Here's a few of my personal favorites: 1. Katanagatari (12 eps.) - An interesting choice, but recommended to watch if you're looking for an unusual anime. The series originally aired only a single one-hour episode per month, totaling to a year before the series ended. Great plot, unusual art, lovable characters. Cheerio! 2. Fate/Zero (24 eps., divided into two seasons) - Like others said, this is a great way to start off the Fate series. Also the best in the franchise IMHO. Continuing into Fate/stay night or Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] is purely optional but recommended. 3. Angel Beats! (13 eps.) - Based on a visual novel by Key, Angel Beats! is a good opener to the Drama/Fantasy genre. Featuring comedy, drama, and romance fitted into one tight bunch, I totally recommend watching this. 4. Steins;Gate (24 eps.) - A time travel mystery thriller hybrid, Steins;Gate is one of the best anime series that could serve as an example of how good the mystery genre could get. Apart from these, feel free to visit my anime list for more recommendations! |

Katanagatari is an interesting choice but it should be noted that although created by the same creator it is nothing like Monogatari series ... also action is minimal and conversation is the main plot device to explain the environment, characters and their action and motivation. If you are fine with long conversation then watch it because of unique art style of pictorial book, beautiful music, well developed characters and the last episode ^_^ |

I didn't hate a single one (well, maybe except E********n). :D |

For independent anime movies, some of my favorite ones are: 1. Garden of Words - Somewhat a coming-of-age drama story. Interesting plot, GORGEOUS visuals, and brilliant monologues to go along. Must-watch. 2. To the Forest of Firefly Lights - Yet another interesting plot, great lovable characters. 3. Every Studio Ghibli film. EVER. 4. Grave of the Fireflies - Tearjerker story. Uses empathy to get you hooked to the plot. 5. Voices of a Distant Star - I think this was one of Shinkai Makoto's works. Yet another sad story. 6. Psychic School Wars - Great somewhat-time-travel plot device. Warning: Does not contain psychics or wars. 7. 5 Centimetres per Second - A three-part story about the effect of distance on love. Even the strongest of relationships could be destroyed. Also, GORGEOUS visuals. Would add more soon! :D |

Before doing my recommendation I wanted to go with Garden of Words as well, but I haven't watched it. I think it has the most beautiful and detailed animation (or is it art?) I've seen so far in anime, though it's not like I've seen a lot, so maybe there's something out there that can match the beauty of this movie. |

It is the animation of The Garden of Words which is fluid and so beautiful to such lengths that in some cuts it gives the impression of live motion ... the art style is very strait forward but great attention is paid to the details ... such as the splattering of rain drops and the falling of chalk dust etc. Also 5 Centimetres per Second is by the same director Shinkai Makoto whose trademark in direction is his fluid animation and great attention to small details along with melodrama which some time doesn't come off as good as one would like ... |

Other recommendations: 5. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April) (22 episodes, Drama, Music, Romance, School) - A classic music/drama tearjerker. Along with (obviously) great musical performances derived from classical masterpieces and it's warm-to-the-eye, unusual art, Your Lie in April presents a plot that is sure to make you believe in the power of music. Must-watch. 6. Nodame Cantabile (23 episodes, Comedy, Drama, Music, Romance, SoL) - Another music/drama classic, though not as sadness-inducing as Your Lie in April. I fell in love with this anime a few years ago and I think you will too. The animations and art will take a while to get used to. 7. Samurai Champloo (26 episodes, Action, Comedy, Historical, Adventure) - A beatfest classic. Tune in to the lives of Mugen and Jin and buckle up for sword-slashing fun set to the series' fully-original soundtracks. Must-watch. 8. Planetes (26 episodes, Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi) - Garbagemen in space. That's the shortest summary I can come up with regarding this anime. Don't underestimate this though. In fact, I'll just borrow the following words from MAL Rewrite: "Winner of the Seiun Award in 2005, Planetes is an unconventional sci-fi series that portrays the vastness of space as a backdrop for the personal lives of ordinary people—people who may have been born on Earth, but whose hopes and dreams lie amongst the stars." (MAL Rewrite) 9. Lucky☆Star (24 episodes, Comedy, School, SoL, Parody) - Ever wanted to watch an intense heart-pounding action series? Well, throw that away and watch Lucky☆Star instead! This series is the epitome of parody and comedy. Even though Lucky☆Star revolves around the daily gags lives of high school girls, it will still bring you comedy in its most addicting form. If you want to laugh at random things (from seven-minute talks on how to eat desserts to sadistic news reporters) for 24 episodes, then this show is for you. (P.S. The OP theme is catchy af.) 10. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) (14 episodes, Comedy, Mystery, Sci-Fi(a bit), SoL) - The most intriguing one of the bunch. It's just a normal anime revolving around a few seemingly-normal students. Or is it? (P.S. You can watch this in two ways - Chronological or Broadcast Order.) Hope I helped! |

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) is good when viewed in broadcast order because of the last episode is the most boring one in chronological order. I would also recommend every work by Yuasa Massaki, they are not attractive animation wise like Kyoani animation ... but the story line always make it interesting view ... The Tatami Galaxy, Kaiba and Ping Pong the Animation to name a few. |

However, people are split into two when it comes to introducing new people to Suzumiya. Most are worried that people would get bored halfway through the first episode when viewed in broadcast order. (First episode would be that bad amateur film they made.) Still, I like the broadcast order better. :) |

Recently I watched the film Hotaru no Haka or also known by its english name Grave of the Fireflies, It is based during the second world war and japan is under constant attack from enemy bombings, The journey of Seita and his little sister Setsuko is a true tearjerker showing the unbreakable bond of two loving sibling and just how far one will go for a loved one. War is a horrible atrocity which no side comes out victorious and grave of the fireflies shows many little details about war that simply sad. If your looking for a semi-quick watch and have nothing to day on an afternoon the old classic is definitely one everyone should experience! |

So I found this thread tucked away and thought I'd try to revive it...especially with all the new members. There's a lot of good recommendations here. For me I'd recommend Shinsekai Yori. It was one of the first series I watched when I came back to anime (after re-watching Inuyasha, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebob, and Trigun). It has an awesome story and the art work is great. I also recommend Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood...especially for those who've watched Fullmetal Alchemist (FMA). Once you do, tell me what you think. |

I have two suggestions, one a movie another a series. My movie recommendation is Akira (1988). The reason being that it represents an interesting intersection in production practices in anime between authorial intent and the requirements of adaptation. Akira is an adaptation of the (similarly named) cult classic graphic novel by Otomo Katsuhiro. However, unlike other instances of adaptations, Otomo was intimately involved in the production process. The result is a nuanced and intriguing take of what is essentially an epic tale that explores the nature of technology, globalisation, consumerism, and youth culture in Japan. In addition, Akira is an example of pre-digital animation; the key framing and cel definition is AMAZING. I mean, seriously, the lights of Neo-Tokyo alone are enough to leave a lover of anime and animation flabbergasted. My other recomendaiton is Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu. This series, like Akira, is another interesting example of adaptation. In this case the anime series, released in 2015, is adapted from a manga series (Kiseijuu, Iwaaki, Hitoshi) that was serialised between 1989-1995. Unlike Akira, which maintained the core theme of youthful rebellion against globalised corporate interests the original that can be found in the original novelisation, Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu nuances the originals narrative so as to be able to more actively address more contemporary/local concerns. Though fans of the original manga might not readily acknowledge the subtle changes in tone, theme, and focus of the anime, it nonetheless retains its original narrative of “what does it mean to be human”? Though perhaps a clichéd idiom, Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu avoids being overly banal and clichéd in how it approaches its core theme. In essence, both these recommendation represents an ideal choice for those interested in both the historical significance of anime adaption, as well as those interested in how anime as developed thematically over time. |

I have 2 anime recommendations, though I haven't been at this for a long time so don't expect too much... 1) Neon Genesis Evangelion (Action/Mecha/Sci-fi/Psychological/woahwoahwoahthatstoomuch) My main recommendation for this thing. You don't really need to be "into" the genres of this anime to enjoy it, I know that I didn't really like mecha, but this anime I think did a great job on all points. The anime, along with cool action scenes, has a lot of psychological trippy stuff (especially near the end), and this can be very interesting and confusing at the same time (kinda like Steins Gate). I had a great time with this one. Try it. 2) Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (rom-com) ... Except maybe I shouldn't be recommending this one... To me, the character in this show immediately all related to me, so it was a great watch and a favourite show I've watched so far. My friend also watched this show, however, and didn't have an easy time connecting to the characters, because he wasn't like them. I suggest trying out the beginning of the show, if you don't relate to the character, well, they don't change much after that (it's a rom-com after all) |

Let me suggest 3-gatsu no lion! It's airing right now, but not a lot of people know about it. Its got a lot of funny/cute moments, but at the same time covers a lot of depressing topics. I think it's a hidden gem in this Fall season! |

I'll make three suggestions, all for a different genre. I'll start with comedy and suggest Golden Boy, a favorite of mine. It's a short show, having only 6 episodes, with every episode being a stand alone episode. But this doesn't mean that it's bad at all. (obviously not, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it). Golden Boy is, I suppose, an old (or older) anime than your current stuff and this is evident in the art style, but don't let that scare you off. The show has great comedic timing and the main character is an amazing goofball. I'm having a hard time describing the series as I think that giving the synopsis of the MC's schtick spoils the end of the first episode and with it only having 6 of them, I don't think something like "it's only the first episode, so spoilers are ok" goes here. Yeah yeah, it's an episodic comedy so who cares about spoilers? *shrug* Better safe than sorry. Second one I'll be recommending is an action series. Tiger & Bunny. Now now, don't let the title scare you off. No this is not some moe-esque SoL, series. I'm sorry Moe fans. It's actually a series that I would describe as: if X-men was a sport/competition. Not a sport in the sense that it's a sports anime, but in the sense that all superheroes are sponsored like actual sports teams are. It follows a group of Super heroes that, when fighting crime, are followed by a camera crew that records everything. Basically whenever the heroes are send out it turns into a real life competition. "Who can catch the criminals the quickest. The most elegant. Etc..." That is basically in what kind of world it's set. The MC, Kotetsu, of the show is a veteran hero with the most basic powers of all: he can multiply all his powers and senses by 100!!!.... for 5 minutes... every 1 hour. It follows his life as he is losing sponsorship and popularity and is eventually forced to work together with a partner he doesn't even like (who just happens to have the same power as he has). It's a really solid series if you like super heroes. Finally I want to recommend a psychological thriller named: Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji or Kaiji Ultimate Survivor. This series is great! It's about a gambling addicted man, Kaiji, who gets tricked into participating in an underground gambling competition on a boat that turns his entire life into a living hell. It's been a while since I've watched this series so I don't know how much I can tell without spoiling something, but let me just say that if you want to see the most convoluted games of RPS in a non-action based series where, if you lose, you are literally done for. Go watch Kaiji. You won't regret it. Yeah.... that's about it for my anime recommendations... as you might have noticed I like talking a lot. .___. Please pardon any typos that might be in there. I have a tendency of letting my fingers type away without reading what I exactly type down. Creating some room for typos and the like. Oopsies~ |
