. They can't see the girl behind the magical because the magical is the the girl the outfit and . it's pretty stupid, yeah i'm being totally unserious about this you guys, if someone on this website ever tries to recommend me a pedophile manga I am sending a bomb to whatever physical address i can find for them

@Saputrai violence from girls towards male characters being played for laughs or just generally being treated as acceptable behavior is definitely one of my least favorite tropes i don't think i've ever dropped a series for it, but I've probably felt the urge to do so in the moment. It's absolutely shaped my opinion of a character and a series. Kugisaki Nobara hitting Yuuji in Jujutsu Kaisen is the most recent example i can think of. I love Nobara overall as a character, but Yuuji is a good boy. If you hit him again we aren't friends anymore. I don't care if you're upset or you were worried about him. Why are you hitting him? Who taught you to do that?

Idk. For me it's usually in romcoms where you have the MC and FMC in a sweet and endearing relationship, and then all of a sudden a new girl comes and it becomes a love triangle or more. This is usually acceptable if it starts out clearly as like an Harem anime, but it's just jarring if it doesn't
@Magpareddi That's exactly why I can't watch many romance anime, This bothers me so much that it almost completely turns me off from the genre. There have been very few that I've managed to watch.

I feel like I’ve answered this topic a dozen times, and my answers were almost always different. Either way, I’m currently tired of the tropes that plague romance anime. The love triangle that only exists to generate cheap drama. The “misunderstanding” that could be solved in 15 seconds of basic human communication. The loud, obnoxious childhood friend whose entire personality is screaming. Add in the dense protagonist who couldn’t recognize a confession if it came with subtitles. Then you get the time-wasters: will-they-won’t-they tensions stretched across an entire season. Accidental groping played as comedy. Blushing, stuttering, internal monologues instead of actual conversations. Confessions interrupted by fireworks, trains, festivals, or divine intervention. God forbid two characters just talk like functioning humans. Romance is usually fine when it’s a side genre. When characters have lives, goals, or an actual plot outside of “do they like me.” But when it’s anime focused on it, it often collapses under its own tropes. At this point, I can’t tell whether Japan just can’t write romance for shit, or I’ve been watching the wrong shits, or I’m just completely jaded with the genre. Probably all of them.

@Impala the genre is definitely full of pointless derivative garbage like it's chock full of it. straight suffocating under the weight of it is what it's doing and even the best stuff still tends to use some of the worst tropes - the interrupted confession is practically the wilhelm scream of romance manga. you will never escape it. I'd argue that, whatever the genre, Japan can't seem to let its new writers out from under the rotting asses of their seniors. The subculture is SO obsessed with emulating "the greats". These tropes are ubiquitous because editors tell their writers they need to include them if they want to please readers- and as far as the audience in japan is concerned, they might even be right. My taste is a bit niche these days, but I can tell you there IS good romance manga out there. It might take a little looking... like, on a profile, or something. Like maybe even somebody's profile on MAL. Inshallah you will find them ;) And, like, you can always support western creators if you're getting sick of the tropes in japanese media. There are a lot of really fantastic small creators out there writing romantic dramas that are a whole lot more grounded than anything you're gonna find in an anime. Do some searching on instagram, you'll run in to them in no time.

| The "I'm going to be intentionally vague with everything I fucking say, but I'll still lambast you as immature for not picking up on my cues and not doing exactly what I want you to do" trope is the fucking worst in the medium. It's only bad because the series never frames them as the c***s they are, and they're usually vindicated at some point anyway. Some dishonorable mentions off the top of my head: Ami from 'Toradora' Talho from 'Eureka Seven' That's why I loved Renton for shutting her shit down and running away from the Gekko halfway through the series, kek. Even Eureka didn't blame him, and it was on her behalf that they were shitting on him. Another trope is the anti-love triangle. Usually used by female creators, it's when you want to write a romance story but don't want to write any interesting conflicts or have "losers," so any character that is initially perceived as a potential love rival is immediately relegated to being comedic relief or a fanboy/girl. Girls that can potentially be a wedge between two boys' """friendship""" immediately being revealed to be fujos (and the author's obvious self-insert), "nice guys" being relegated to the feMC's fruity BFF or having a girlfriend already so they don't get between the bland feMC and the rape-y male love interest, etc. There's a reason classical literature has always portrayed love as a brutal struggle used to engage the reader. The comfy shit can be a nice change of pace, but it's always going to be milquetoast and forgettable. Nirinbo said: The typical "smartest person in the world but bored with life" light novel MC always turns me off. You're the best; I completely forgot about this. Not sure how many of those are actual tropes, but anyway...
- "The growling stomach reconciliation"... or something... Is there a conflict? Boom! One party suddenly gets too hungry to continue the agrument.
- "The new MMORPG that has conquered the entire world!" ... But aren't most of Japanese/Korean/Chinese MMORPGs popular mainly in those countries? "The entire word"? Do they have a different version of the globe or something?
- Musician = constant drama and quarrels with your bandmates. Nah, musician = death in poverty. Sorry...
- Hot springs. Not a bad thing, but it's something inherently Japanese. Beaches are usually fine, though.
- The "prince guy" character archetype. They have zero respect for women's personal space.

@LSSJ_Chloe those scenes are gross in so many ways it doesn't matter if it's "accidental", it doesn't matter if it's circumstantial, like, honestly, it doesn't even matter if you've written this girl as being "into it" it's just gross to look at and unpleasant to experience on the screen, it's not entertaining or titillating or even really that shocking anymore and it reinforces really problematic ideas about bodily autonomy for the socially stunted weirdos that consume this trash in real life I think if any trope made me drop anime it's this one, i sat through what essentially felt like torture in an anime club in high school for 1 year and swore off the whole medium to this day if someone tries to recommend me something the first thing i ask is "is it an isekai" and the second thing i ask is "is it gross" and 9 times out of 10 i can gather enough from their defensive babbling to save myself from having to sit through those first 3 episodes

No. Beach episodes are true fanservice.
Hot spring episodes are only japan being obsessed with themselves as usual. Half of those episodes don't even include girls in them.
Japan is so narcissistic they basically cum themselves over everything about their culture and they think hot springs stand at the very top of it, so every anime ever made has to have a stupid hot spring episode.
Muh onsen isn't just a trope (the biggest trope), it's a goddamn religion with them.

Hard to pick just one, but recently its been the status screens in isekai/fantasy anime. It was excusable in something like Log Horizon where the characters got stuck inside an RPG that they were all playing. But now, series that have nothing to do with simulations, video games or RPGs are just lazily throwing in status screens and named character abilities. Makes the show feel so cheap and not immersive. Instead of creating a fantasy world, authors are just taking the most recent video game they played and using those game systems to write their story. Medieval/historical fantasy is probably my favorite setting, but with anime it feels like a poisoned chalice - poisoned with low effort slop.

| @ComeInReiAsuka Because people who can't cook still exist in real life, now more than ever before. So everyone can relate to it. It's getting full episodes in 2020s because not everyone watches hundreds of anime from every decade. Most anime viewers are casuals. @DaiichiDaiman i think it can offer a decent framework for a story, helping readers understand the setting without having to really get into it - but it's still lazy, and you really have to be bringing something else to the table. I've seen it work, but it's never really felt like an asset.
It worked great in Goblin Slayer, but goblin slayer really subverted the genre's tone. It's OKAY in frieren, but it feels like a pretty flimsy afterthought there. I think what makes the trope feel so noxious is just how ubiquitous it is in every utterly pointless throwaway video game shonen anime.

@anen0me Goblin Slayer is one of the shows that I make an exception for because the meta plot has gods literally playing D&D. Same with Overlord (which is ironically more creative with its races and characters than most isekai) because it's an MMO, it makes sense for it to be inspired by generic fantasy. Everything else is just lazy.
