If any of you guys ever stream shows on AnimeFreak.TV, just to warn you, I just got a virus on there called Antimalware Doctor. It was a BIIIIIITCH of a virus! It swamped my computer with windows and wouldn't let me open any programs! It took about an hour and three different programs to get rid of.

The virus most probably made you think it came from Animefreak.tv

I think this is your computer's way of telling you to download anime instead.

It could be an ad that gave you it, if it really came from af.tv that is.

You generally get such viruses from the ads on sites. Use adblock and you'll be fine. Though I think people who stream deserve to get viruses anyway.

We are just lazy to wait for downloading.

It's from the adds. I got the virus two days ago and my mom has finally gotten at it. It's been 7 hours and we're still trying to get rid of it.

Not sure if this is his main reason, but streaming gives the stream site money through advertisements, whereas downloading fansubs does not give anyone money. It's fine if it's an official stream, but not only is there no reason to support random streaming sites that make money off of stealing content, but it also is rather dickish.

It was from the ad's. My point was that AnimeFreak has ad's that give you viruses. And for the guy who said he's trying to get rid of it right now, download the free version of MalwareByte's from their website. The virus will tell you that it can't open it because it's an infected file, but just don't hit anything and it shouldn't actually close it.

It could've been from anywhere, like an ad for example.

That's what you get for using a site that uses an advert agency that doesn't double check their adverts.

No, no, he is 100% right.

It's a lot better to watch downloaded anime, going to those annoying sites...you're just asking for trouble.

Same here. I've been going there for over a year now and haven't had one single virus. The ads are quite annoying though.

Yeah, aren't most anime streaming sites from the virus countries anyway? Like Russia, China, Vietnam, Korea, Philippines, etc?

$50 bucks says you weren't using one of the following (well, I'm not actually going to pay you, figure of speech and all that):
Firefox/adblock/flashblock
An up-to-date version of Windows, preferably 7
UAC
Anti Virus
Firewall, software and hardware

You won't be virus free, but... seriously, there's a lot of hoops for something to go through to infect you.

I have both a pop-up blocker and flashblocker and I got two viruses from animefreak. The first was fairly easy to identify and get rid of because once I hit ctrl+alt+del and looked at the processes, the virus' process was in Russian. I'm still in the process of getting rid of the second, though. (I'm sure that the viruses came from animefreak, because the viruses both appeared just as I got onto the site. With the second one, I wasn't even streaming any anime before the virus popped up)

I use to watch anime on that site a ton before I started downloading, and I never had one single problem with it.

It wouldn't be from the site it's self as stated, but an add.
Or perhaps you got it from a different place without realizing.

If you're not going to download anime, then you should probably use animefushigi(dot)com. In my opinion it's a lot better than animefreak.tv and there's not as many annoying as hell ads.

You can get viruses from even sites you feel the most safe on, i've heard of a guy who got a virus from http://www.apple.com/...

Now just to throw this in, it's even possible to bind servers to .jpg or .wav files, for example.. (got patched by windows some time ago, anti-virus programs tend to block it nowadays)
Point being, everything you do on the internet comes with a slight risk.

I have gotten rootkits from SEVERAL different anime streaming websites. Like I've said with my computer repairman, it most likely came from the ads or other add-ons on that site. Adblock plus helps, but it won't prevent all of them. Your best bet is not to go on these sites in the first place.

Now, I learned my lesson and download like everyone else (even though I hate waiting). If it's THAT much of a problem... you could become a Linux user and your chances of getting viruses will decrease drastically.

EDIT: On a second note, have you tried restoring your computer to an earlier state? This doesn't always work, but for minor viruses and stuff, it generally does (at least for me).

Thanks, person who gave me this on another site a long time ago, lol.

Ho ho I just got a terrible virus today from animeultima. As guyklc said though, restoring your computer's a pretty good option if all else fails. The virus I got was Win 7 Home Security 2012 which essentially shut down all my other programs and the restoration was the final method I tried to get rid of it, and thankfully, it actually worked.

Hi,

SUPERAntiSpyware

Then google AdBlocker. Should be the first result! Really simply to install and you don't have to click on anything. Works like a charm :)

This. I don't use streaming because it's not even half as convenient as newbies and casuals like to think, but it's somewhat common for sites to keep the core of the site clean. Unless they are actually malware spreading asshats in which case no amount of content filtering will help you dodge the hazards.

Dunno about anyone else, but as someone mentioned already with UAC, anti-virus/anti-malware software running, firewall, ad-block and keeping the internet security settings to medium or above, I've had no problems with malware or viruses. Not to say something could not happen, but it does lower the risk factor.

That being said, I still prefer to download, for both quality reasons and I honestly do not think it takes longer when you compare downloading an entire season, to buffering each individual episode while streaming when they have comparable quality. To each his own though =)
