I can see how this is based on a real story, and it's a really effective movie in general. Seita and Setsuko's circumstances became increasingly more emotionally gripping as the movie went on, and the scene just before Setsuko's death where she was delirious and offering Seita the rocks she thought were rice and soy pulp was especially resonant. The one resounding issue I have with it is spoiling the ending by showing it right at the beginning. While I'm aware that it was a literary technique, it and the spirit manifestations of Seita and Setsuko that periodically show up during the movie are something that's difficult to immediately understand. That said, their spirits returning at the end to overlook the city was a nice gesture that added a subtle bittersweet element to an otherwise tragic tale.

@Archean-Return

It's semi-based on autobiographical experiences of the author, not a real story. , which are actually quite different from the events of the anime and the short story that it's based on.

That's why I said "based on", rather than saying it was an exact retelling in an anime format. You can base something on an idea or work (like the semi-autobiographical experience of the author) without adapting it word-for-word.

Watched most of the Studio Ghibli movies, but unlike the other ones, rather than a deep sense of nostalgia and longing to rewatch, I was left bawling my eyes for the last 30 minutes of the movie. Never cried for a movie in my entire life. Despite this, I was glad to watch it because of how profound the message was and strongly recommend everyone to watch this masterpiece at least once in their lives.

This movie was a piece of shit. Hated it. Also, movies like these make me hate Americans lol.

Although from an artistic point of view, this movie was really good. Hence why I gave it a 6 and not a 1. I just dislike movies about wars. Too tragic etc.

As few words comes to me at this moment.. I can only say it's a masterpiece. Only a handful of content had such a heavy emotional impact. Needless to say, the art, design, direction.. it resonates with that Ghibli Studio represents today.

I can't feel sorry for the protagonist, what a tremendous idiot trying to act like the 'alpha male' rebellious and dominating everything, so he left a place where he had all the comforts because his aunt was 'unbearable.' Hmm, she was a woman who was already supporting her own family and without obligation took care of two more children. It's not like the lady locked them in a room, beat them, and deprived them of water. Wouldn't it have been smarter to go out and look for a job and figure out a way to make money until he was an adult and could leave? And on top of that, he selfishly takes his sister with him to make her suffer too when he could have left her with his aunt, under shelter, with food, and good care. Anyway, this movie didn't make me cry, it made me want to punch the main character.

This Movie really shows us, how lucky we are to be born in this somewhat peace era (not completely, we're sure of that but still) today we can peacefully watch any Anime's.
Seita He definitely didn't hold back anything to protect his sister till the very end💔.
Too sad he lost both his parents and his dear sister 😭.
Their aunt definitely played dirty tricks on the them, she should be charged with Harrasment.
War can make even the kindest people cruel.
Inevitable fate of World War II.
Really enjoyed this? conflicting feelings to be honest. I truly feel sorry for those innocent citizens who got killed just because of the country's politics.
Score 8/10 by me at MAL.

Just watched it... I liked it a lot and it deserves any kind of comments - even if you write that you didn't feel anything, something made you log in and type those words.

And about the story itself, guys it's war- no one thinks rationally during those times and especially kids. He didn't stay at the aunts place cuz she was giving their food to her own family and mentally pressing him out - contacting dad , finding distance relatives , finding a job which was impossible to find(not to mention she provoked Setsuko to cry during nights by telling about mother's death). he couldn't work or study cuz school was burnt and the factory wasn't working. and if you think that anyone could find a job if they've searched - you are wrong, there was mentioned that many factories were closing down (bombed , burnt). How could an adult not to mention a kid be able to find work.

as for the later actions he didn't withdraw money and feed her because he was waiting for dad to return. he withdrew so much money after he found out about the end of the war and possible death of his dad (nothing to wait for anymore). He did pretty much everything what was possible... People DIED during and after war. Especially orphans.

I think in many ways this movie is strong and thought out completely not to mention the writer knows best how it was during those times and for us to judge those who lived like that is pitiful.

as for the ending, he promised not to leave her for long and so he did. He loved her till the end and after it, how many people will go that far for you even if they are relatives...

Basically if you didn't understand the movie or had no emotional reaction to it - it's basic : your problem, cuz everything was perfectly explained. If you didn't feel anything try imagining or go through the same experience and then judge them or yourself.

sorry for a long comment.
@SC401se Exactly bro you explained it well

Damnnnn what a incredible movie. It breaks my heart knowing so people had to go through this and died during war times without ever seeing better days. Sadly I was spoiled about the ending otherwise I'd have probably cried but it was still sad and depicted the cruelty of war very realistically. I think it is my new favorite ghibli movie 9.5/10

@JoeChip Yeah no shit, I know the story is based on a book, but it was Isao Takahata who was in charge of bringing that story to life, and the one who is responsible for the film being so powerful and hitting you in the feels. He also did the screenplay for the film.

Hotaru no Haka is one of the movies themed on the situation of World War 2, and is my favorite movie. I give it a rating of 10/10.

First, Apart from the propaganda agenda in the era of making this movie, it gives a big picture of how terrible the situation was after the bomb incident in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. How many lives were lost, the visualization of the process of the "Atom" nuclear bomb being dropped is very terrible.

Second, the other side is depicted through the hard work of trying to survive after the bomb was dropped, many died from radiation exposure, chronic diseases, starvation, and no place to live. This is a strong reason why this movie deserves the highest appreciation. Because it tries to provide a deep perspective on the war situation at that time, and how people tried to survive.

Advantages:

Provides an emotional impact and makes the audience sympathize with the situation in this work. Visuals that are quite good at describing how the era happened. A neat plot, as well as good characterization because it presents characters who can provide a sentimental side to the audience. A clear plot, and a setting that fits the context of the times.

Disadvantages:

The propaganda that is inserted shows that in the era when this movie is present, it wants to forget the dark history and actualize it as a country that was a victim of war, which is actually not much different from other countries that are also colonizing. So it seems naive and hypocritical.

@CosmicGirl Nah. Fuck that aunt. I was done when she had those kids sell their mom's kimono for rice, and told them that they only get rice porridge. Setsuko was right. It was THEIR fucking rice. Her greedy ass was eating good off the food that the kids brought home, and then told them that they get the worst meals.

Seita did irritate me by not taking out the money earlier and not swallowing his pride to go back to the aunt. However, it's fuck the aunt, all day every day.

Seita did annoy me a bit, but I ultimately felt sorry for him. The aunt made it a terrible place for the both of them.

The amount of anger and rage that I have towards the aunt and the guy that took Seita in to the police. Fuck the both of them. Shitty fucking people.

I really hate when a highly acclaimed anime actually turns out to be good but this one did. Probably the best Ghibli I've seen with my current binge which surprised me. This movie is what "In This Corner of the World" wishes it was.
If I have to add one thing I'd say starting the movie with the ending is always a bad choice. Anytime a show or movie does it, it ends up just making the ending less impactful as you already know what happens.
Despite what people say I don't think seita is to blame. As seen when going to the doctor his sister was in very rough shape. That's not what malnutrition does. There was definitely an underlying issue that the malnutrition didn't help with. Overall it's an 8.5 which is the highest rating I've ever given to ghibli. But of course I'm only rating it as an 8 on MAL as I don't think its quite good enough for the 9/10
