I don't think that necessarily that everything is better in Japanese. Sure I watch it in Japanese 98 percent of the time, but I like dubs too. |

I've found that I can't stand most dubbed Anime that I like when I was a kid. But there are a few Anime that I always watch dubbed rather than subbed. They'd be: Ghost in the Shell and Evangelion. I think both dubs are great. Other than that I try to watch Anime subbed, but sometimes I'll watch it dubbed when I'm playing video games or something just so I have something on in the background and I can still follow what's going on even if I'm not actually watching it. |

Of course animes in Japanese are better. I do enjoy decent English dubbed anime as well. Taking Clannad as an example, there are a few decent English fan-dubbed ones. Though they should do something about the Japanese names they are pronouncing like giving them a close English name or something... |

I prefer watching older shows dubbed, because the original Japanese just sounds too dated to me (ex. Yu Yu Hakusho, Fushigi Yuugi). |

Sadly I used to be part of the sub elitist group. I'm capable of watching in both languages however, I've come to take a liking to dubs. These girls at school tried brainwashing people to become sub elitists. It was quite sad they had me convinced for a long time that subs were always better. Usually those elitists over from my end fall into the Narutard category. No offense to subs only, but wouldn't it make life easier on you and fans around you if you could learn to enjoy both and not get so defensive about it? |

I enjoy watching both, but some of the newly dubbed anime are kinda badly done... like Lucky Star and Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni... I dont stick with one. Some anime I enjoy 100000x better dubbed though~ Those including Full Metal Panic, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Case Closed/Detective Conan. I dont know why, but the VAs just seem to sound better than the Seiyuu... |

While I usually prefer subs over dubs, if an anime is dubbed by Funimation, I'll consider watching the dub. Funimation did a great job on Dragonball Z and Fullmetal Alchemist. tentacle_raep said: there is one exception to that rule: cowboy bebop. kimichan09 said: Dont go calling people idiots... >.> Especially when you dont get what theyre saying. A typical anime fan is BLIND to options beyond Japanese vs not Japanese. Personally, the word "dub" isn't even in my vocabulary or lexicon anymore. When it comes to this topic, I either specify by language. Most people tend to forget that anime can be shown in languages more than just Japanese OR English. Though, naturally, Japanese is default - where - no doubt, the anime is produced under the Japanese language initially. Though, I must say. It was weird seeing the Over 9000 videos in Spanish and Italian. XD Bottom line: There's more to this world than English or Japanese. |

Actually an interesting phenomenom happens about this. In most cases, if you first watch the dub version, you ll find the original voice strange, lame. If you watch the original version first youll think the opposite. But if you really are a fan of anime and keep watching a lot of series, youll always find dub kinda weak. |

I'd consider myself an anime fan and have enjoyed many a series (in both English and Japanese), and the entire argument for or against either the Japanese audio track or any sort dubbing boils down to only two things: personal preference and opinion. Before whoever arrives and intends to contradict you say, I just wanna say that what you said makes total sense! I mean I always found dubs to be good for one reason or another. Case in point, I found the dub of Lucky Star to be WAY funnier than the original not neccesarily because of the voices (I actually like Nozomi Sasaki playing as Patty better than Patricia Ja Lee), but because the dubbed dialogue is far more hilarious than the translated subtitles. Misao (subtitles):"Contrary to her looks, Ayano's scary when she's angry." Misao (dubbed): "She looks all sweet and mellow but piss her off and she'll cut ya man!" And I find that totally hilarious! I also happen to like the idea of hearing the Yugioh 4kids dub better than the original. Not because of the acting or anything, but there's something about the feel of the original version that you at times can't help but be bored watching it. That being said, depending on the "feel" of the anime I may like hearing the original version of an anime better than the dubbed no matter how great the dubbing is. I like how in Rurouni Kenshin, all of the dub actors pronounce so many Japanese terms while still maintaining their acting, not to mention I like how Richard Cansino applies a more masculine voice. But I fell in love with Japanese audio as soon as I heard it because it gave a more authentic, Japanese feel to the Meiji era setting of the show. That's one of the rare occasions where I will like the original audio better than the dub. Other than that I personally don't understand why people would say that Japanese audio is better than dub when many people don't even understand the language well enough to determine good and bad acting. I'm certainly one of those people even though I learn Japanese here and there. But it's as you said, no mater how you slice it, the basis is preference. |
