And with this, Blue Box comes to an end.
Honestly, can't believe I won't be getting my weekly Blue Box dose now. After losing my Orb weekly dose, Blue Box was the last anime that had to be completed from the ones I was watching in the Fall 2024 Season.
This last episode was very bittersweet.
It was bitter, because we could see very well how Taiki's rejection of Hina's confession affected Hina. We see many times in the episode Hina depressed or crying, which just feels real for the situation. And this is one of the reasons I love Blue Box so much, it just feels really genuine, and the fact they aren't glossing over Hina's suffering just makes last episode even more hurtful, and makes this situation feel real.
It was also sweet, because we see that Taiki took this change to finally do something about his situation with Chinatsu, that was becoming stagnant, and invited her to a unusual date, in a tracksuit shopping spree. Without Taiki realizing it, Chinatsu was able to double down the date invitation, by adding the Café visit, which is a much more normal date place. By the end of the episode, we get a glimpse of the beginning of this date, which was honestly just wholesome.
However, I really liked how they showed that it's not easy for Taiki to just continue his life after what he did to Hina. It's clear he wants to talk to her, but he knows he's the last person she should be getting support from, since it would only hurt her more. It also seems he took this step with Chinatsu, exactly because he didn't want Hina's suffering to be in vain, as we can see many times Taiki remembering Hina's confession while thinking about Chinatsu, which at the same time also wokrs as a contrast to the situation now, where he's the one that might get rejected, this time by Chinatsu, and Taiki knows about that possibility.
I also enjoyed to see Ayame rethinking what she did with Hina and Taiki, and reflecting about her past relationships. It was really cute to see Hina protecting Ayame from the comments of that ex, eventhough it was also because what he was saying was also a way to attack Taiki, which one again shows how much Hina loves Taiki. It's clear Kyou's words ressonated with her. Even if she took a lot of boyfriends, she doesn't know what is true love, and if she ever caused any pain to her ex's like Taiki caused Hina. But the anime really seems to be making Ayame and Kyou closer now. Maybe we're getting a new romantic pair. I'm more interested in this possible pair than the Kyou and Hina one. With this, Kyou is also getting more screentime, but at the same time it's a shame he needed a "romantic" possible interest to get more screentime, as I think he's a really interesting character on his own.
Another thing this episode brought back was the Taiki and Haryu relationship, that I think was kind of forgotten after the 1st cour. I'm glad they're bringing it back, since I always wanted to see Haryu taking a bigger role in Taiki's development.
Overall, an amazing episode to give us some closure, and also making us want more, because I really want to know how that date went!
I have to say this episode made me realize how little discussions we had between Taiki and Kyou in this 2nd cour. Besides the coffee and milk one, we barely saw them interacting with each other, we just see they're together, but not much more, and that's something I would like to see more explored in the future, alongside Taiki and Haryu's relationship.
This episode also showed why I love this anime so much, it targets the topic of love in such a realistic way. The way we see Taiki's dillema with wanting to confort Hina, but knowing that's not the correct thing is something you don't see much in anime, as also you wouldn't see Hina being depressed throughout the episode, many would just make her forget about everything in the next episode. The way Kyou said that both looked happier when they were just friends just showcases that what Taiki said about their current status being toxic was really the truth.
Honestly, this anime just feels genuine and wholesome, and that's what hooks me into watching. The characters act like real people, with their own personalities, and this alligned with the fact that the plot evolved in many unpredictable ways, makes this experience much richer in my opinion. This anime depicts love as few do, and that's what makes this anime stand out. There may be some aspects the anime can get better, especially the ones I mentioned before, and how during episode 11-13 things were getting a bit stagnant, but it's for sure a refreshing and eye-pleasing experience.
I have no doubt about the score of this anime, it's a deserved 9/10 for me.
I really hope we get that 2nd season announcement soon, because the Taiki x Chinatsu ship is ready to sail!
Edit: Formatation done. Also, can't forget to mention how well they portrayed Hina's suffering too, with the feeling she has when she has to train in the same gym as Taiki and Chinatsu. The way she describes it as "suffocating" really shows how she's feeling. |
