@Rally-

It makes sense, you love people who love you so indirectly you are loving yourself... I don't know if that made sense.
@Absurdo_N Nah. I don't love myself lol. But I do love those people!

Can you live with yourself?
> No choice.

Do you like yourself?
> Sometimes.

Do you respect yourself?
> I don't think so.

Do you take care of your mental and physical health?
> I try, but apparently not well enough.

Do you love yourself?
> I am called to love all people, so I do try.

Are you really trying to change for the better?
> I thought so...

Ask me again when I'm manic.

@Absurdo_N More like why would that even be an emotion to feel towards myself?
Like okay, I have parents, and I can understand loving your wife even if I'm forever alone, but how would myself? It makes no sense.
@JaniSIr It doesn't make sense if you look at it in an emotional-relationship perspective.

To put it simply:

Person without self-love:
"Im never enough"
"I will never amount to anything"
"I'm a failure"
"Nobody loves me"
“I’ll never get better.”
“I’m so stupid for making mistakes.”
“No one would want to be around me.”

Person with self-love:
"I accept my flaws"
"I'm not perfect but I'm willing to improve"
“I’m not a failure; this is just part of the process.”
“Even if everyone is against me, I still have myself.”
“Not everyone will like me, and that’s okay.”
“I trust myself to figure things out.”

It means that you always have your back no matter what, and that you will never reject who you are.

Funny how people mistake self-love for narcissism when narcissism is the exact opposite of self-love.

People confuse a lot of things I think.

Now here's where "Narcissism" comes into the picture.

A narcissist is a person without self-love, but they try to put up a facade to make it seem like they do. They can never seem to accept and be content with themselves so they try to boast about it everytime they can.

Just like how a coward tries to look confident, a narcissist tries to look self-loving.

@-Shinzo I would not ever say any of those.

@JaniSIr

Not everyone uses those exact words.

Those are just examples of the kinds of thoughts people might have. The core difference is whether your inner self tears you down or supports you.

This is also what people mean when they say “love yourself before you can love others.” If you know how to support and care for yourself, it means you’re not depending on others to fill the gaps you don’t give yourself.

@-Shinzo So a follow up question to that is what is the inner self?
It's kind of weird you describe concepts that you seem to think are self evident..

I am tempted to say I hate myself but in actuality I hate when other people do not understand, accept and love me for me enough and how the world doesn't fit with me enough so I just direct the frustration at myself. I would not say I love myself though because I'd rather question myself so I do not become too bad a person. I do have things I like about myself and things I don't.

When people "love themselves" it is because others loved them in crucial times in their past or present and vice versa either directly or indirectly. Other people are usually a major factor because without external input someone can easily become delusional in which you really can't call delusion truly love or hate.

i'm neutral about how i feel about myself, though i can have days where i lean more one way or the other.

If I touch a burning candle, I can feel no pain.
If you cut me with a knife, it's still the same.
And I know her heart is beating, and I know that I am dead;
yet the pain here that I feel, try and tell me it's not real,
and it seems that I still have a tear to shed

Fair point- I explained it like it was something everyone automatically understands, but it’s not.

The way I see it, everyone has an inner-self when things happen. Some people have it as a "voice" and some just "react" on it.

For example:
Someone criticizes your height, face, or weight.
You confess to someone and get rejected.
Your sibling gets praised while you don’t.
A friend forgets or takes too long to reply.
A close friend/family compares you to someone.

In these moments, do you think badly about yourself and react negatively, or do you brush it off, and keep a positive mindset?
That’s the difference I mean when I talk about self-love and your inner self.

@-Shinzo Most of these would even trigger introspection, in fact the first scenario would end up in a nasty retort.

"I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."
I love him who is ashamed when the dice fall in his favour and who then asks: Am I then a cheat? – for he wants to perish.
