Is it myth or fact that old animes (80-90s) are better and the anime industry is dying?

It's a subjective and complicated topic. I personally think anime is doing good. There are a lot more interesting shows than in the past. Sure, they might not hold up, but their push for progress is good to see.

You're asking this question to people who started watching anime in 2012 with Sword Art Online.

Fair I guess but I feel like most people who care about anime enough to be on this site have moved past whatever they started with. My first anime was SAO and my favorite anime now is probably Neon Genesis.

i haven't seen enough of old anime to judge it myself.

BUT, i don't think it's fair to compare two different eras of anime.

Modern tech make it easy to adapt a variety of different stories. This with the increasing investments contribute to many more anime being aired nowadays than in the past. But it also brings more poor production and generic stories. Overall there are many more both good and bad stuff in the last decade than in the previous ones. Plus, you can always watch the good old productions as well. So you just need to choose wisely what you do with your time. Stay safe.

Idk, even if bad, old anime have several advantages over modern anime:

-they were less cringy, there was less self insert power fantasy, which comes from the fact that anime then was mainly manga adaptations, and manga will always be a more respectable medium than light novel which is trashy by definition. An interesting exception is that back then studios were clever enough to adapt classical novels, like Little Women, Tom Sawyer, etc.

What makes Light Novels trashy by definition?

I'm also surprised that apparently people can't do their homework when they talk shit like this and realize that anime is still mainly manga adaptations.

I think he means that manga are still read by somewhat normal people when light novels are 100% otaku trash that indulges in... weird things.

I don't really care about defending light novels because I don't read them, but I dunno, isn't Kino no Tabi a light novel?

I don't think older anime is better per say, but it is undeniably true that the industry has changed a lot and certain kinds of anime are rare now, like 'mature' seinen action and psychological-thriller anime from the 2000s and hyper violent manly anime from the 80s and 90s. This is just a result of the changing times, of course. Those things were popular back then and what people want now is different. The people of today demand their isekai harems and mindless cute girls/boys entertainment. Myself included, of course. I am a shameless moe consoomer. However, I do wish there was more variety.

I know that we still get action and psychological-thriller anime, but sometimes I don't want to look at pretty boys and moe girls. I'm all for cuteness, but sometimes I want a different kind of vibe, you know? Thank god for the Netflix Baki anime. I need to have more buff anime guys punching each other in my life.

And the 2003 adaptation by Ryuutarou Nakamura who takes some liberties with the source is praised way more that the canon one from 2017.

On the other hand being prejudice against certain format (like light novels) sounds wrong. Maybe we should talk about them case by case.

Fact. Anyone who says otherwise has literally never watched anything other than Demon Slayer and Boku no Hero
In all seriousness, I think it's undeniable that the golden age of anime were the 2000s.

Now this is an educated take. There'll always be weird LN's made with the purpose of what they claimed, but the same goes for anime, manga and any other form of media.

I could only think that what gave Ghemotoc that idea were the huge amounts of LN adaptations seen today being fanservicey isekai, when of course the market is way bigger than that.

After much research (30s) I realise now that I was confusing Visual novels and Light novels. My bad. Visual novels are the weird porney things for otaku, light novels are just mass-produced low-effort books for teens.

I'm still gonna stay away. I feel I'm a bit past the age of reading Animorphs and other teen-oriented series.

I read Fate's screenshots of the english translation. That's enough, I'm not sure I wanna go further when Fate is actually considered a good VN lol.

Well im not sure about LN's for your taste, but I'd recommend Katawa Shoujo. Surprisingly well written and a lot better than I expected it to be. Shouldn't knock something until you try it at least.

I actually like much more the 2003 version, but I heard that, and it also makes sense, the 2017 version seems more tightly structured. It's that structure what I think I didn't enjoy as much.

that would explain why the 2003 version is so, so, so much better

apart from the fact that Ryuutarou Nakamura is a talented director while the 2017 version was directed by a god-knows-who no name

Nomad is a classic .

I plan to watch it.

The joke was that Megalo Box exists as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Ashita no Joe. It takes the general plot and reworks it into a new setting. Your praise for Megalo Box is inadvertently praise for the timelessness of a series from 1970.

Satoshi Kon is dead and never coming back. Miyazaki has retired. Anno might release the new Eva film at some point but it's not gonna be the same as watching the TV show and then end of Evangelion. What I mean is that there is good anime being made but if you liked something in particular about the 'best' older anime, chances are that isn't being included in the 'best' modern anime so you won't like them as much. Nowadays a 10/10 anime means something different to the old 10/10s, they don't really compare.

Edit: Okay so Miyazaki is no longer retired but he's very old lol.

I'd say it's a myth that anime just became worse after some arbitrary point in time that apparently separates new and old anime. Whichever year you pick as the year when old anime ended and new anime started, there's gonna be about as much trash on both sides. I, for one, don't really care to think about much about which year was better or supposed golden ages or whatever, and just watch anime.
