I will suggest Mirai Nikki. It was one of my first animes and it is one of my all time favorites.
It has gore and romance, so if you like one of those genres, you will love Mirai Nikki :D

Going by the gore, horror and psychological genre. If you like those three things I'd recommend the Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Series. It has a great story and since I don't want to spoil anything I'll just say it's a great watch. The only downside is if you don't like plain animation. You might not like it, but I'd say. Give it a try.

Shigatsu Wa Kimi no Uso is also an extremely good Anime. I'd recommend it for anyone who's new to Anime. It takes up the main genre's in Anime which is a plus. It's also in 15th place for the "Top Anime Series" while taking the 30th place for the "Most Favourited Anime Series".

K-ON!
Genre: comedy, music, school, slice of life

I ❤ this anime so much. I've watched both seasons including the movie with 10/10 for all of them. It's very girly so it might not be so "friendly" for any members out there that aren't into that, but H O M G, there isn't a single episode where I wasn't laughing at adorable, dorky cuteness. I highly highly recommend, it's my god-tier anime of all time.

Haibane Renmei is a drama, in a serene land segregated from rest of the world, and tells the story of Angelic girls that live in this land isolated from the rest of the world. It is quite the linear story despite the rather surreal setting, mainly focusing on the development of the main character as she discovers herself and the world around her. It is a very depressing anime, that pulls no punches with its emotions, you will shed tears no doubt. Going into any further detail would spoil it sadly, as it is merely 13 episodes long.

If you enjoy it, watch the other works by the minds behind this fantastic anime; Series Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze.

Anyone looking for horror should check out Serial Experiments Lain & Boogie Pop Phantom, more psychological affairs, regardless their sound design will put you on the edge of you seat. They are both surreal, while the former deals with the development of one character the latter is a more episodic ordeal, yet despite being episodic it is drawing to the same conclusion (I'm not finished yet, so I can't go into further detail).

Serial Experiments Lain deals with the world of the internet colliding with the real world, and all that entails when this happens to a world that is all connected. Lain is our a main character who is a shy lonely girl that has never really used her computer, and when a fellow student commits suicide a rumor is spread about students receiving a chilling email from the recently deceased, when asked if she's received an email she goes to check at the request of her friends and likely her boredom and peaked interest. If that didn't catch you attention then this likely isn't for you, but it's a downward spiral of surreal from that point on.

There's also the classic film Perfect Blue, about a pop idol turned actor who is harassed and stalked by a crazed fan, perhaps because her disbandment from the pop group, that's for you to find out though... It deals with the celebrity image, beauty, and what a positive and negative public image can do to one.

If you want to watch an anime with a mature plot and great climate, i really recommend you "Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin". This anime is just a masterpiece and the best anime from Thriller and drama genre.

Rainbow is a Drama/Thriller/Historical anime about seven teenagers who were sentenced to prison for various offenses. They "have to learn to live together in the same hold in the reformatory of Shio. Confined in a hall where suffering and humiliation are daily, they are waiting for a ray of hope in a dark, incarcerating world. The story follows their life together and how they move on afterwards".

Here are some of my suggestions, they're oldies but goodies and that in my opinion are some "must watch" for anyone interested in anime, and for some reason all of them take place in the future.

1) Cowboy Bebop - it's a masterpiece, it mixed different genres making something unique, something important to point it's that it's targeted to adults, it's not NSFW, but their thematics touch some serious matters.

2) Akira - another master piece from the 90's, it's not a series but a movie, again, not intended for kids.

3) Neon Genesis Evangelion (+ sequels and OVAs) - This anime may be really hard to understand, but it was planned like that, you will need to watch everything several times to understand it, but trust me, it worth it.

Seconded! Some scenes in the first half of the episodes may not be for the faint-hearted, but watching the characters overcome the hardships is definitely worth it. Some may misunderstand it as "dark" anime, but the story it follows is actually one of hope and true friendship.

Steins;Gate is sooooooo good. Time travel done right for once, getting all the science right, having great characters, and an absolutely amazing story.

Parasyte: The Maxim has some of the best character development, and has a lot of really good action and emotions and stuff

Golden Time is one of the best romances I've seen. A bit cliche at times, but overall amazing. Made by the creator of Toradora.

Baka and Test, one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. Nonstop comedy throughout
Nichijou is similar too with the amount of comedy

Movie-wise then definitely Redline and Garden of Words. They are both masterpieces, with the best animation I've ever seen in my life. Must watch in HD

I've got some others, but will post them later

@Time2Fantasize When I first saw it, I wasn't quite sure how to react. I found it a bit difficult to rate.. and I kind of still do. But it's just one of those animes that you appreciate more and more in time. I also enjoyed Hotarubi no Mori e, short, pure and full of heart, and in my opinion even more impossible to rate (I guess I need more experience with shorter animes, haha)

@fuwa-ai It's definitely something worth checking out. Hopefully you enjoyed it ^^

If you want to see a very short anime that should be watched by everyone, I suggest Tsumiki no Ie. Anyone who has watched this will tell you that those twelve minutes was worth it. I will even make it easy for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zywbxDMG8OE

Whoever says that a good story can not be made without having half an hour to explain the story is wrong.
Whoever says you need good animation to capture someone into a story is wrong.
Whoever says dialogue to create a story is wrong.
Heck, whoever says names are needed to connect to a story is wrong.

I'll go and recommend "The Seven Deadly Sins" (action/fantasy/rom/com)

I just finished it up today and it was alot of fun to watch it. All characters have their own personality and all of them get their time to shine.
The story overall is pretty decent, lots of character development and good humor mixed up with very solid action scenes.

As of now season 1 consists out of 25 episodes and I believe season 2 is already announced.
