i thought this was an amazing episode, although it is only the 8th episode, it's too memorable. wasn't someone i liked, but i personally have an affinity for seeing flawed and pitiful characters. (probably why ushiro caught my attention immediately.) when i understood that she was making her way over to kill her teacher, it sunk in for me just how strongly the concept of "playing god" is displayed through the piloting of zearth. the first time i was aware of it was with kodaka, who was rused by the thought of being able to decide who lives and who dies, that only those who are the chosen will live. yet, he killed the very father he looked up to since birth on impact by accident. chizu's personal vendetta against the teacher paired with an actual vessel to carry out her wish nearly caused her to conscientiously take away someone else's life. all pilots are murderers in one way or another...

i did want him to die. they're both screwed up, if she's already fueling zearth with her life force then kill two birds with one stone. but it was infinitely more satisfying to see chizu not only struck with an inability to kill her sister and her teacher, along with coming to terms at the end. the simple flashback of her family life as a child followed by her cradling her own unborn child, lifting a head to the heavens. unlike the others who unceremoniously died within moments, kako who didn't have a chance before getting crushed, chizu had some form of closure. she even wished for the happiness of her sister, proof that she was on her way to healing. haven't read the manga yet, since i'm going for the anime first. apparently it's toned down here... i'm interested in how this character's arc could differ significantly?

it does seem like the extraterrestrial robot... monsters? what should i call them? are related to each character, confirmed with this episode's vital point. i wonder if this is all some sort of experiment conducted by aliens to observe mankind. isn't it unusual how organized this system is? who set it up? it's not a spontaneous rise to arms on defeating them - this pilot-to-monster shit is implied to be a cycle. kokopelli looked at the other chairs in the cockpit, as if imagining his group from the past.

i first watched bokurano more than a decade ago as a young kid (uninstall is still one of the best anime openings to exist, can't accept no for an answer) but ironically i wasn't able to grasp bokurano at that age... i was confused and would pick it up to drop it twice more again throughout the years, until now as a young adult. it keeps tapping into my recurring existential thoughts on what it means to be alive and live on earth, among billions of people. and you yourself are but a fleeting speck of dust, gone at any time. lucky to be remembered, most undoubtedly forgotten. the world you are fighting to save does not know you, and you too do not know the world you are saving.

So I was correct about the lights in Zearth's eyes representing all the contracts. I think these enemies that spawn in are just kids in a similar situation from another reality, since they also have lights.

I love how Chizuru, as stupid as she is, kills probably thousands and causes millions in damage, and yet can't bring herself to kill a certified pedophile who uploaded a video of them having sex on the internet and has no sign of ever changing.

Guess the teacher is going to continue with his antics then, since he was spared.

The enemy mechs aren't particular strong, unfortunately. Chizu had a full conversation while doing absolutely nothing to stop the chainsaw mecha slicing at the back of the Zearth, yet it barely made a dent.

I still want the sick bastard behind bars. Someone seriously needs to report him for all those CP images and videos he has.

Also, there's no way the sister is not aware of the disgusting things her “boyfriend” is doing.

She was vulnerable and a child, I blame the adults around her who did not protect her.

Even sadder that Chizuru was pregnant :( makes sense she tried to take revenge against the teacher
