In terms of cause and effect, would it be the case that the characteristics that made the light novels less popular also impacted anime potential? I'd assume that both can fail to pick up for the same reason.

Yeah I was thinking of mentioning something like this. It could be that the Golden Time LN is not very popular for the same reason (characters too old perhaps). Of course, it could just be that not many people like the story in general. I haven't caught up to it, but what I've seen hasn't been too bad in my opinion...

My initial reaction to Nagi was "I have to buy this!!!" but some of the first cour episodes turned out to be less than 100% rewatchable unfortunately.

Understandable I guess. I actually think I stopped watching it for a bit early on (Hikari annoyed me...boy did that change). Although personally I may go back and watch some episodes as I suspect there may have been foreshadowing/important moments that I was either oblivious to or didn't attach enough significance to (or maybe didn't understand for what they were lol).

Don't remember it ranking, assuming some tankobons have come out for it. It is based upon the anime so probably nothing new in it which is the usual for manga BASED on anime rather than the other way around.

If there's absolutely nothing new, I wouldn't be surprised if it's not nearly as good as the anime. Without the auditory aspects of the anime, I'm not sure how it could even compete (maybe you can imagine it?). I think the music is fantastic in the anime, and I don't just mean the OP and ED. Music adds a lot for me, and in drama it can be really powerful. For example, the climactic scene of episode 13 of NagiAsu. It's already an intense scene and it probably is or will be in the manga too (if the manga is/gets that far), but the combination of music (maybe I'm just a sucker for violin and piano), voice acting, sound effects...it's so powerful. I'm not sure such an effect can be duplicated in a purely visual medium.

On the topic of the OP and EDs for NagiAsu, I actually like all of them. Yanagi Nagi is a stellar talent, but Ray actually did well too in my opinion. I think these OPs may be the first songs of hers I've heard/liked. As the OPs are towards the beginning of the episodes they seem to set very different tones/atmosphere for the first (more fun and carefree) and second (emotional) halves of the anime.

GuP OVA bluray number 1 on amazon. Yeah!! WCW kind of weak these few days. I hope it climbs back to 20-40 as the new episodes go by.

And that Gundam BF 2nd bluray box is really holding its ground. Still not falling on the top 100. 10k average perhaps?

Ranking summary for 02/10 - 02/16: http://www.someanithing.com/?p=892

Yearly, seasonal, weekly, per-volume, 10k+ etc you know the drill.

Thanks jmal. Quick question though, why does your per volume ranking have NagiAsu 1 at 3,678 and NagiAsu 2 at 4,182, yet the average is 4228? Something seems fishy about that...

I'd like to see NagiAsu average over 4k, though I'm not sure how realistic that is. Not sure how to predict it though because of the unusual late boost. Anyone know how the extras were in the early volumes, and how they compare to the later volumes? The late boost seems to imply to me (though I could be wrong) that it has a good shot at maintaining a pretty consistent average, as people seem to have bought it for the story rather than the extras though perhaps we shall see.

Wow Dangan Ronpa really fell from its first volume huh? Extra perhaps?

And what's up with the noticeable increase for Freezing Vibration from v.1 to v.2? Did the v.1 DVD not rank or something? Same for Valvrave 2...And why the increase from MJP 7 to MJP 8?

Such is the tyranny of thresholds on lower sales series. (Though it's a heck of a lot better than it used to be.) It's especially bad for all the titles you've asked about because of their release dates:
NagiAsu v1: 12/20/2013
Freezing s2 v1: 12/25/2013
Valvrave s2 v1: 12/25/2013
Majepri v7: 12/20/2013

Around the holidays, thresholds are very high so many many titles did not rank on DVD and some didn't get a second week on BD either. Late January by comparison was much kinder on their respective next volumes.

Aha! So that's what it was. It makes so much more sense now lol, perhaps I should have known something was up. All of those volumes were around the holidays when the thresholds were high...that makes sense.

And your way of doing averages does seem to make sense, and would usually seem logical since you would think the 1st volume's DVD would sell at least as well as the 2nd volume's (and averaging a 0 in would almost certainly be underestimating). But with NagiAsu the boost came so late that it's difficult to be certain that that is the case. It probably is, but NagiAsu is such an unusual situation, it throws what seems like reasonable logic into doubt lol. But yeah, doing it that way makes sense, things just become a bit unclear when you have a very late boost.

^^^ Some might argue that deciding to buy a 9 disc series AFTER watching half of it is the more logical course of action but it isn't how people buy Japanese TV anime series discs most of the time. Nagi is 1/1000 or something unless we see it again soon.

After two weeks of low thresholds, next week's looks like it will be pretty high, so many shows come out this week.

Well I meant logical based on what we've seen of the typical buying patterns. Whether or not those buying patterns make sense is a whole different discussion lol. Personally I think it makes sense to see a bit more of something before buying it.

And honestly, I think it would be nice to see another NagiAsu in terms of a late boost. It's nice to see that people didn't judge a show too early and were swayed by what they saw later on.

Posted the estimates for next week(02/24 -> 02/30), earlier than normal. Its a busy sales week, and I gotta have time left for tommorow to do the bi-monthly sales estimates and Borderlands II.

Cool. Is it greedy if I want to see NagiAsu3 over 4k and WA2 over 3k? =) Though even just a bit under would still be pretty consistent for those two.

And as for Golden Time...awww...Oh well.
