Hello,

Dear valuable customer, thank you for reaching out about updating the rating from an anime in our MyAnimeList® anime list.

We unfortunately have no plan to do any rating modification on the title Shimoneta at this moment, we do not feel like adjusting a rating because a customer does not understand how to differentiate the past and the present.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

I agree with you there.

that's probably why most of the fan service in the manga are side or alternatives like the officially endorsed Ero-manga doujinshi for love is war

love is war has always had fan service vibes in the manga with side stories and alternatives. it's only logical to follow one of the side stories as an ova. hence the dedicated fan service chapter was animated.

from what I could remember, this was the only short side story chapter that could fit an ova.

It’s a satirical jab at itself, the anime is a seinen romcom without fanservice as Ishigami mentioned. Why are people missing the point lol!!!!!!

You clearly missed the point of the episode. The Kaguya manga has almost no fanservice in it. The chapters adapted by the OVA (Not including the cooking contest) are adapted from bonus chapters called "Kaguya-sama Darkness". The point of said chapters is for the author to go all out and parody/make fun of common fanservice tropes that you would see in tons of other rom com manga.

Did the anime go farther than the manga? Of coarse, cause its an anime. It fully utilized its medium to go all out. Also since its an OVA and not a TV episode, they don't have to worry about censorship and stuff. The fanservice was not "pointless".

Why? Because I prayed to a pagan god and asked for Kaguya related fanservice. Surprisingly, said god answered my prayer and this OVA came out. And I am happy. VERY happy. Thank you, Echizored Fanxervice, the pagan god of boobs.

happy to see some here as the anime is pretty tame in that regard

This OVA was so wholesome and fun, my attention was glued to the screen 110%. Why do people always have to get upset over fanservice scenes? This special had all the elements of success while parodying the tropes of anime in general. I see nothing wrong here.

remember that bit in s2 where the entire anime went shoujo, changed the art style and characterization, and basically made it into where, while visibly shoujo, it was also apparent that they were making a tongue-in-cheek parody where the only indication was how out-of-place it was?

the ecchi scene did that to ecchi and fanservice shows like dxd, where they go out of their way to try to be hentai, but ultimately chicken out at the exposed genitalia or anything actually sexual. the jiggle physics make high school of the dead look realistic. it's like reading something from "men writing women" on reddit (i.e. "she breasted boobily down the stairs, tits bouncing with every step) put into anime form. it's the kind of meta-comedy that you'd get from kaguya-sama, albeit with a spicier topic that would have never made it to television; hence, it being an ova.

The fact that it is an OVA is what gives freedom for the show to go out of the original tone. In my opinion, they used the OVA very well by keeping the same narrative style while parodying and exaggerating things in a comic way. I found it creative and fun.

I haven’t watched this yet (I don’t know where to) but I don’t get why there seems to be a huge debate here. The actual anime has no fan service whatsoever and like many say it seems that these OVA are based on non-canonical side stories. I do admit that I would’ve much rather preferred OVAs that are more similar to the actual series than this though.

Every complaint I've seen about this has been from someone who only got into anime in the last couple years.

The "fan service OVA" is kinda old fashioned now, definitely less prevalent than it was at the start of the 2010s. Everything back then had a bonus episode where they could bypass TV restrictions.

I've never watched Kaguya but I always assumed it's popularity was due to four-quadrant appeal (males, females, younger, older) like with most things super popular, but I guess not. With the amount of ecchi fans here loving this it seems it must have been targeting young males only.

What do you mean that the show is targeted towards "young males"? Kaguya-sama lacks fanservice outside of this OVA.

Is this OVA not bundled with the BD home release? Besides, I wouldn't expect four-quadrant-appeal anime to have ecchi OVAs like this.

The OVA was a satire/parody focussing on how stupid fanservice in romcom manga actually is.

The manga is published in a seinen magazine, so yeah, it is targeted to young adults, but the manga stays far away from fanservice.

Is it really satire if it literally just does Xebec-level ecchi...? Though I didn't watch the full episode so I guess I can't say.

But you do know that the content of OVAs can differ greatly from the true core of the show right? Even stuff like Hyouka has had such fanservicy OVA.

Kaguya-sama's main selling point is its comedy and romance. (And drama, for me personally)

And then it turns out that was only for part of the first skit which was juxtaposing the antics with Ishigami railing over ecchi censorship tropes, and the "flat chest/big boobs" jokes were just like one or two instances in the first two skits. The final skit had absolutely none of that and hardly had anything to do with fanservice, not that skit 2 had much of that, either.

Maybe because OVAs are usually for that.
This is Interlude between seasons and they don’t want to progress the main story.
Gag chapters or Fanservice chapters are common in Kaguya Sama’s manga, it just that they were not being adapted so far.
But only one episode is out so we don’t know if the other ones will be like that.

There are only 2 "fan service" chapters in manga...and both of them have now been covered.

If I remember correctly, the fried rice competition and the fanservice-y part were manga chapters so I'm going to assume it was just for the ova and not for the rest of the series

Even if they wanted to I don't think they'll have enough budget to put towards the amount of jiggle physics they put into the ova as well LOL

I am a really big fan of the series but honestly, this OVA was crap. The first episode was straight up fanservice which I never wanted to see. The second episode was better. The third was meh. I hoped the OVA to have more content than just being an average fanservice episode. Good thing they showed all this in an OVA episode and didn't add this in the main series.

Because it's appealing to weebs, this is why Oregairu is the best rom-com. A rom-com that actually progress, unlike Kaguya.

Agree, the fan service was absolute trash but I also didn't find the whole OVA as half funny as the main series imo. I just smiled few times here and there, but overall it was honestly just bad OVA, which could have been a passable 6/10 if not for the trash first segment.

A lot of people are defending the OVA. But surely you can understand that the Kaguya-sama anime did something incorrectly. Season 2 had a near 8.7 (average) rating which is quite high for MAL standards. I think season 1 had a similar score. And yet this one single standalone episode dropped to a 7.4. Again, something happened here.

It's not about "Just don't watch it" or "Skip over it" ... it's not as easy as just not watching something you don't like. All works of anime warrant criticism for an unbiased and cumulative score. If an objectively bad anime had ONLY rating by people who liked it, then the score wouldn't be properly representative.

The NICHE of this show -- the reason SO many people fell in love with it -- was because of what it could achieve with witty dialogue and comedic execution and effects and timing. I sound pretentious, probably, but it had a somewhat intellectual humor. One that far exceeded regular cliche anime gags. It was innovative and thought outside of the box. It was always pushing the envelope with fresh ideas.

This OVA was a spit in the face -- and a departure from the show's well-established niche. They sacrificed an entire segment for borderline hentai between the otherwise pure and wholesome characters. The fact that this is "just an OVA" and that it's common for OVA's is no excuse or justification for bad writing.

The OP said it perfectly, "people came to this show to laugh at a variety of jokes not just sex jokes and haha flat chest kaguya, chika big boob lolololololol"
They're exactly correct.

Not every anime REQUIRES the nudity and sexualization of its female characters.

It's starting to feel as though anime showrunners think that -- after a mainstream anime has aired -- that fans are desperate to see the female characters nude or sexualized because they hadn't been during the duration of the series... (if that makes sense)
In other words... I'm trying to say that, is it REALLY unfathomable for a mainstream (and even romance) anime to not have any glaring fanservice?
Or is that a requirement now?

Maaan, this is one of the fundamental reasons people frown upon anime.

I'm glad someone said it.

I don't mind fanservice scenes. I generally don't watch shows heavy with them, but if that's your thing, and the whole 'p.l.o.t.' is a consistent theme across your show, that's fine. But when I search for shows that make a point of NOT being built around that, and it eventually creeps in as 'bonus content' ... well, you can imagine why some people might understandably be pissed.

'It's making fun of ecchi tropes, it's meant to be ironic!' Sure, okay. Is it, though? Or is it a convenient excuse? Maybe it's that the studio isn't confident enough that their product will sell well on its own, so instead, they choose to pander to the lowest common denominator. More booba = more ¥¥¥¥¥.

What's sad is that a show as good as Kaguya doesn't need to do this. It's already successful on its own merits. But since this is the 'established trend' for OVAs, it happens anyway. I think that says more about the anime industry as a whole (and its fanbase) than anything else.

My opinion doesn't really matter, though. For every viewer like me, there's a hundred more who will rush out to buy stuff like this, all so they can click the rewind button a few dozen times while their other hand is ... occupied.

(Sincerely, someone who is tired of having to make 'no ecchi' a requirement when asking around for shows to watch. Yes, this is a new account, but I'm irritated enough over this to finally make one after being a long-time lurker.)

I more wonder why you care so much. I could understand frustration overdone fanservice if it was starting to drown out plot. Or was something that the aniem changed from the manga. But the ova is pure extra content. Its not like it had anything better to be doing.
