Hes dense enough to fall for anyone for comfort, but I think his love for Inori is a true matter.
Yeah we can fantasise on who we want to pair up with, but I believe Inori x Shu is the way to go as they share each others pain instead of licking each others wounds.
i.e. Shu & Haruka and Shu x Hare

So i suppose ShuxAyase is the "chosen" pair; while its not a bad pairing, it still leaves bitterness, It would have been nice if they at least confirmed that pairing instead of leaving us to "choose" how it goes; because in the end he was really left with nothing, kind of makes me wished they died together.
I dont think there's much choice to make. Three years later Shu is sitting blind in a park fantasizing about holding Inori. Anime makes it pretty clear that despite how much time has passed, all Shu sees is Inori, and that is who is heart is with. No special scenes with Ayase, no moments with anyone else, nothing. Just sitting alone thinking of Inori.
Ppl want to pretend there's a Shu x Ayase ending in there because its much less depressing than Shu as forever alone. But the canon ending is just that, Shu x Inori with Inori dead, and Shu being with her in his thoughts. Three years man..THREE YEARS and he still aint over her. Call a spade a spade, the writers didnt really leave any *choice* in there. Of course shippers will make it anyway because they can. Nothing wrong with fanon though.
It didn't say three (i think) it said a "few" but even if it did say three, there are relationships that go like that for
years before showing results, its not like Ayase went with anyone else, and also if she likes anyone its hinted to be Shu, granted i will give you he sees only Inori he may only ever see Inori but like you yourself said you never know, i prefer not to have a Simon forever alone ending, allow the one optimistic thought! :P
I wholeheartedly agree. Honestly after re-thinking things a bit, i have to say that Ayase x Shu pairing is on par with Inori and Shu pairing in my book. There's no denying that Ayase has feelings for Shu (Shown quite obviously within the last few episodes), And Ayase is Shu's closest friend next to Inori and the fact he said she was perfect/beautiful (still weary on which it is), and telling her to stay pure.....While it might not be too much at the moment, there is definitely something there in Shu that could be built on.
Also....If Shu is blind.....It makes me wonder why he closed his eyes to see Inori when he already can't see......Confusing..
Even if Ayase showed feelings toward Shu near the end, does that cover the relationship of the 22 episodes Shu and Inori shared? No. We can be optimistic and say he will move on, but wouldn't that make things much sadder? I would seriously kill myself if he did that; Shu x Inori had it going, thats why I feel bad for him, only able to fantasise her.
He is living in the last stage of the Apocalypse, living with only memories.
