After finishing the series, the truth is it's very superficial and not very captivating. The music and animation for the fight scenes are very good, but it's the type of series that tries to cover a lot of themes and ultimately ends up spreading itself too thin, leaving the world-building incomplete. There are many sub-plots that, if removed, wouldn't change the "central" part of the work at all.

Many defend it because it follows the current Netflix-style script: they talk to you and explain things as if you were a child, but then make you feel like a detective for discovering something. Because of this, many consider themselves intellectuals when talking about this series, just because Watanabe is directing. However, a series or an audiovisual product isn't solely the work of a director; there are also screenwriters and investors. And that's where I think the failure lies. The investors are Warner Bros., and they've tried to produce multiple anime, all one failure after another, and this is no different.

I have given it a 6 purely for the soundtrack and animation. The plot is absolutely dogshit... Just I'm too lenient when there's good music involved.

I did the same with DitF cause that had a shit plot but good music too. Sometimes I think I'm too soft with subtracting points because of plot.

HOLY FUARKING CINEMARINO I CANNOT BELIEVE IT PEAK PEAK PEAK PEAK PEAK PEAK BRAVO CRISTOPHER NOLAN ABSOLUTE CINEMA MISTER SHINICHIRO GOATANABE PEAK PEAK PEAK PEAK PEAK THE BEST PEAK THAT WAS EVER PEAKED INTO THE VALLEY OF PEAK BY WAYS OF PEAK DID I FORGOT TO TELL YOU IT WAS PEAK, REALLY I DONT SEE HOW ANYONE CAN DISLIKE THIS BECAUSE I HAVE THE IQ OF A BONOBO APE AND NEVER EVER PLUGGED 2 OF MY SYNAPSES WHEN I CONSUMED MEDIA ONCE IN MY LIFE.

I am in awe with such level of asspulls, this makes shitgetsu no Yaiba feel reasonable in comparison and kimetsu breaks its own worldbuilding rules during every single fight.
I need to make a sidestep about this episode in particular before I put my thoughts in order because I just can't get over this, It's genuinely baffling how much the story isn't acknowledging about incompetent the main cast is at their job, despite coming up sucessfully (somehow, thanks plot armor), they all have taken the worst possible decisions they could have and just acted like dumbass for the entirety of the show.
I mean they have visited the homeless camp back in episode3, even Doug realized he saw Skinner afterwards, it simply means they didn't do their mission properly, which btw was saving the entire human race, still they can't be fucking bothered to actually dig up the place as a whole and if they did, they would have resolved the plot in less than a week. It would work if we were let in shadow as well but IT WASN'T THE CASE, WE SAW SKINNER IN EPISODE 3, this is called dramatic irony, when the audience knows something the character in the story ignores, and it is usually used as a comedy tool, Moliere was a big fan of it in many of his works. I don't have to explain why the audience knowing the answer of mystery the characters are unaware of is just frustrating and simply bad writing.
There are so many occasions in the story where the characters just magically survive impossible scenarios and only plot armor can justify them remaining alive. Axel is getting shot in any action scenes, he got stabbed in the middle of his abdomen last episode and yet he can surive a falling building by just defying gravity itself and doing parkour around the falling rumble, surviving unscathed yet the assassin dude just die like a bitch. What the hell Doug would have done if he didn't got saved at the last second by the hacker girls? What if Axel didn't come last second to save Chris before the other guy tried to shoot her? What if Eleina and Leeland couldn't convinced the red hair girl to save them when they were about to be executed by the cult? The Lazarus team never has any backup plan if things go south and never proceed to actually make plans that could avoid them getting killed. All of them are saved by pure Deus Ex Machinas, bullets never hitting their targets, and other characters magically appearing to their rescue.

In the end what is the point of this anime? What is the legacy of Lazarus?
One thing that is undeniable about the career of Watanabe is that even if you don't like all of his anime or find some of them terrible, most of his works had a huge influence on the overall worldwide anime audience.
Lazarus doesn't make any effort to leave any mark on anyone or anything. It's self-referential to the point of plagiarization, it is uninspired as the most bland hollywood action movies of the 2010s, it looks like everything and nothing at the same time and its themes are so outdated and unremarkable in the modern zeitgeist it might be forgotten in 2 weeks if it wasn't already forgotten by anyone who watched it.

Whole show was like if someone read the synopsis of Cowboy Bebop without watching it and made all the characters soulless recreations of the main cast. The worst part is, the dude who did it literally directed Bebop. What a clusterfuck.

I assume it must have been bad script writers. of course a lot of it is Watanabe's fault for not addressing things during production...

Literally the only funny thing in this series is that Skinner actually already in eps 3 (Axel literally got him in the first try) but we got 10+ more eps of finding him lmao
So far this is a boring series, anticlimatic final as well, maybe because my expectation is too high
well at least the ending is satisfying, none of them died and they got together again as team

@Ryuseishun i thought it was just ok, calling it trash(and using a sonic meme, ew) is a bit much. Something i need to ask though, are you really trying to pretend you’ve actually watched all that anime and read all that manga? On top of that disliking it so much your mean score is under 2 😅. To put in perspective for your list to not be absolute bs you’d have to of spent 10 years straight(24hrs of every day)of your life watching anime and reading manga.
@Fintan

Has literally nothing to do with my own personal ratings and listings when the general consent about the series here has been more or less similar to mine.

...And they all lived happily ever after! :D

This show sucked so much ass, it's unbelievable how it just kept getting worse, episode after episode. It has so many flaws and issues, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Such a shame, it's a good concept. I really liked the first episode and I was so hyped. Little did I know, it would have been all downhill from there...

Also, the assassin's subplot was so out of place. Really, what was the point? I think it was there just to serve as a "final boss" and provide more action scenes. Outside of that, it's completely irrelevant to the anime. Maybe they were trying to say something about... Governmental secret projects involving people? Really hard to tell, with how awful the social "commentary" is in this anime. And couldn't he just google the myth?

And Skinner's motivation, the resolution, the dialogue, everything... It's all so lame, amateurish, just bad.

The action scenes were the only real reason I kept watching, but even those fell off too somewhere around the middle, although this last one was really good. Only real saving grace is the music.

Lazarus is... somewhat entertaining? But still awful.

Except that they were forced with a death threat to find him lol

@0451
I don't think 13 more episodes would have saved this series either. 24+ episodes could have worked only if they spent more than a single episode investigating a location. That way, it could have had the time to actually explore the characters and flesh them out, and also more time to competently explore the themes it wanted to portray. But maybe a good writer could have pulled it off in just 13? I wouldn't know.

But what Lazarus really needs is a screenplay that is not written by what seem to be complete amateurs, considering that they found the pill that almost directly led them to Skinner in the second fucking episode, Chris just so happened to forget about it. Scratch that, they had the MAN HIMSELF right in front of them back in episode 3, they just didn't happen to recognize him because... He was wearing a beanie and sunglasses? Bruh

Or they could have also just focused solely on the action and the manhunt and make it a movie. In short, it's not the length the issue, but the direction.

I know this is a really disorganized post, it reads more like some sort of stream of consciousness, but I couldn't care less. Fuck this show.

At this point I don't think making the show longer would've made it good. Most of the episodes were already boring enough. It probably would've been more boring if they spent more time on the locations. The only location that might've benefitted from extra screentime would probably be the one in the cult episode. That episode felt too fast-paced and rushed.

Anyway, Lazarus was a pretty boring show. I think it should've been shorter. It should've been just a movie. Not that it matters now. I think this show will be forgotten as soon as the next season properly starts. Imagine if it did come out in Summer 2025. It would've gotten buried very fast. It’s lucky to be in such a slow season lol.

Still staying with 8/10. Barely. It was entertaining while it lasted. And I liked the chars and how they wrapped up things in the end. (Even that one guy coming out of the bunker lol.) 7.5 rounded up would have been a 7.49 if they had not shown that other hacker (getting hit by a pillow from Eleina). This would be great as a starter for more "normal" stuff - that the team could do.

The plot with the char episodes was okay - but as expected: Too rushed at the end and too many things felt odd/forced. The HQ identity could have just been something invented by the killer cause he wanted more control (not a 2nd person that would be a risk factor) - not them having to use something like the identity disorder lol.

The thing with everyone being present at the airport - then suddenly having the genes mutate ... also weird. Would have been better to have a sub plot around Axel (a cure hidden there) + the others really still showing symptoms near the end. A lot of stuff pretty convenient. Felt like the female president was Abel's ex wife lol - so easy to get to meet her when needed.

But yeah ... it was entertaining. Maybe doing stuff without such US guys (this "de Marco" guy) and using 2 seasons. The rushed endings and/or weird plots are a Japanese thing though. And at least a lot of stuff had foreshadowing - no too weird overall twists. Just unnecessary stuff in the smaller details + not enough time while doing "character episodes" and the overall plot.

High Card as comparison comes to mind - a pretty recent anime. Split or 2-cour I think. A lof teased at the end of part (season) 1. I liked the chars a bit less. Guys here looked cooler. But the overall plot felt better cause it had more time while still doing character episodes.

I liked the anime, sort of.
The main plot really kept me watching, although the execution of it was very, very bad.
I only stayed for the ending but it still didn't quite deliver. And the fact Skinner died just for the emotional effect, which doesn't makes much sense since the USA president, a early hapna user, also survived.
But anyways...
Giving it a 6/10 for the fights
But everything else about this series doesn't makes sense (watch steins gate instead)

i hate this show, i came in with low expectations given that the only work from watanabe that i liked was cowboy bebop which aired like 25 years ago. And his most recent work being Carole and Tuesday sucked ass in its second half, i was expecting something similar to that, so I really didn't had expectations other than the fights probably being really good (which for the most part where).

But somehow it managed to disappoint me. It felt like an immitation of Cowboy Bebop but with a worse execution and still an episodic format despite the plot not really being one that fits that episodic style. The problem and conflict it presents is genuinely good, but in the time it has, it somehow doesn't flesh out the characters and yet feels like it drags on for so long its painful. It doesn't help that the last fight was indeed not more impressive than the previous one.

I genuinely think the elements of a great story are there, i'm a sucker for this kind of plots, one of my favorite animes or should i say ova series is Blue Submarine No.6 which also presents a world thretening conflict, but it starts from the outcome of said conflict that started thanks to a scientist who gave up on the world.

Also what is this shit of everyone being at the same airport and surviving the Hapna gas and that being why they all got called to be a team?, it feels like a "gotchu" type reveal that is just stupid, why didnt' they fucking idk, get those guys blood samples and try to see why they where not affected?

Why didn't the blondie show the team the damn pill she found around episode 2 or 3, the show is frustratingly annoying with conveniences in favor of wasting time, i'm usually someone who isn't too against convenient stuff being there for the plot to progress, I think its a resource to progress a plot that works if the plot being written is interesting or at least entertaining, but here its done in order to make the plot NOT advance, which is crazy.

Lazarus tries so bad to be a "holywood chase the big bad guy who kinda has a point" type movie but it takes double the time to get there unlike the usual holywood movie.

I can't dishonestly give it a bad grade because i think the show does have stunning animation (for the exception of the terrible elevator fight that had good choreography but terrible animation), the music is good, some episodes have IMMACULATE vibes, but i think just like the generic decent holywood flicks it can be enjoyed, so my grade is in line with the grade i give those movies.

6/10

Yeah, so aside from Watanabe's trayectory, the soundtrack by a few bands I was recommended in previous forums and a couple of parkour fights, I can't name a single other thing I liked about this show. The story itself is quite basic when you think about it and goes on an episodic cat and mouse game for 8 episodes before finally deciding it had to end somehow. The characters are all bland or just blurt out some stupid lines that are either cringey or maybe sound way cooler in their head than in execution. The animation ranges from good in the action scenes to terrible in everything else with a toned down color palette. And the final conclusion was certainly underwhelming to say the least.

I don't hate this show as I hate other shows, but this is nowhere near at the level I was expecting of it.

The final plot twist is inspired by the Lazarus myth: all Lazarus members turned out to be survivors of the airport incident when the virus sample was leaked. Abel Anderson makes it in time to arrest rogue incom agents, which doesn't stop some of them from using an attack helicopter. Injured Axel confronts Chinese Wick for a final fight on top of Babylon Tower. The fight goes poorly for Axel until Inscom's copter disrupts their duel. The assassin takes it down with an RPG, but the burning copter is damaged entirely. The structure crumbles, forcing "duelists" to parkour their way to the bottom. The assassin fails to land safely, yet remembers his humanity in his final moment. How Axel performed an impossible stunt with a spear injury in his stomach remains a mystery to me.
As shown in episode 3, Skinner was hiding in a homeless camp all this time. Doug was distracted by his bum disguise and didn't recognize him, I suppose. Doc realized "world sucks, yet worth to fight for", then draws antidote formula before he dies. Axel and Doug call out Lindemann for government plans to wipe out Lazarus after the job is over, but Abel Anderson arrives at the right time to inform the heroes they are clear of all charges. Realizing they have nowhere else to go, the team collectively hints at new adventures before the credits roll.
Good show overall. The high quality of animation and soundtrack exceeds the story, which is a common case with Watanabe's shows. Somewhat tedious to watch 1 episode per week, so a quick binge is a preferable option. Not excited for a sequel, but the world of Lazarus has established enough ground for future development.

This show was just the most content-ass content. Usually I drop shows I don't like after three episodes but I think I got to episode five with this one before I stopped caring at all and for some reason decided to ride it out. I have no idea why I bothered. I couldn't even go on a rant about why I hated the show or even dissect where it went wrong because I don't even remember 95% of it. Fake Spike is called Axel; they went to a club in one episode to capture a DJ that does crypto or something; very annoying Pakistani hacker lives in a truck; Rusty Venture showed up in the last two or three episodes to arrest the military. That's literally all I have in my head about this show. What a complete waste of time.

Am I the only one who thinks Watanabe should’ve gone with a more bittersweet ending? Like, the team finds Skinner, but he doesn’t have the cure rather than the happier ending we got. I just feel that would’ve fit the story so much better. It feels like Watanabe played it too safe with this project. While I really enjoyed the anime, it lacked the bold creativity he’s known for in his previous work. The ending felt like producers were pressuring him to go with something safer just to please fans, which honestly had the opposite effect on me. The whole reason Skinner wanted to wipe out humanity with Hapuna was because he knew how messed up the world had become. The fact that they willingly gave up the cure (ik he said in the video in ep 1), even after finding him, solved absolutely nothing. His goal was to test humanity to change to evolve (sry can’t find the right word), but it ended up being a test of whether humanity deserved to be saved at all. I get that wasn’t his only reason (since he revealed the nuclear bioweapon plot), but that felt like a scapegoat. Honestly, I would’ve preferred a more philosophical ending instead of mid ending. I may be In minority, so feel free to roast my opinions.

Overall: 7.9/10
Story 7.0/10
Pacing 7.1/10
Score 9.8/10
Action sequences 9.5/10
Characters 7.6/10 (enjoyable, I but wish the dialogue between the characters was better)
Animation 9/10 (I mean animated by mappa off course it look peak)
Voice acting Eng dub 8.5/10
Voice acting Sub 8.5/10 (ngl Hersch sub Va didn’t fit her)

If the ending was better I would’ve gave 8.5/10.

A little better of an ending than I thought.

I was holding out criticism until the final episode and here it is

Aside from poor characterization where the characters feel flat there is way too much nonsense in how characters act. Skinner didn't publicly announce that incident that took place as a proper whistle blower, he had the entire world drugged and had ability to blackmail everyone in exchange for the cure and he did some stupid game leaving everything up to chance and the guy is supposed to be a genius. He's supposed to be empathetic but he risked committing mass genocide on innocent people instead of targeting government officials or even just celebrities. It makes no sense. Also his cure was just a molecule somehow drawn out cleanly while he can't see shit, not explaining how to synthesize it unless he had a more active involvement beyond that scene, but we are expected to believe it could be and would be mass produced and distributed to everyone in under 24 hours? No, it would go to the rich people and political figures and their family first as the top priority and a small number of lucky random people while everyone else dies, though sure maybe could just assume for some reason their production is superbly futuristic and fast but you need chemicals to synthesize drugs, you need labs and special lab conditions and it would tae time to acquire if there even is enough chemicals on the planet to synthesize medicine for billions of people at once.

And the climate message before was also so terribly done placing blame on all humanity equally instead of more the people with the power to change it, the governments and the big companies. It didn't even properly convey any message there just preach to people who already agree with it to get brownie points.

This actually could have been great but too much execution was done in such a dull way and everything dragged out in what could have worked better as a feature length film. Only thing particularly good was the animation and choreography in some action scenes.
