Speed Racer/Mach GoGoGo (1967) on cartoon network in the 90s. I think it was my first anime as well.

1959, Shounen Sarutobi Sasuke

But that one sucked.

Also,..

1967, Ribbon no Kishi
1967, Bouken Gaboten Shima
1968, Gegege no Kitarou
1968, Youkai Ningen Bem
1969, Ninpuu Kamui

and 38 other anime along those lines, including Ashita no Joe, Cutey Honey, Uchuu Kaizoku Captain Harlock, Versailles no Bara and Gundam.
They all sucked.

The oldest anime I watched that did not suck was:

Daicon Opening Animations (1981)

You can watch it here:

There are quite a few classics which are really nice.

For example,
Gundam series in the 60s, 70s, 80s;
Candy Candy in the 70s;
Doraemon started in the 60s/70s and is still ongoing;
Cardcaptor Sakura in the 90s;
Ashita no Nadja in 2003;
Shugo Chara in 2007;
and many more..

I have been taking time to watch some of the old classic series and enjoying them.

Lemme just crash the thread by forcing everybody to watch an anime from 1907.

Did you catch that? That's the whole thing, all three seconds of it. You can now add Katsudou Shashin to your completed list.

Seriously though, Ashita no Joe is so fucking good. My oldest unironic watch was the 1958 movie Hakujaden, though the oldest enjoyable anime I've watched was the 1968 Gegege no Kitaro.

Welp, the thread is kind of pointless now cause you just changed everyone's answer!

If movies count, then Nausicaa of Wind Valley (1982). If not, then Dragon Ball (1986).
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

I've seen the below shorts

Katsudou Shashin (1907) - Saw this in 2023
Namakura Gatana (1917)

The oldest full length show I've seen is Dororo to Hyakkimaru (1969). It was really good. But the title of the oldest proper show I will have seen will probably change as I got a few older shows on my watch list.

Between the oldest two shows pre-1920 and Dororo, I've seen a bunch of short and experimental films.

The one and only, the living legend, the oldest anime ever produced (at least the oldest known) that had its premiere during the Meiji era: Katsudou Shashin.

Oldest is Katsudou Shashin from 1908. The second oldest one I've watched is Namakura Gatana. I've tried to find and watch every single anime I could find up till 1963.

I've watched some of Daitarn 3, which was 1978.

I want to watch the older Mazinger Z show from '72, but I haven't found it in any really watchable places

Are you interested in any other 70s mecha? Tomino made Zambot before Daitarn, and he directed half of Raideen.
I recommend Babel II if you can find it.

I was curious about Gigantor, so I watched an episode of it on YouTube. Until that point the oldest I saw was Speed Racer.

I've watched pretty much every 1900-1950s "anime" on this god forsaken website. At least those that are publicly available online. A large portion of them are considered lost media so /shrug

@Lucifrost If I can find decent quality showings of them, I'll definitely watch them. With Daitarn I had to stop because the thing I found had absolutely terrible audio. I doubt it's the fault of the show, I grew up with my dad's tapes of 70/80s cartoons.

Mine was Speed Racer, the Western release of Mach GoGoGo. I used to watch that when I was a kid back in the early 70's, never dreaming it was imported from Japan lol. :
