I watch popular stuff because I don't have all the time in the world to spend on anime and want to watch what is good.

I split my time between modern good stuff and nostalgic stuff. I don't mind watching shitty old anime if it is quirky. But I'm not going to give 5 hours of my waking time, 13 eps, to a derivative anime that has been done 10x times and better in the past.

I'd say it's more disinterest than laziness. The majority of the fanbase are casuals and normies. That's not particularly a bad thing. It just is what it is. They're not as invested to explore the medium on their own, and would rather stick to what is current and popular for a base assurance of quality and to be part of the conversation. I don't see anime in that way, but I can understand why such fans would do so.

Newer fans nowadays also seem to noticeably have an aversion to older anime. Perhaps cel animation doesn't look as good as the clean, shiny digital that they're accustomed to or maybe they think the art style/designs are outdated. It doesn't really matter what the reason is, but I do think it's unfortunate that newer fans aren't as open minded compared to fans 10, 20 years ago. I've said this before, but I believe a main culprit is the sheer abundance of new anime. There's just so much that comes out every season that they're content to stay in their safe bubble since there's a continuous endless supply. Back then there wasn't nearly as much, so we had incentive to go back, explore and watch older anime. How many fans now would rather talk about Spy Family than watch a classic like Perfect Blue? All that said, everyone should just do what they want since whose to say how anime should and should not be enjoyed.

I think it's mainly because of the huge amount of anime coming out every year, streaming making it all available and social-media indirectly advertising all of it. To be a part of all that you have to keep up with the sheer speed of shifting trends, so there's no time to dig deeper into individual anime.

it also has to do with filtering old cartoons and anime out of racist and sexist overtones, making them less attractive to viewers who missed them in the first place, creating a sort of guilt for liking them.

One can watch and like whatever one wants of course but when one starts discussing things, control and regulations start to occur. So it is not worth it in the end.

and since most discussions happen on private social media platforms with their own version of what is acceptable, old series before the social media boom, become the first liabilities

Most people stick to the more popular and talked about Live Action TV shows and movie, video games, books, etc.
Anime is not different.
They are not here to "watch everything" or "find hidden gems", they just play it safe, either pick what's currently mainstream or classics that are still talked about today.

Everyone has there own degree of enjoyment for shows, movies, etc. Its always important to remember that you cannot expect someone to care as much or less then yourself and that is to all of our benefit. I say this because no one will have the exact same experience, with anything we watch, read or do. This allows us to have a fully free opinion, which gives deeper thought into why we enjoy it.
