Too bad he was wasted, he deserved his own villain arc. he is arrogant as f, he will ride on his shrewdness til the end of time. it often gets him nowhere good my assumption with the whole beard thing is that he was so wrapped up in being evil that he forgot to remove it, or started enjoying the resemblance he had to a pimp meanwhile i'm like "son no that is not a good look for your host-y self" part of the reason why i think the animators kept the beard was laziness, some of his scenes in ketsu were reallyyyy badly animated and probably would've been worse without, but his first and last episode features were far better animated than the inbetween ones for some reason, the animation when he didn't have the beard was a vast improvement over when he did. eh i just dont remember him wearing it for so long in the novel series? I have so many qualms about the ending, and moerover ketsu in its entirety. not that the light novel gave him enough development either, there'll never be enough venting to describe just how underdeveloped i feel he was, despite him having great potential to be even nastier than Izaya- a fullblown vengeful psychopath with truly no regard for lives- there was no execution. the anime takes what the light novel did give him and condenses it down to nothing, not even a hint of explanation nor any of the more individualized traits & tics the novel gave him. they also cut his more 'vulgar' dialogue (he talks about making Mikado strip naked and dance on camera at one point in the novel, the only more vulgar lines he had in ketsu were limited to perving on Harunas body and talking about raping Kasane) for the anime and gave him no screentime despite his being the "main" villain of the last arc. mannn it pisses me off. and the aforementioned ending.... dont even get me started. the five literary w's (who what where when why) are completely squandered by the lack of realism to the whole "getting captured by that stupid ho" scenario (how does some waif like haruna carry a tall albeit thin guy, especially a badly injured one, anywhere? if someone helped her, who the hell was it? why did izaya give her access to anything, i thought he would just dump her in the end? anyway, it lacks even a hint of realism), that was even in the original novel and just felt like a cheap copout to get things over with. i hhaaate that cheap ending. besides the fact that I inexplicably love Nasujima's design and character potential as a villain... what a waste of Yuuji Ueda's voice talent. like holy crap does that man have a range. he can go from psycho to meek in nothing. That kind of versatility ain't something you just finding lying around, shame he isn't in more prominent anime roles nowadays. I looove his voice's tone as well. How could you waste that amazing seiyuu on nothing? This just isn't faiiiir. |

| As far as I know the Japanese think a beard looks unkempt. That's probably one of the reasons why there are not many good looking anime characters with beards. Hell, the only times I've seen a beard in anime was either with unkempt characters or shinto/buddhist priests. |

But I'm not going to lie, this is the main reason I came; You'd have to be mad to think of this. Omedetou. A shame you guys are thinking of 'attractive' here, because when I think of beards, these are the first images that come to mind. And here's some food for thought; See the pattern? This is why monogatari Kaiki kind of fits in here. You could say that having facial hair and a bit of age goes hand in hand. It brings you to Captain status; a step above attractive. |
