I wasn't going to comment until the last episode but what the hell since windy commented I'm gonna chime in.

windy said:
Railgun is basically a parallel to Index, showing us what Mikoto was doing while Index and Touma were off doing Indexy things.

Interesting so is this series a side story that parallel's index?

wakka9ca said:
And this sidestory happens BEFORE To Aru Majutsu, and will reach the MISAKA arc towards the end.

Or is it a prequel?

vinesage said:
Touma is the biggest reason why I dropped Index. I mean, come on, i would give the show a 3 at most (for the animation) because of him.

I remember the last Index episode I watched (8 or 9) when he tries to stop Misaka from killing herself. I was like, "meh here goes Touma, opening his mouth again, got to skip it quick...."

ps: oh yeah, he is exactly the same type as Yuji from shana series, biggest failure of generic male lead....

One should probably finish a series before beginning critical analysis. I'll also point out that I dropped the show too around episode 12 when it became ridiculously cluttered with new story arcs, but then recently went back and finished it before I started Railgun. I'll also point out that the generic nature of Touma/index/... was basically a point that I was making about the industry in general lately. To Aru Majutsu no Index was by no means a great show. It was an average reinterpretation of many different generic works. However, it's initial animation and story were very intriguing and fun to watch, plus the story did evolve, however ineffectively. As the series went forward the Touma/Index relationship never became dynamic and Touma did become extremely static, which is this generic element you are picking up on.

"ultimately it's fanservice also detracted from the story" Quoting myself in reference to To Aru Majutsu no Index.

My beef lies mostly with all the archetypal fanservice, (Yes including the Yuri Drybananna), which has made this opening episode for Railgun seem like it was produced straight from some sort of "How To Create Anime that Otaku's like" help book. I think I'm talking to an empty quire right now.

Windy your probably right, I should drop this show and move on to a better developed and more interesting story that isn't so generic. However it doesn't look this season is going to accommodate me that much and Railgun does at least offer a chance that the story could become more interesting, where as I can't say the same for most other series this Fall. At least there is Inuyasha:FA, that is if it doesn't try to continue telling it's story in lightning speed.

@ Orion1- It's a parallel. I think wakka9a meant that this episode itself is a side plot that is set before when the two series begin to intertwine. My use of "side plot" was referring to the Railgun anime as a whole, in response to how you used it.

I thoroughly enjoy the manga and am expecting to enjoy the anime, but I did not enjoy Index as a whole, which means you may end up liking Railgun if you give it a chance. Obviously you may not, but I think it's worth giving it a few more episodes before you make your final judgment. Where the manga is now is far from what this episode showed as far as character development and interaction.

because both of manga artists are other person, index's manga and railgan 's manga are different in some points from each other.
but I think, these two stories, in anime, will be conformed

I hope you used a kleenex.

I didn't need any. I was on the floor in stitches. :P

Anyway, Touma will appear soon, but as he's reduced to a supporting role, he won't be appearing as much.

I would have loved a continuation of Toaru, mostly because the first season made it painfully obvious that there was going to be a second season, perhaps a 3rd. in the meantime, I guess I'll read the manga.

Not sure what to rate this episode. It was simply a good reintroduction of these two characters plus a bunch of new and really interesting ones. I admit Mikoto's obsession over the frog keychain giveaway was really funny. Mikoto was one of my favorite supporting characters from Index, so I suppose this spin-off is definitely welcome for me.

Let's just hope this doesn't get nearly as convoluted as the aforementioned show.

Saten is way too Amu for me. Not really pleased with her voice so far. I was pleasantly surprised with Uiharu's, though. Guess Toyosaki Aki is more diverse than I thought.

The OP is growing on me little by little. Still disappointed Kawada is not doing it. Interested in the ED because Elisa's songs are hits or misses for me.

Really like how Uiharu and Saten look in their anime forms, but everyone is still just a little too pudgy for my tastes. I'll get over it.

Harumi looks really good in the OP.

Enjoyed Mikoto's DOKO MITTENNO YO and KUROKONOKOKORO. And of course's Amu's 'atashi wa betsuni'.

Overall better than I was expecting. :>

I was planning on finishing Railgun so I wouldn't have to come back to it like I did with Index, but there are a few other shows like 11eyes, Darker Than Black II, Sasameki Koto, Kaidan Restaurant, Kuuchuu Buranko, Winter Sonata and Fairy Tail...that could monopolize my time if they turn out to be really good. Thanx though it's good to know that the manga/graphic novels? are interesting. I will at least give it a few more episodes.

Loved the first episode. It was amusing the animation wasn't bad and Mikoto looks more badass. So much better than Index. Don't know why some people wanted a second season of that instead of this.
Who cares about that annoying always hungry brat. Biri biri is so much better.

Accelerator as a main character would be EPIC WIN!

This series seems to be fairly interested after the first episode, but I will admit within the first few minutes I though it would be a rather generic action series. However, as soon as the school/powers started to come to light it definitely got quite a bit more entertaining.

I read an article this morning about the most popular Fall/Winter anime... and this was at the top of this list so I decided to give it a go. And I'm eternally grateful that I did~

The opening and ending are fantastic and that alone made me want to watch more because that's like the hook~ I'm not too good with the character names just yet but Misaka is really kakkoi~ cool~ I like how she wears shorts under her skirt. I can see Shirai getting on my nerves a bit though.
And why does the one girl have flowers on her head? o.O

Anyhow, I'm planning to continue watching this~ hopefully I can catch up with the current episodes before the anime actually ends. ^_^;
