Threads of Fate (1999) in 16K Resolution turned into an Anime ('Game Movie')

This game is my favorite game so to honor it I got it up to basically a 16K resolution with various things and I'm uploading the 'game movie' to youtube in highest possible quality (each baked file is 40 gigabytes on average...)

Threads of Fate is like an anime TV series the way I edited it so don't worry, it's much better to watch than to play.

it's 7 hours long, not 100 percent uploaded yet, but you can watch the first half right now if you wish. It's very sad, I actually cry in many parts so be prepared for the feels. What is it about? It's about Rue, a 'mysterious boy' who is on a quest for a mystical object called 'the Relic'. The Relic has the power to grant any wish! Why is Rue on this quest? I can't tell ya that, watch the first 'episode' to find out :D

sounds like you're doing god's work for the fans of the game, but be careful not to get your channel taken down.

also, i don't really think you could call a game an anime, so there's that too. but good job either way.

I'm sure you'll agree after watching it, it feels more like an anime than anything else. That's just the nature of interactive media, you can mold it into anything you want.

hehe I don't wanna gloat but I wouldn't be able to count the number of hours I spent on this project. I'm just glad it's done (besides completing the uploads). I'll never hold Threads of Fate below anything, not even Parayste the Maxim, my all-time favorite anime. And I am not sure how a game from 1999 can get my channel taken lol. many other people have uploaded full playthroughs of ToF, but I'm the only one who did a full video editing scan of the entire game, as well as of course making it 16K, widescreen, etc. This kind of stuff wasn't even possible until 2016 when a special video plug-in for the emulator was released.

I'm not too well versed into video "p" and "k", but is it really 16k? The Youtube cog only goes up to 1440p with it. And is 16k for an old game a good idea?

It's a combination of internal and external factors that net 16K, will explain but first, I have to explain what K means i guess. When we talk about gaming resolutions that end in K we are mostly just saying "number of pixels in 1080p resolution multiplied by the number before the k"

so 4K means 4 times the number of pixels in a 1080p resolution.

in this case, there's roughly 15.6 times the number of pixels of a 1080p resolution. So it would be fair to say 16K :P

the emulator (ePSXe) has a special video plug-in called Pete's OpenGL 2.3 Tweaks. This video plug-in has built-in functionality to increase a game's internal rendering resolution (Shadow of Mordor can do this, for example). It goes all the way up to 400 percent. I started with a base desktop resolution of 2715x1527 via Nvidia Dynamic Super Resolution, from there I used the max 4x internal rendering resolution, and if you work out those numbers it is 2715x1527x4=16,583,220 total pixels. 1080p has only 2,073,600


I would have used a base of 3840x2160 (4k) and did 400 percent of that! But, the emulator was not able to support a resolution this high, and it didn't work. I'm very happy of what was possible anyway.

YouTube resolution hierarchy is like this starting from 720p:

1280x720
1920x1080
2560x1440
3840x2160

there is no in-between. 2715x1527 is below 3840x2160, so Youtube spits out 2560x1440

You should absolutely use the highest resolution, yes, very meaningful. a lot of details can't be seen in 1080p setting, so use 1440p.

some quality is lost as a result of youtube compression, however, I baked every file using an average bit-rate of 235 mbps, which is insanely high, so as long as you're using 1440p setting, you will see most of the original details :)

The 235 mbps video was the 2715x1527x4 one, right? Where did the x4 go?



Internal render resolution (increased by 400 percent using the video plug-in) does not affect the desktop resolution (2715x1527). That's why it's called the internal rendering resolution.

I won't pretend to know exactly how this works, but I can paste someone's comment on the subject taken from neoGAF. Note: increasing internal render resolution is the same thing as super-sampling

"More resolution means more pixels.

Super sampling will render more pixels than your screen actually has and then use some algorithm to take an average of the >1.0 pixels and display it on one pixel.


It will almost always look less sharp but it'll look less "jaggy" (less aliasing)"

seems like an interesting game. I might try out an emulation of it as I no longer have a PS1. I've never really been a fan of playthroughs of games so idk how I'd like a movie version

it was 100 percent necessary, I would have gone higher if it was possible too :P

threads of fate is not just the best game ever made, it's the best piece of MEDIA ever made, it trumps everything, even my all-time favorite anime, Parasyte the maxim...

The music, the characters, the story arcs, the intense build-ups and epic battles, the humor, it is unrivaled in every aspect.

If you really insist on playing the game yourself, though, you'll need to download a few things. 1) ePSXe 2) the BIOS file 3) a sound plug-in 4) video plug-ins 5) Threads of Fate ISO

when threads released, it faced a popularity contest with final fantasy and final fantasy won out, even though threads of fate is a million times better. Final fantasy just had better marketing..

I sent a MF link for a winrar file that contains everything, already organized into the appropriate folder. you just extract the archive into something like "C:\Games\Threads of Fate"

if your PC specs aren't super high you may not be able to run the game at the 16K that I did. a fine middle ground would just be 1080p desktop resolution with a 4x internal rendering resolution, that would be something like 4K
