Usually if it’s that bad I’ll drop it and not rate it, and I’ll try not to watch shows that I know I won’t like

The lowest I could give is 6 and nothing below 5. Unless it's something I really really hate, then why not?

It may be caused by a variety of factors. Indulgent people, “weird” rating systems, necessity to reward with higher scores for the time invested or simply consumption is reduced to works exclusively that they like (doubtful, heh). But well... I think there is a serious misconception.
Looking through some of the responses, I've found that some people have the mentality of “why would I finish something I don't like?”... Huh, I think people take very literally the values attached to the MAL ratings. Creative people -incluiding me- take advantage of the wide availability of numerical values we can give to each show and distribute it intelligently. I mean... you just have to integrate the term “contrast” into your brain. "1/10" and "10/10" are nothing more than extremes of enjoyment. A lot of people on this platform have a taboo with ranking low numbers or a tendency to miscategorize a silly number.

Some other theories:

1. They're considering the anime's average rating, or the typical average ratings throughout the site.

I think the general consensus is an average rating of 7.00 on MAL means "mediocre," 6.00 means "poor," and 5.00 means "trash." So unless they actively hate the anime, they will give it a 6 at least.

2. They don't like being mean.

Not everyone delights in sternly judging an anime. It's anime, it's for fun.

3. They don't want to think they've wasted time watching bad anime.

If they've spent many hours on something they ended up not liking, it makes them feel like a fool who got duped. So they hold back from rating it too harshly.

A sort of sunken-cost fallacy. Or kind of like politics. If the party or the politician they fully trust and support messes up, or turns out to be not what they initially thought, some people double down and refuse to admit they had it wrong.

This is the most likely reason that can be thought of.

Because i dont watch shows that i know i will hate.
The only show i ever watched which ibreally hate from the core is school days. Which i gave a 1. Because it doesnt deserve anything else.
@Wrathberry84 Exactly, lol. I only watch shows I think I'm going to rate an 8 or higher

It might be that I tend to be a bit less overly-critical than some, but I rate mostly on entertainment value and the combined impressions of myself and my teenage daughter, she being my faithful anime-watching buddy as well as my kid. I don't really try to invent "standards" because those are never truly objective (indeed they cannot be) -- if a particular aspect of a series stands out to me, then yes I will mention it in any review I may do of the work. Besides which, our gestalt opinions quite frequently are at odds with what the "average" or "discerning" anime fans might say about a given piece -- mostly because we don't try to "measure" against some set of "standards" that someone else made up and everybody else jsut parroted. Our opinions are our own, andafter nearly 40 years of my own experience, I can honestly say that the main reason I don't often rate below a 5 is because 5 is "average": the equivalent of a C in American educational grading, and very, VERY few anime are so bad as to rate below "average", i.e., worse than the run of the mill that is broadcast every season on Japanese TV. (On the flip side of that coin, we also rarely give out a 10, because to us a 10 is an anime that so affects us that it looks to be a game-changer for the industry in general, as in its content or style is very, very likely to be copied and repeated by other titles from various companies going forward.)
TL/DR: If after slogging through my little mini-rant you're jsut confused, here's the takeaway: very few anime are so far below average that they deserve a rating below 5. Likewise, very few are so far ABOVE the norm that they rate a 10.
As always, jsut my two cents' worth. Take it or leave it, as you wish. Laters :)

Agreed with the part about simply dropping or ignoring an anime that would otherwise get rated below 5 and not wanting to rate unfinished shows. My personal rating system reserves 1 for anime that offends me, and while there's a lot of horrid crap out there that would likely deserve the rating, obviously I'm not going to be actively seeking that stuff out.

Another factor is that people tend to get very defensive about anime, which means many people will be reluctant to give low scores because they worry they might upset others. Even for me, I gave Clear Card a 4 because I thought it was a boring rehash of Cardcaptor Sakura that downplayed its unique premise in favour of generic Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. But then I see how many people rated this highly and wonder, did I do the right thing?

Honestly, if something really pissed me off then i'm definitely not reluctant to dish out the 4 or 3 that they deserve! >:)

It just doesn't happen that often for me since i find most anime i watch to have at least some redeeming qualities or i just drop something if i can't get into it or if i find it contains things i'd rather not watch.

Because people can't use rating scales. If someone complains about a series and thinks it's shit and then gives it 6 or 7, I have a mindfuck. It's as if they were afraid that they would get punished for low ratings lol I'm not saying to give every series a 1 or two, but if you think something is bad, give it the rating you think it deserves. Ratings of 5 and above are average to positive ratings.

I think its normal though cause there are hundreds of seasonal shows every year that most people dont watch which are probably the "average". Most people only watch the couple of good shows out there even though there have been 10's of thousands that have been aired so realistically they are probably right in rating what theyve watched as higher than 5. Most anime are trash

If it's bad I probably just won't finish it. I don't rate things I don't finish. And I don't wanna use my precious time to finish bad shows.

Now this happens not only with anime but other mediums too, I don't get it.
