That was a funny first episode :) I hope the rest of them will be funny like this one.
Also I liked to see Hinamori Amu's personality. Is totally different that I though...

I've been wanting to watch this for like a year now but kept getting sidetracked. Really solid start, hilarious and cute. Amu seems really likable right off the bat and it'll be interesting to see how all of these character transformations redefine her life. I can't get enough of that OP either, so catchy and Amu's wink at the start of it just gets me every time.

Wow, very good start! I was kinda worried it would be too childish, but I didn't feel that way about this episode at all! There were some childish parts, but nothing really over the top (and I'm saying this as a teenage guy...lol). This episode was actually surprisingly funny! "Guardian characters? That's stupid!" "Those who say they're stupid will die." LOL

Her parents are kinda weird... "WOW OUR DAUGHTER IS SO COOL AND SPICY!" :D wtf??????

It's pretty cool how relatable Amu is as a character. I really like the contrast between her outer appearance and those thoughts she has in her head. Looking forward to next episode!

This episode left such a strong first impression. I loved the whole thing from start to finish. Where do I even start?

There were a lot of small things that stood out at the start of the episode: Amu initially appearing to be this indomitable boss of a character (quite unusual for mahou shoujo protag!), the English opening narration that was actually spoken properly, the very nice OP, and the Utena references (specifically, referencing the two puppets and Nanami's egg episode) all piled up and compounded into me getting sucked straight in.

I've gotta say, as a base concept this whole "character" thing is really great stuff in how extensively it connects everything. The "inner character, outer character" issues Amu has are both amusing and leave a lot of room for potential growth; it ties directly into the way magic works in this setting; and it even adds some nice fourth-wall-leaning spice at times whenever Amu realizes how "out of character" she has acted/looks/etc. due to the way the magic works. Having Guardian Charas that represent/embody their owner's ideal self and can force certain behavior changes (fairy body-hijacking ahoy) is a novel, and commanding one's belief in self (deciding to change one's self in some way) as a direct source of power seems like it could have limitless possibilities-- and indeed, it looks like Amu may end up having many, many different mahou shoujo transformations ("character transformations", as the show puts it) which I find to be very cool.

I want to add too that I really like the gender balance here. I've seen it a bit before in Cardcaptor Sakura, but having just as many guys who can use mahou-shoujo-like powers as girls is always refreshing to see, and it goes a long way toward making the magic feel more like an embedded part of the setting. Also, while I'm on the subject and given the apparent size of the recurring cast, it looks like this show may forgo monsters of the week entirely in favor of character-oriented drama and combat, which if true will also be something I'll praise since having a monster-of-the-week formula would mean the show would have to work harder to stay engaging as opposed to more linear developments.

And finally, because I simply can't leave them out, Amu's family is delightful. Her parents are so quirky and her little sister dancing around and singing in that little idol outfit was completely adorable. I'll proxy thank the mom for Amu's fashion choices too even if Amu herself doesn't care for them that much.

So yeah, great start overall. In summary:

☑ Fun lead character
☑ Novel, very literal power system
☑ Seemingly many magical transformations available (i.e. likely little to no stock footage)
☑ Refreshingly good gender balance amongst magical people
☑ Appears to be forgoing the monster of the week formula
☑ Good first impressions of the extended cast
☑ Good atmospheric balance between humor, mellow, and serious

I'm very pleased and hope this turns out to be as good as my impression is.

I really really shouldn't be starting another series considering how slow I'm going with Precure and Pripara, but oh well, here we go!

First episode was neat! I got quite some Cardcaptor Sakura vibes from this, Amu's struggles with her personality are very cute, but I feel bad for her. Ran being able to just make her be like she wants is scary tho, that confession in front of everyone, oh god.

I watched Shugo Chara as a kid, and it was a major part of how my taste in media developed and me becoming a die hard anime fan, and after all of these years, I can say that episode 1 reminds me of why I was so enamored with this show a lot. I'm really excited to watch it all again.

This anime was obviously influenced by Revolutionary Girl Utena.

Also... Is it bad that I ship the main girl with the black cat? 🥲
