Dragon Ball Z was the first anime I really got into. Back around year 1999-2000. I had friends who always talked about Pokemon in school but personally could never like it myself. The 2nd anime I seriously watched was Yu-Gi-Oh (original). Over the years I kept trying to get into Naruto or One Piece but most shonen's are not my cup of tea.

Today my favorites are Hunter x Hunter 2011 and Yu Yu Hakusho.

Shokugan No Shana was the first anime I watched that made me start watching more anime in general.

I don't even remember why I started watching SnS but I remember liking it and slowly watching more anime.

I discovered this anime called 'Shaman King' on a computer in secondary school. The episode was aired on Fox Kids at that time...

It is now my favorite anime of all time, although the manga is way better but yeah.

But I never watched another episodes or dived into the anime as much, but then I saw an episode being aired on a TV in a german hostel.

Since then anime has been a quilty pleasure of mine. :)

Macross - yes, the shitty, chopped-up, English version broadcast as "Robotech". Still, I'm grateful for the series. It's been a great 30 years since then.

Naruto. December 31, 2005.

I watched several series on TV before that, but I count that as the beginning.

It was awesome in 1979!!!
Re-watched it 30 years later. Wow what a piece of junk, kids are stupid!
Well, anyways, it still made me a anime fan.

When I was young I watched Naruto, DBZ, Inuyasha, Yugi Oh, & Pokemon with no idea wtf anime was. So I guess I was always "into" it but it wasn't until last summer when I saw Erased, and then Re:Zero that got me hooked like a junkie.

I can't exactly remember, but I think it was Gantz. My father found a random DVD on the streets and brought it to me, it was the first few episodes of that show. Not exactly the best introduction to anime, but I loved it back then and I still do.

I watched Naruto as a kid...but didn't know that it's โ€‹an anime. Years later,I was searching for good music like I still do,as I'm a big music fan. Then suddenly a certain track immediately caught my attention. "Nagisa : Farewell at the Foot of the Hill"...it moved me so much...I searched and found out that it's from Clannad. Yes, that's my first 'anime'. And after I finished watching the two sereis,it moved me so much, shaked all the emotional feelings inside.
Then I watched Air,then Kanon...and all I knew that I am an anime fan now.......I respect Jun Maeda so much for that soundtrack which brought me to anime.

(Like a lot of others mentioned, I would always watch Pokemon, YuGiOh, and Sailor Moon when I was younger, not realizing they were "anime")

As for my first true anime start, when I was in middle school, I used to run and go on RolePlaying Forums. There was one friend who was obsessed with RANMA 1/2. They insisted that I watched it, so I did. The whole thing. After that I started watching other animes: Inuyasha, Full Metal Alchemist, and such.

Also around this time, my sister had introduced me to Spirited Away, and I was just in awe after that.

Does anyone else have an oldy like this that started them?

But I know the real world of anime from Full Metal Panic. After it, I always watched more animes more and more.

Back in the 90's, in my country they were airing Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and Pokemon on TV. But since I was a lil' kid and shared a single TV with my parents, I didn't really get to choose what to watch and can't remember much anyways.

So my first real anime experience was in 2004 when they launched A+ channel, which was an almost anime-only channel (they were calling them 'manga Japanese cartoons' lololo) and brought on screen Slayers, Inuyasha, Pokemon, Kiddy Grade, Blue Gender etc. I immediately fell in love with them, especially with Slayers, because I was a big middle-ages-fantasy-dragon-magic stuff fan.
The mindfucker.

in the 80's in the US we had Robotech. as a kid i thought that show was amazing. i knew it was different somehow but didn't know anime was a thing. then in the 90's i saw Outlaw Star and DBZ on toonami and thought those were amazing shows. then in 2015 i realized that i could watch anime online and remembered those shows. and now i realize that american television and movies are crap. Now if they would just dub everything for me it would be great. im starting to have trouble finding shows to watch, and im not going to read my television
I only have a hundred anime on my list, so my opinions dont matter...
