Oh, god, the remake of Let the Right One In pisses me off much more than oldboy. It might have been the best vampire film ever, film making wise. A shitty US sequel will depress me to no end.

I agree with your other posts too, i find the whole idea that films have to adapt to american tastes and mindset to be idiotic.

Let the right one in was definitely a great movie. It is rather surprising that they're doing a remake of it already, but go figure.

People keep missing a huge point though. Remake = money. Look at the departed, as previously mentioned. That movie got huge, tons of awards, and was basically all taken from infernal affairs. Given: if you're going to take from a movie, you should take from the best.

That's the primary reason, I think, but other reasons also lie in sheer cultural and backgrounds differences. To experience what an asian viewer experiences in contrast to what an american viewer does has the chance of being completely different in that much of the movie is based on that culture.Even if translated, it's rather challenging to convey the cultural meanings and significance behind certain actions/words in the movie, or the such. The audience changes drastically, and it's rather hard to expect the American audience to have the experience the asian filmmakers intended for its asian audience.

Well I cannot possibly fathom how any not-brain damaged person could not understand or enjoy the original Oldboy movie just because it's not made in their home country. It's the same with the Ringu movies for example, it's not as if they're shrouded in "mysterious Asian culture" or anything.
granted, if you are one of the guys still living traditional lives deep in some jungle and have never truly been exposed to western culture, I could understand, but we are talking about people living in globalized cultures here.

There's a lot of people who would refuse to even watch it because you have to read subtitles Baman.

No, Germany does it too. I grew up with it, but I came to hate it.

Luckily, we hardly ever dub anything in Norway, the only exception being children's films and cartoons.
There have been some disturbing changes lately though, with some EA games releases. Yes, I understand Spore and the Sims are aimed towards a young audience, but Battle for Middle Earth? Kampen om Midgard? My eyes bled when I saw all those terrible translations. Luckily you could choose to install it on English as well.

The departed had Scorsese as director, that makes it ok.

Plus i cant be mad at the departed since i believe it was better than the originals.

The Departed's cast was almost all A-list actors. That and Scorsese saved the movie from failing. I think both versions were great except Infernal Affairs' ending was more realistic and IMO better.
