Strangers on a Train: 7.5/10 Would have been an 8.0 BUT the ending was terrible! There were so many ways Bruno could have gotten out of it, but I get the idea Hitchcock just wanted to end it in a "good guy wins" kind of way.
How to fix the review section, detailed here The average reader (HS level) reads at about 200 WPM. So a 500-800 word review should take 3-5 minutes to read. That's an acceptable length for something you're interested in spending 25 minutes to 4.5 hours of your life watching. Oh, and ANN requires any and all reviews to be 800-1200 words, no matter the length of the show.

Rear Window: 8.5/10 Fantastic dialogue, clever, engaging, and of course, Grace Kelly. This is the second movie I've seen that was shot entirely in one room and it takes a well written and intriguing story to keep you focused, which this does very well. It has enough things going on that you don't feel like it's being repetitive and builds a sizeable amount of tension as well. Didn't have the bad ending Strangers on a Train did, and everything felt right.

Mad Max: Fury Road Not my kind of movie, that’s a given. I watched it just because it’s nominated for Best Picture. It was painfully boring. The action scenes were confusing (of course, not Transformers-tier confusing, but still…), the world building was horribly crafted (so many elements thrown into the story without a proper and efficient presentation to create a bond with the audience), the visuals felt fake, the acting and screenplay were cringeworthy, and so on…

Superfast: -∞/10 I have suffered through some bad movies in my time, and subjected myself to some of the absolute worst movies of all time... but this was so incomprehensibly bad that I couldn't finish the first 15 minutes. Please, someone take Jason Friedberg out behind the woodshed and do what needs to be done.

Legend Watched it for Tom Hardy and I wasn't disappointed. I think he is my favorite actor now. The rest of the film was good as well, don't understand why a lot of people were disappointed by the story. Found it fun, liked the London atmosphere and the narration by Francis. 8/10

tom hardy is great. for me - true romance/ocean's eleven ocean's eleven is great but i watched it half-stoned and had to watch a couple of scenes many many times. also it's just... ugly. 7/10. true romance was cool. probably a 7/10. script is fantastic, some of the scenes are fantastic, but alabama is basically manic pixie dream girl for movie buffs and clarence is the self-insert badass. but that was kind of the point so i can't complain too much either? actually probably an 8/10 just off the strength of a few of the scenes honestly.

Brooklyn. Nothing special but enjoyable. Aria-da-Capo said: The Big Short. It was great. I'm not into economics, so it was a bit difficult to follow, I had to pause the video from time to time to discuss with my co-watcher, but overall it did a nice job explaining the most important elements to understand what's happening so that a deep understanding of the mechanism is not required. I loved how they used pop references as a timeline. Also, Steve Carell did unexpectedly good in a more serious role. I hope it wins the Academy Award for best picture. I changed my mind about this one. It ultimately left a very insipid aftertaste. All in all, The Revenant is better, but I must say that not even one nominee left a strong impression nor really enthralled me. The next (and last) one is Room.

Cold Fish. First Japanese movie that I actually finished. I don't know why but I liked the male lead character and his actor in particular. Something about him draw me in, like when he just stares and is lost on thoughts. It's decent. And most importantly I felt like I've gotten used a lil bit to hear Japanese in a live action movie. The lead actor really sounded natural, though some actors/actresses sound like they came straight out of an anime. Planning to watch love exposure next.

Rewatched Paths of Glory. Definitely one of my favorite Kubrick movies. Maybe my absolute favorite Kubrick movie actually. Just like most of his other movies, the dialogues are very clever, full of sarcasm and very enthralling, the cinematography is great, every shot is like a painting, the actors' body and facial expressions make the scenes really vivid, and he's a master of the show don't tell style. Although there are still few sequences that are not on par with the rest of the movie. For example, the whole reconnaissance scene is not as well crafted as the rest of the movie, and it ends with an abrupt cut. I guess the editing phase is to blame for that passage, or maybe that's just me. Anyway, it doesn't hinder the flow of the movie, it's just a little detail. In general, the two "action" scenes (the reconnaissance and the attack) were a little weak. Other than that, it's a portrait about humanity and his code of honor, vices, virtues, integrity, responsibility, and they are themes I love. I'm easily enthralled by classy and clever dialogues, and this was the case too, but I prefer when I can also feel lyricism and emotional struggle (nb: a combination of lyricism and sobriety, because I hate melodrama). The dialogue between the two soldiers before the attack and the segment before the execution tried to explore this aspect, but were not really effective. On the other hand, the final scene was heartwrenching. Another great example of show don't tell, and a strong emotional climax after the epilogue. I felt that scene, and shed a tear. Overall, it struck a chord with me, more than Dr. Strangelove, enough to be one of my favorites. I really should (and will) rewatch most of the movies I watched when I was a teenager, because I was too young to feel and understand those movies.

Kill Bill: 9/10 By far my favourite Tarantino's movie. It had exciting fight, great choice of music, great use of color, and a badass lead. It was awesome. It Happened One Night: 8/10 The original romcom movie. Can't believe netflix has it. Incredible chemistry between the two leads, everything didn't feel forced it's like the movie were meant for them, and many jokes inspired by this film alone, oh that hitchhiking leg was funny as hell. I had a genuine laugh.

Watched Room Not bad, I liked the story concept, and it has very nice camera movements, but it's still not very memorable nor noteworthy. The kid was really good, by the way. Rewatched 8½ Classy, imaginative, brilliant. Despite appearances, it's actually a pretty straightforward movie, with just that little bit of surreal touch. And it doesn't indulge in grotesque representations like other similar movies would do. Very close to my idea of cinema. Ot at least, one of my ideas of cinema.

Taking Woodstock Ang Lee did a good job of making his viewer experience what it's like to be a part of that 1969 festival. The lack of music was dissapointing but thankfully, the supporting actors(particularly the mum & dad) were interesting enough that they kinda made up for it.

Other than that, Now I finally watched all the movies nominated for best picture, and so I can draw a ranking, based on my impressions: 1. The Revenant 2/3. Room 2/3. The Big Short 4. Bridge of Spies 5/6/7. Spotlight 5/6/7. Brooklyn 5/6/7. The Martian 8. Mad Max: Fury Road I often change my mind though, so it may change in a month, or a year. |

A Streetcar Named Desire: 8/10 Finally got to see Marlon Brando in his real action. Amazing character studies to each of the cast flawed but that's who we are as a human being. And an incredible performance by Vivien Leigh. Rosemary's Baby: 9/10 Mia Farrow performance as a pregnant mother was downright convincing. It scares me to think when I have a wife and if she is pregnant, will her behaviour be like that, if yes, then I'll have a great wild ride.

The Big Short. It had excellent presentation but for someone like me that lives in a third world country and has no interest in the economy, it wasn't interesting. I did like the cast of actors a lot. Mostly used it as background while multitasking. Very informative and seem to have a lot of effort put into it. I did like the social commentary at the end.

GONE WITH THE WIND COW HOLY; HOLY COW!??! What. I started to rewatch this movie yesterday and I just finished it, hehe. I didn't remember anything about this movie, actually. All I remember was that meme. That meme made me watch it. But... What a lengthy and fascinating movie this was; I FEEL REFRESHED! No, I didn't. The funny thing though, that meme wasn't that good; wasn't that bad, also: doesn't give a damn, I know. It wasn't worth it, even. But why was it this long? Glad, it didn't turn out to be Satantango! You know, I was afraid, like, for a moment. But then, he said that he doesn't give a damn (and that day, the meme was created). Frankly was also created. Clark Gable almost won an Oscar. For real though, I still don't understand why I wasted my time on this movie. For that meme, I watched this movie, like, 238 MINUTES?! That was a long time, you know. Hopefully, you'll find something in this movie except for that meme and nostalgic factors. But if you aren't interested in old movies, then I'd humbly recommend you to run away; don't even bother! But preferences are preferences, opinions are opinions. Maybe, it'll become your favourite movie. Who knows? The Oscars blessed this movie, after all ;)

Watched two today. Sideways was very good, well written and funny and human. Nothing visually spectacular but captures material well. In the Company of Men was a decent black comedy with a few good jokes but was mostly just... boring? It's the same type of glengarry glen ross alpha male salesman sociopath villainous character done to death - i mean, the movie's not new, so i can't expect too much but i find that shit tedious as all hell unless they're exceptionally well written. Dunno. Finishing amores perros tomorrow and maybe will watch brick soon.
