exaggerating that everything is the same

Before 1980 they made only a few types of anime.

(This picture has only one title per franchise.)

Pretty sure they still only make a few types of anime in 2023, but the types are now different.

Well I agree. Mostly cause I re-watched some shows recently and meh japan is very professional at loosing their decades. You would expect some progress in a span of 10 years right ? I do believe that's not how things work but in a general sense just look at how manga arts evolve throughout the years so its natural for me to expect better animation as time goes by . But all i get are trash , how truly disappointing

It was never good to begin with...if you have read Encyclopedia Dramatica, you would know that it is all just a big sham. Like almost everything else online.

I don't think anime is getting worse, but rather that people tend to find anime more boring over time or at least have phases where anime doesn't feel as entertaining anymore, tbf we're all getting older nothing lasts forever.

@Shomix

Highly processed media is media that I define as having a high cost of production and or prohibitive barrier to entry (Ex. Movies, Anime, AAA Videogames, TV, etc) whereas lowly processed media is media that has a lower cost of production or barrier to entry (Paperback books, light novels, Indie Videogames, Youtube videos, etc.) I think what you are suffering is definitely a bit of media fatigue, and I believe part of this this arises because anime adaptations generally are not of experimental or less popular works.

For example, we get a bit more isekai works with gimmicks than horror works.

So one solution is to read more books, watch television shows not from Japan (I recommend the South Korean series Hellbound and Kingdom), go into light novels and manga, or play video games. Another solution is to have a hobby. Just as anime is a great thing after a long day at work, you also need to take a break from the things you enjoy, lest you get spoiled on them, no different than eating at a really excellent restaurants every night.

Hobbies cannot be passive. You actually have to pick up a skill or get better at it. Working out, running, etc.

I do think anime has gotten "worst" in some aspects, but I also am not affected because I do things besides watch anime.

Maybe it's just me but all this talk about Adult Anime is a bit ironic. The closest thing recently to an adult Anime would be basically some drama without any need for some flashy battle scenes or extreme amounts of gore, violence, nudity, which would be a title like "Ōoku: The Inner Chambers".

The real appeal about Anime to someone who is an old school Anime consumer like me is the fact Anime is widely not a medium that is suppose to be taken that seriously. I consume and collect Anime as a form of escapism. Being someone my age who consumes Anime still actually makes me feel a tiny bit younger knowing some of the people I know in real life do not have such vises to cling onto who are the same age as me. Even some of my friends I use to play Halo with in College when there was no online play (you had to get a group of people with multiple Xbox consoles, multiple TVs, and do a lan server setup where everyone was basically in the same room just to have death match battles) don't even play Video games anymore because they simply grew out of them and any relation to video games these days they have are mainly focused on getting new games and consoles for their children instead.

Even back when I was in Highschool, The 1st time I ever experienced lan server Death match gaming was when one day our electronics/CAD instructor (I did a two year vocational training program in electronics/CAD where we had about a dozen students from all across several schools in the area meet for classes during part of the day) set up all the computers in the room to be connected to each other and we had a 1993 DOOM death match the entire time we were suppose to be being taught. It was meant to be an educational experience for us to see the potential of what computer networking could accomplish in a practical sense (This was done when windows didn't even exists and everything we did on computers was always done using DOS).

I guess the the point is for an older viewer, Anime is suppose to make one feel young which is why so many Anime titles are not typically adult oriented. While I encourage and welcome "true" adult Anime material in this medium, the fact that people just get older as time goes by, trying to target an adult audience does not always equate the need to pump out a flood of "adult" material.

As a fairly recent example I find something like "I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too" oddly entertaining to watch. YES, this Anime is complete trash for what it's worth but it's the fact it's the epitome of a male power fantasy just for the sake of a male power fantasy and nothing more makes it so interesting to me. This Anime title goes no deeper than that and oddly I find something like this humorous to watch as well as entertaining.
@ColourWheel Definitely older than me; however, yeah that sums my own thoughts on this discussion.

They were typically no-good to begin with, so I cannot say if they are getting better or worse btw...

Not really, besides the fact that we are just getting more anime in general, so more trash is being made...but also more good stuff. It evens out to how it was.

Sort of. Improved technology that gives various shortcuts discourages creativity and the increasingly corporate and in turn more regulated and oppressive atmosphere (especially in larger studios) have worsened it some in my opinion. Plenty of good things still come out in my opinion, but they are certainly very very different to works even just 10-15 years ago.

I think that your main thing though is more about the current fads in storytelling. All you can really do is hope is that the types of shows you prefer will make a return at some point in the future by a surprisingly successful show with those parameters. It just is what it is there.

No, you don't even have a lot of Anime watched to make such claim. Do you even watch 80% to 90% of all Anime made?

"Kinda feels like there is no more adult themed anime or at least with that adult spice"

Again this debunked argument made over and over.

1) You don't have to be the same age as characters to enjoy an Anime.
2) Many series with adult cast exist nowdays, in fact more than before. If you don't consider adults having fun or claim adult characters "are/look like just high schoolers", then you have a distorted view of an adult in the first place. I'm too tired of others adults claiming adult characters MUST look like an adult (tf is looking like an adult in the first place lmao) or adult-themed series MUST be serious. The term adult has lost any meaning nowdays.
3) Adult spice = hentai between adults? They are many of them so you're wrong.

The problem isn't anime, the problem is you.

This question has been popping up for years.

No, but there are a lot of factors; I think with the rise of streaming and simulcasting, people are just more likely to notice the bad anime than back when you could only watch the anime that came on DVD or aired on tv.

It ain't getting better, that's for sure. I've still seen a winner here or there, but the impression I get is that nearly everything is a cash grab aimed at 17 year old dudes whose entire lives are school -> video games -> anime -> repeat.
