Do you meditate? What do you think about meditating?

As the question already suggests - do you meditate (even regularly maybe) or have you never done it?
What do you think about others who meditate? What do you think about meditating itself?

A good friend of mine suggested me to do it, but I'm really unsure about it. I don't feel like it helps me much although I am trying it nevertheless. To be very honest I just feel really weird doing it because I am often very distracted by the guided meditation... I feel like the voice distracts me from the actual practice of meditating, which is what I am trying to do. Or maybe that's just me, idk :D

I have tried it along with mindfulness and stuff. Doesn't really do anything to me. I guess I just can't concentrate enough or something.

@Serafos yeah I feel like I'm in the same boat. it's nice for sure.... but I feel like nothing changes really. neither myself nor other people will be affected by it. I can only see the benefit of it if it actually helps you to be more calm and mindfull I guess. But I'm not sure if that works on me....

I do the grounding technique, which requires a little bit of meditation and visualization - which was a part of something my family did when they were into spiritualism. I do that maybe twice a week.

I have had one lesson of meditation, but I could never have total concentration or free mind to do the routines.

Yep, I have. There's many forms. Of the popular mindfulness meditation, the practical benefit I have seen is that it deals with two skills. (1) Noticing when I have diverted from my (simple) task. (2) Effectively nudging my attention back to my task. This generalizes outside of meditation. If my performance is being assessed, thoughts of self consciousness may arise. These thoughts themselves can reduce my ability to perform. Being able to recognize when I'm caught in such a mental trap and then knowing how to get out of it can be helpful. Another example would be if I am having angry thoughts. It is helpful to be able to notice that I am having angry thoughts and to nudge myself from those angry thoughts. I mean, ever have someone yell at you that they are not angry?

That said often I'm using it to just calm myself down. I don't do it as frequently as I used to.

The gym provides me with more than enough peacefulness these days. I have tried meditation, but it hasn't worked. I'm a very impatient person so that probably hinders the process.

I've tried it like once and while it was relaxing, for some reason I just never stuck to it. Guess my brain just craves dopamine too much, I should really work on that.

I tried it and I think it's pretty cool. But for me personally, usual sleep just works better. I fall asleep when meditating anyway.

Yeah, I meditate quite a lot actually. I try to meditate once a day, and get about 10 minutes in if I can. When it starts to feel like a chore though I will take a few days off. I find that it really helps me level out, especially if I am about to go to sleep, or I am waking up. Meditations with breathing exercises are very helpful as well as affirmations. I used to really like this app when I had my iPhone because you could meditate with rain sound effects, and that was useful for getting me in the zone, and drowning out the tinnitus. Unfortunately it is no longer available on the app store, so these days I use Balance which is okay. You can’t have sound effects in the background but I find the person talking to you through a meditation comforting.

I intend to meditate but struggle to remember to do it and have trouble finding the right moment I can do it uninterrupted. Meditation doesn't have immediate effects, it is meant to build up neural pathways which takes time.

Id suggest you consider trying yoga or tai chi to increase your mind body connection which itself can act as meditation once you become focused on it. There also is walking meditation but I find it a little annoying a technique sometimes. These can all be a type of mindfulness. Also i find it easier to meditate after a jog when you are out of breathe some. Maybe you would find "autogenic training" created by German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz in the 30s to be easier technique if relaxation is your goal. It is basically sort of a mind over body method where you train your body to relax on command. However there is other things that can be looked at, do you have a forward posture? That can be result of poor breathing habits which can tighten certain muscles in your diaphragm in the back making you feel more anxious.

This is commonly done with earthing where a person is barefoot on some dirt or moss or grass which is cozy when soft moss.

I do try to spend some time disconnected in prayer while going on a walk. I have tried the mindfulness meditation - emptying thoughts, focusing on sensations, guided through a story. I see the benefit of making time to remove distractions and spending time with your thoughts (or attempting to clear them if they are bogging you down), but I find prayer or just thinking more helpful and simply spending time outside more refreshing.

@traed It can be done that way, but with the stuff you have have to say out loud with the process, I prefer doing it indoors because I'm self-conscious.
Also I have no grass/lawn here lol.

I have focus attentive issues, so to celebrate the recent Lughnasa I devised (or maybe Lugh whispered to me) a simple meditative ritual.
I will light an incense while sitting outside in a relatively quiet spot at night, and, will force myself to hold the incense the entire time as it burns in this inverted-heart gesture. It's supposed to be shaped like a Japanese shrine, to enshrine the god. As long as the fire is burning I can meditate and commune with god. The sole red cherry of fire keeps me focused, and it also helps ward the bugs a bit. I came out of it feeling very intense and euphoric.

(After visualising roots come out from both feet & back chakra, and visualising tumors amongst roots)

"I am fully and firmly grounded, earthed and centered into the bowels of this earth"

(After visualising the Tree sprouting above your head, reaching the heavens above)

*Saying 3x times after inhaling & exhaling*

"The leaves and the branches of this magnificently strong tree collects all the toxics in the atmosphere, and sends it down... down... down... into the bowels of this earth, to be recycled."

Had the words on a paper which subsequently got lost.

@Loyal_Sheepling But yeah, after that exercise ^ you're meant to sit and meditate, but I don't do that anymore, just the exercise.

I know of at least one out there that has simplified this into a Hagal rune - ᚼ
They are an expert at meditation though.

That is kind of a ritual at that point. I think you can say it in your mind if you wanted instead but I dont think even saying those things are inherently needed. Version ive done is simplified picturing being connected to the core of the earth and just focusing on the feeling of gravity connecting me to the ground, only did this a few times i think so i dont recall if there was more to it.

Is just staring into nothing for seconds, contemplating life or daydreaming, considered meditating?

Anyway... I don't think I've ever meditated seriously, whether religious or spiritual. It's not my thing.

One of my favorite modern writers mentioned that he made an effort once to stare at a blank wall for about 8 hours and highly recommended it.
He goes on to say that overall, people today are too impatience, anxious, etc. he included.

I love to meditate, it chills me the fuck out. Thinking too much is so much wasted energy, so I appreciate the chance to just let my mind empty.

Yes, I meditate somewhat regularly, not everyday as I'd like to. It's just about watching my breathe, and a connectedness with the moment. During an active meditation I do, I am fully present and it's about doing it with totality.

I started doing it regularly this year and.. it's different. When I used to do it in a meditation center, among many people, it generally made me feel great, sometimes it'd be so powerful, I'd just stay deeply calmed, not talk to anyone for hours. But after I had left the center, I felt very low energy for many days (it could be my health), however, now I'm feeling good again.

It's different every time i meditate, each time feels different, and it's hard to capture in words what happens, but, overall, it's what I should do more, I think.
