Hey, guys! This is thread that is comprised of questions that I compiled from the DC sub-forums on MAL. I also included some general common questions I see people asking outside of MAL. Here we go! If anyone notices any mistakes in this, please let me know. Spoiler tags are necessary if it's a question about something that happened in the middle of the series. ------------------ Q: Is this a kids show? It's for all ages. There are a lot of gruesome murders and cases in this show, as well as complicated tricks and motives that have a deeper meaning behind it. For people who are into stuff like Terror in Resonance, Psycho Pass and Death Note, there's actually a lot of similarities in some cases, like intense bomb cases, tricks with technology, cat and mouse chases and much more, especially with Detective Conan's main story episode arcs. So, even if it's for kids, any age can enjoy it. There's a reason why it always ranks in Japan's TV Rankings. If anyone wants a recommendation on which episode to show a specific age, feel free to ask! But really, this is one of the only "whodunnit" Detective anime out there. The other two big ones, Kindaichi Case Files and Tantei Gakuen Q have ended a long time ago. Kindaichi does not have a main plot like Conan and has more mature mysteries, not aimed for kids at all and honestly, some are quite creepy and terrifying and also it is episodic on the most part. Tantei Gakuen Q has a main plot and revolves around the main group solving cases but the Anime ends off at an odd place so you will need to read the manga. ------------------ Q: English dubbed or Japanese dubbed? It's called Case Closed in English. If you're planning on watching Conan and catching up to the latest episodes, definitely watch it with their original Japanese voices. The English dubbed only goes up to Episode 130. Another downside of the English dubbed is that they westernize all of the character's names (similar to how Pokemon) so Ran is Rachel. Shinichi Kudo is Jimmy Kudo. All of the Detective Boys change names too. It'll get annoying when you switch to Japanese dubbed and suddenly, everyone has a different name. I watched dub first and had to get used to Japanese names when I switched over. I don't recommend. The only time I would recommend watching the English dubbed if you want to show it to a non-anime friend or something. For someone who needs to listen to it in English. If you're asking me on which I think is better, they're both pretty well done. However, they're both pretty different. ------------------ Q: Can I show a Detective Conan episode/case to an anime club (assuming nobody has seen it)? What about a movie? Definitely. For the episode, pick one from this list that doesn't have a symbol in the "Plot" column. Well, the "New Character" and "Character Development" symbols are okay. Just don't pick an episode from the Black Organization list. Most cases are 2-3 episodes long, keep in mind. Avoid the one-hour or two-hour specials because they're usually canon to the main story. For the movies, you're in luck because in the beginning of each movie, there's a quick summary of the entire plot of Conan (like how he turns into a kid) and it introduces the recurring characters so you practically don't need to watch the anime itself. The movies to avoid showing to a beginner are "Movie 5: Countdown to Heaven" (arguable, because there's still a standalone mystery in it),"Movie 13: The Raven Chaser", "Movie 18: The Sniper from Another Dimension" and "Movie 20: The Darkest Nightmare" which all have a subplot that requires some background knowledge to the anime as well as characters that appear a long time later in the anime. I definitely recommend giving your club a movie instead over an episode because it's more accessible and guaranteed to be standalone. ------------------ Q: What order should I watch the movies or OVAs in if I'm also watching the anime? Here is a good list: http://dcrewatch.tumblr.com/orderguide I wrote this before I knew of the DC Rewatch list: For the first two movies, you can watch them after you've watched a few episodes in the anime, actually. For the 3rd one, it's recommended to wait until the character "Ai Haibara" is introduced in the anime which is in Episode 129. Same goes for any movie after this one. For the 4th one, watch it whenever you want. For the 5th one, watch it after episode 230 since it contains spoilers to the main plot. For the 6th up until the 12th one, watch it whenever you want. For the 13th one, watch it after episode 504. For the 14th up to the 17th one, watch it whenever. For the 18th one, watch it after episode 734 For the 19th one, watch it whenever. For the 20th one, watch it after episode 792 ------------------ Q: How episodic is this show? Very. There is a bit of canon stuff thrown everywhere. If you're only interested in that, just watch the main story episodes. I covered this in another question, on how to watch it only with main story episodes. ------------------ Q: When is this show going to end? In an interview with DC's author, Aoyama Gosho, he said that he planned on ending the manga when he reached Agasa's age. So, in 2017. I doubt he'll end it right there though. ------------------ Q: Can you watch the Kaito Kid OVA/TV series without watching Conan? Yes. I'd recommend the new 2014 Kaito Kid series over the OVA as it covers a full story rather than just a compiled set of episodic mysteries. ------------------ Q: Can I purchase Detective Conan? There are 5 seasons out (eps 1-130) in the English release. You can find them on Amazon for good prices. The manga is being licensed in English and you can purchase those as well! ------------------ Here are the most asked question(s)... Q: Should I watch this show legitimately or skip fillers? If it's your goal to catch up to episode 700-something, I highly recommend only watching important episodes as well as character-themed episodes. By "character-themed", I mean, episodes that showcase a recurring episode like Heiji or the Police Officers like Takagi. If you like this show a lot, you should follow that and save the fillers for later or watch some fillers while catching up on main episodes, which is exactly what I did. Otherwise, if you have no time limit and lots of patience, go for it. Burn through those 700+ episodes. ------------------ Q: How do I watch it without filler? First, bookmark this list or even copy the data over to an Excel/spreadsheet document (this is what I'm doing). Every episode with a Black Organization symbol beside it (the black stick man) is a must-watch. Then, you have the "New Character" and "Character Development" symbols. Also a must-watch. Kaito Kid episodes are optional, really. They don't contribute to the main Black Organization plot. But most people like Kaito Kid cases, so just watch it if you like it. There are a LOT of couples (ships/pairings) in Detective Conan and it's one of the things that make it fun to watch because they're likable and sweet couples. Skip or not skip, it's up to you but definitely a good plus to the series if you like the characters. Later on, there are "Metropolitan Police Detective Love Story" cases that happen once every season. They're really fun/thrilling/cute so if you liked the first one (ep 146 - 147), I recommend checking out all of them. They're always in two parts (two episodes). Self explanatory but start on episode 1. :P Here is another filler list: Animefillerlist.com. Less specific but you can use this if you don't wanna confuse yourself! ------------------ An extra tip: Do not read character biographies, on any Detective Conan wiki page. They spoil things. In this show, they really like to disguise characters as other characters and whatnot so you'll get badly spoiled. ------------------ Hope this helped! Happy watching! |

This is actually really helpful...thanks. Someone told me to just watch the movies but I was a bit hesitant of not having enough background info. 700 episodes is a lot so knowing which are fillers is helpful, but as a completionist with OCD tendencies, I probably will torture myself with watching everything in order. Are the fillers still enjoyable? |

Hello, As an average DC fan and nostalgic watcher, I consider rewatching Conan from the beginning starting this August (I maybe won't have the time, but patience is sure here haha). Thanks for the guide. I was in serious need of a filler list since I want to avoid unnecessary additional murder cases (like the Canon Manga ones aren't even enough). Here is another useful link for sorting fillers. I think it's useful enough to add it to your thread post. (Did I just read "273 filler episodes" that I can skip? This surely can't be bad news for me!) |

Awesome thread. I forgot Haibara was actually introduced on episode 129, it feels like episode 20 or something when you have watched it 5-6 years ago.. Lol |

This is great! Now maybe I can finally start on the show. I used to watch it on Adult Swim back in 2005 I think. Then I get it in my head to go back and watch the show only to find out it has almost 800 episodes... |

Great guide, personally am caught up with the show, so don't need it but always a great read. I question putting kaito kid episodes as "optional" as he was involved with that bomb train case with bourbon (The jet black mystery train case) perhaps leaving the first appearance of him on DC as mandatory would suffice though. |

Yes, but those episodes already have a main story tag on the wiki :P |

1. I get a dragon ball freeza error when i try to preview my posts. 404 This page doesn't exist. With a picture of Freeza w/black bar over eyes(?_?) Saying "go home" 2. Sorry for all the questions and for 1st posting them with out the spoiler box. I did not think my questions may contain spoilers till the secon after the first posting. [Spoiler]Does Detective Conan have too many detectives? Will one of the main charecters die? (Knowing that main charcters are rairly killed unless absolutly nessicary, and have the potential to be brought back to life) How will they explain the disapearence of Conan and Ai when they return to being Shinici and Shio(i know i spelled her name wrong)? What will happen when they discover who the boss of the BO is and take down the orginization? Are the memembers and the boss of the orginization the good guys or the bad guys? Why does no one call child pertective service, do the main characters need therapy? When conan becomes shinichi for good will that be the end of the show or will the change the name of the show? Are the characters traped in an alternet reality where no one ages dispite the passage of time, or has japan found a way to cheat the aging process but hidden clues to the process in the anime Detective conan? Are the orginization members code names their prefered alcholic drink or is it a list of the bosses favorite to least favorite alcholic drinks? Who ever is named as the bosses prefered alcholic drink is unkown beceause he or she is the bosses secret weapon?[Spoiler] |

Thank you. Clear as mud. would any one let their kids watch detective Conan? if I had children I would not be comfortable with them watching the episodes DEtective Conan that are scary, involves murder and violence. I'm still cringing about my little sisters watching Austin Powers or invader zim even though I watched Austin powers and invader zim when I was a kid. I also watched detective Conan on adult swim when I was a kid. It kinda of confuses me and makes sense to me why I have problems even thinking about kids watching invader zim, Austin powers, and detective Conan. It confuses me cause I don't have kids, but it makes sense because I care what kids watch. When I watched the movie kingsmen the first time I watch the whole movie with my eyes open and I didn't look away or cringe. When I watched kingsmen again I looked away and cringed. If I don't think about anything while watching something I can focus on what I'm watching full attention ahead. If I think I blink while watching. Same thing with worrying about what children watch. If don't think I don't blink. |

nah i read and watched detective conan as a kid i don't found scary or disturb moment the tone in this series don't really have dark tone unlike kindaichi case file which contains dark tone and a lot of better case than conan but i would not recommend it to any kid until they grow enough and found DC is actually boring. and other lighthearted detective show i would recommend Tantei Gakuen Q. but absolutely best detective manga right now for me is Q.E.D. content various case and MC the way he use his logical i seriously like it. |

Nice, I'll be sure to not skip those ones when I'm watching DC then. Is the "and then there were none" the "and then there were no mermaids" episodes? Because I can't find the one with the exact title. Side not, I read that book by Agatha Christie, really great murder mystery novel so I look forward to seeing DC's adaptation of it. I'll soon be reaching a Heiji episode, look forward to seeing him too, sounds like he's a fantastic character. Did you watch all the DC episodes or skipped fillers? |

Well, I have watched all of them and the surest way is - to watch all the manga episodes and skip only those tagged with "Manga source -> TV Original" from the detectiveconanworld.com list. Because sometimes there is essential information into unexpected places or there is really great cases not connected with the main story, like the Mountain Villa Bandaged Man Murder Case or The Mist Goblin Legend Murder Case (Kiri-tengu Densetsu Satsujin Jiken). Also there is interesting background information than is one of the main attractions of the show. Some strange and really funny connections/coincidences like: - Shiratory falling in love in his childhood with Conan's future teacher. - Yumi's boyfriend is brother of Sera, and her colleague traffic cop is in love with detective Chiba. - The original Kaitou Kid is the first make-up teacher for Shinchi's mother. - In fact all the Kaitou Kid connections are fun. - ect Skipping a non essential episode can ruin them. As for the "watch only the movies" idea, I don't agree. Yes, some of them are fun and show great action scenes, but the cases are not so great and stories don't transmit the essence what makes a good Detective Conan story. Personally I prefer the two Lupin III vs Detective Conan movies. (Well, special and movie.) |

They are not substitute at all. Maybe the movies (the good ones from them) can sparkle interest for the series but they are nothing like it. Detective Conan is not for people who cannot follow long narrative. And the anime is not helping by rearranging the arks from the manga. In the source the main story progress is more evenly distributed. In the animation you can wait 100 or more episodes to see some real development or arrival of new important character. |

Yes, maybe. But what's the point? This wouldn't show them the best DC can offer. They will only get some meh SCI stuff with gorgeous stunts and nothing more. There are better standalone detective stories out there. Gateway to the franchise (also to Kaitou Kid) and the characters - possibly, because the first 100 and so episodes doesn't show how interesting and complicated will the show become. (The long wait for Hatori arcs, for Haibara to appear, for Police Love Stories and for Black Organisation development.) But not a substitute. This is like knowing Star Wars only by watching the prequels. |

star wars isn't 800 episodes long OK, I will use another comparison - knowing Ghost In The Shell only by the Arise-verse. You got something sub par because you don't want to be involved. is easier Yes, it is but you don't get much in return. it looks like it's never gonna end The point is if you are fan like me, you will never want it to end. Every answer is drawing bigger world with even more mysteries to come (like Sera, her bothers and her "sister out of domain", the apparition of Rum ect ect). Besides we got the word of Gosho Aoyama the there will be an end. 800 episodes are intimidating because very few series are good after so many stories. Detective Conan is one those that is becoming better with the years (at least the manga is better...we got some really bad anime original episodes lately). The the trick comes from the short arks that provide standalone cases and small details for the bigger picture...and than BAM! you get a main story ark. For comparison - battle shounen titles start steady and intense but are prone to drag after while and became monotone. People are used to this and are expecting the same thing from any longer series. It is a question of thrust for long standing quality, no being scared from getting no completion. |

But when you think about it, not even including the Lupin movies and specials, that's more than 100 episodes worth of content in the movies alone (5 episodes per) so I wouldn't say it's easier than watching 100 episodes of an anime. Better just consider the movies as anime canon since they do have their set of things consistently and even some movie only characters (inspector dude in raven chaser), relationships and themes return in the later movies. It's true that some people actually go to japan to watch them yearly as a tradition so they're pretty entertaining you could say. |

You don't find them good substitute well I find them very good and capture Conan's charm as I said before. In the end I respect you're opinion but whenever I recommend Conan to someone I won't tell them to watch 800 episodes I will tell them to watch the movies.star wars isn't 800 episodes long <br />OK, I will use another comparison - knowing Ghost In The Shell only by the Arise-verse.<br /> You got something sub par because you don't want to be involved. <br /> <br /> is easier <br />Yes, it is but you don't get much in return.<br /> <br /> it looks like it's never gonna end <br />The point is if you are fan like me, you will never want it to end.<br /> <br /> Every answer is drawing bigger world with even more mysteries to come (like Sera, her bothers and her "sister out of domain", the apparition of Rum ect ect).<br /> Besides we got the word of Gosho Aoyama the there will be an end.<br /> <br /> 800 episodes are intimidating because very few series are good after so many stories. >k11chi Yes, extra content...just like 100+ extra anime original episodes. I think there are better and DC-esque TV AO episodes (for example "The Cursed Masks Smile Coldly" story), also there are worst. All of them (for me) totally skippable. Those movies are not so bad, and the better art/animation are compensating, but if I must choose what to omit from the franchise - they will go along with the most of the other AO stuff. some people actually go to japan to watch them yearly Yes, but they are already DC fans and watching a movie even with crappy plot is a happy event for them (for us too). >Accelerator48 OK. I just wanted to explain why I disagree. |
