In my Opinion, I think we already saw it coming that's why most people are mad about it.

The main character was Otonashi and everything else are supporting. People just thought "hey~ Yurippe's a leader, she's a main character" - but she's just playing her role as a leader, not a supposedly main character. Kanada was not a main character too (if someone tries to bash me using her)

As for the ending, I hope they showed more than just a blurry fading effect. We don't even know for sure if he was Kanade/Otonashi, but we kind of expected that because we saw their hairs match each other and the hymn that "KANADE" was doing.

Overall, I think most of the people who's raging about the ending wanted to see more of their rebirth than just a 5 second sneak-peek, I understand. I'm mad about it too, but isn't it ok that we knew the were reborn? Don't be mad why they thought they were going to be an insect and then showed normally,

It was just something any other humans could possible think before they rebirth OR die. No one knew exact what would happened if they vanish. They just wished they would live a new life.

Kanade had powers because of the program (ARE YOU EVEN WATCHING THE ANIME? Please, stop trolling. It's so last year.) As for that vice-president, well you got a point, but haven't they already explained it that everything is possible in their world! "Guns are made from Mud' so powers can come from anything "as for Kanade, hers came from a software program - DUH?

No idea how Kanade died young and got Otonashi's heart. Maybe Otonashi's heart wasn't that helpful? or I think Kanade went to a coma and lurked into their place "BUT" How could she last long if she already had Otonashi's heart? wasn't she in that place before otonashi arrived? That's what I am confused about.

anywho~ The anime was entertaining, it made want to expect a new episode after an episode just like CG2 and other good anime(s).

Would anyone want a new season just to show what happened to them in their next life? I do

As for the people who voted 1 over 5, I'm surprised you even bothered voting. If you hate something, you wouldn't even touch it. Kids

I'm leaning towards rejection of the organ. Sadly even with organ transplants, you have to take medicine for the rest of your life to prevent rejection due to the body's immune system attacking the organ as a foreign object. The medicine used also carries side effects among which is an increase in getting hit by disease (as your immune system is kept within a certain boundry).

But when the story started, how come Kanade was already there and Otonashi came in last? It doesn't connect at all.

Right.
I realize why Kanade went there first now.
And also why Yuzuru lost his memories.
It's all so OBVIOUS.
Because Yuzuru is still 'alive' as Kanade's new Heart so for as long as she was alive with his heart,he was brain dead that long. You see? Brain Dead and memories lost goes well together yeah?
*Random Faceless Guy*:But wait that doesn't tell me anything about why our Tenshi went there first!
Oh right yeah. err....Simple. How dumb can you get. She was infected with his spirit and decided to pass on His/Her heart again that's why he didn't die even after she did...See? No plot holes at all.

NOTE:I'm just screwing around with you so don't take this so seriously ^ ^

He was an organ donor.

That means his organs (and by extension him) were still technically alive.

He couldn't go to the after life until all his organs died and he was completely dead.

His Heart Alive...but his body not completely dead....so he wait for his turn to go

on purgatory if the heart died

Well as noted by Otonashi in his talk with Hinata this episode, he wandered into the world when he should not even have been there (he's a bug). Where he wandered, no one knows (maybe not even him) but "wandering" probably takes time so that would handle the time difference

- quite a nice ending.
- I laughed a bit when Yuri disappeared not just before Otnashi and Tenshi, but also before Hinata (thus proving that eh is the mainer main character). So much about her being the main female of the show XD
- OtonashixKanade FTW!
- it is interesting to hear that Kanade had Otonashi's heart. Shame that didn't stop her from dying young tough
- I felt sad for Otonashi when Kanade disappeared. I guess that he will spend a lot of time in that place before reincarnating
- I don't get why the end confuses people. The characters die, come to purgatory, move on and reincarnate (which is not very unusual in the east)
- also, it is not important how a character died. The characters aren't here because they died (in case you didn't know, nobody ends up alive in the end anyway) but because something in their life caused them to regret something

I give the anime a 8.5/10. The anime had a lot of good moments and art and animation were on high level. The greatest weakness' of the show are caused by its short length so we didn't get to explore many other characters and plot moved a bit too fast (seriously, anime's should stop with the 13 ep's trend... it often ends bad because there is not enough time).

I though if a heart is alive then person is alive. if heart stop beating then person is dead. if yuzuru was dead in that tunnel. how his heart was alive? and i don't know much about medical stuff. is it possible to donate a dead person heart to someone else and that is possible to transplant? i know its possible for eyes for some time.. (8/10 hours.. not sure)

I also agree that it was slightly unexpected for Otonashi to suddenly develop feelings for Kanade, it was sort of anticipated but was just too fast at the very end. But technically, you'd prefer him to be crying like a pussy as opposed to Kanade right? Imagine the roles reversed in that last scene...probably better the way that it did actually happen.

In the anime world, who says there's only one purgatory? Wherever they "move on" to could also be another world, it's not like you know for sure that their existence is erased permanently. Imagination keeps the options open.

Thumbs up at the final twist, that Otonashi did in fact manage to save someone's life through organ donation, now he has solid proof to be able to move on; and the irony adds on because Kanade also told him earlier that she was sure that his donated organs were able to save someone. She knew that she was the one saved by him, but he was only accepting her word at the time.

EDIT: Yeah, thumbs down for the time difference between Otonashi and Kanade arriving in that world. Missing some explanation there.

seriously someone needs to explain the time difference between Otonashi and Kanade

I wish this series was longer, but I still liked it even with all the plot holes.

I would have liked to have known more about the other characters and to also see them disappear and to know how Kanade and Yuri died.

Didn't really expect Kanade to have got Otonashi's heart from a transplant

They stretched this last episode a bit too much, but I have to say I liked the solution at the end (before ED).. don't know if the very last part was necessary, but Maeda usually doesn't leave you with bad endings ;)

Overall with all the bits and pieces missing, this anime could have been much better with a proper pacing in, say, 18 episodes. Angel Beats! had its very great moments - I think the 2nd part of Otonashi's flashback was huge, but the anime did not follow the overall concept but stucked at places "what needed to be in there" (concert scene, baseball, fishing, fighting, ...)
I'm rating this currently a good 7/10, what would make AB! the least rated show I _finish_ in these days. Good anime, but much behind the hype that was created (and still exists.. look at 15k+ dvd&BD sales on the first day!)

I really enjoyed solution. After the first part of the episode I began to wonder what happened to Kanade. All in all this episode was really well made. Can't deny that I had teary eyes at some points (and I cried when Naoi disappeared) but I still liked the bittersweet end.
I just hoped the Anime would have been longer. Like HoaRy said stories like Otonashi's were too long while other characters didn't get a single peek into their past.

24-26 episode its hard to make story on this one it can be more fanservice or any anime will lookalike other anime(this is one new in bookshelf of Key so 13 episode is more okay than 24-26 episode

I thought most of this episode was boring and uninspired, up until the Kanade/Otonashi scene at the end. The very last scene was interesting, but could have been a lot better.

I want to have hope that the DVD only episode thats released late this year will give us answers to what was going on the entire time, but at this point I don't expect much. They'll probably try and milk another series out of this.

Ideally, though, that episode would continue from where the last episode ended. Which him reaching out to her. From there, I'd like info on how he got out of that world, why they were there (If they're not dead, and in comas, I'd like to know, because a lot of their backstories made it seem like they were dead).

Good series, but the final episode was entirely lacking.

What was the point of 12 episodes when they served this kind of ending? First reblelling against god, then indiana jones soap operas and matrix. Last episode was supposed to be metaphore of beginning adult life? Whole situation with Otonashi's heart and last few minutes imo were out of place. 7/10

If you take into account all of the good drama, comedy etc. then i'd say in all it was a great anime. But there were too many things which could have been explained better.

For the people wondering why YUI got more Screentime than Yuri, it's simply due to the fact that otonashi had just discovered the reason for him being there, and wanted to test out if he could really make people disappear or not.

Also people seem to think Yuri was a bigger character than Kanade/Otonashi. WRONG. Yuri was placed as a leader, and yes, whilst she was the one who esentially saved the world in which they are in, she was kind of in between side-character and main-character. I did quite enjoy her tsundare moments at the end though.

I'd like to know why Kanade was in the world before Otonashi though, thats the bit which confuses me the most. Yeah i understand that he got his memories etc. because he was laying on his heart (don't know why they have working vital organs in that world anyway, they're dead) on kanades chest, but if thats the case he should've died first meaning he was first into this world.

Someone mentioned about the creator of the angel software not being reverted back to a human from an NPC. As said by his minion, he would be pretty much impossible to find in the thousands of pupils in the school, so it's massively unlikely he would be found, as nobody knows his name/what he looks like.

I agree that endings from TK and the others would've been great, or at least some sort of background, because it feels as though they were only as important as the NPCs only more screentime. In the special lets hope we find out what happens to them and if they are in fact in 'heaven' or if they are back to their original lives.

I really would've liked for an extended series, but i think hoping for a 24 episode season wouldve got boring. There just wasn't enough storyline for a 24 episode series other than watching peoples stories then them just disappearing.. after a few episodes it would get tedious and boring, no?

An out-of-the-ordinary 18 episode series or something could've covered the story line pretty well, instead of the rushed last couple of episodes.. I'd have liked to see the Yuri story, as well as Kanade, but i think the writers already gave enough of the yuri story as it showed why her life had been incomplete.. the death itself was obviously not important. Kanade's story was explained somewhat, but only verbally, i'd like to have seen her in her previous life and seen what type of character she was.

All in all i thought this anime was great, there were a few downsides, as there are in many great animes, but i think anyone posting less than a 5/10 needs to be shot. If it was less than this you would not have watched it, you would've watched something else. KanadeXOtonashi would've been nice for a kiss, and maybe an "I love you too" from kanade instead of "Thanks" but yeah, i'm gonna give a 9/10 for this.

Hopefully Angel Beats remake in a few years like Kanon, thats what this anime needs :D

I agree. But 24-26 eps might have been a bit too short to do all the character's back-stories plus having them disappear one by one and keeping the story up. The setting is quite small too; not a hell of a lot to do in a school =S

Would you agree that Otonashi is the creator of Angel Player and possibly the God of that world himself.

In episode 12, the computer guy said that the Angel Player is used to change everything in that world, but it caught a bug because love manifested in that world. Which is in conclusion in Yuzuru's to Kanade/Yuri to her friends/etc.. And love cannot exist in that world because "everyone must graduate" in that place, as philosophized by the 'creator'. So a bug existed. The creator then used that 'bug' to reset everything and turned the NPCs into shadows = resets. After being turned into shadows those NPCs are again to exist in a peaceful school-life world[ As experienced by Yurippe]
More:(long)

To be honest this is the first anime from Kyotoanimation that I actually liked, 'cuz for me they just bring too much drama, but I loved this one. Although, it ended with some many unanswered question, I can't bring myself to rate it lower than 10 D: it's just that something about the whole story broke me down or I don't know. Opposite to most of the ppl, I liked it mainly because there were so many unanswered questions, I think that's what makes it a masterpiece.

I have to admit, right up until the last few minutes I was thinking, "Meh, nice ending but not fantastic." The whole graduation idea was nice, and having just the five of them had a sort of close and oddly final feel that I appreciated, but at the same there was also a slightly... tacky feel to it, if that's the word. It lacked a certain je ne sais quoi, let's put it that way. Things started to pick up when they began to vanish - I did think Hinata would go before Yuri, but in a way, given how Yuri was kind of side-lined after the first couple of episodes, this is probably more fitting. Still, even then, I felt it was good but not brilliant.

Then it made me cry.

... yes, in a good way, before you ask.

I honestly wasn't expecting to cry. I mean, I knew more or less what was going to happen, and I hoped it would be touching. I expected, hoped even, to feel a very clear sense of regret. But even as little as a minute before it actually happened, I don't think I really expected Otonashi to confess to Kanade. I anticipated that it would be implied, but that direct reference would be avoided. But then he did. And it was seriously one of the most bittersweet moments I've seen for a while. It was when he actually fell forward that I finally felt my eyes go moist. I didn't expect it. And that was probably what made it so wonderful.

So that was enough for my estimation of this episode to hit 5/5. Sure, it wasn't perfect. Sure, like the rest of this series, there were things rushed, left unsaid, not given time to bloom. But, like the rest of this series, it had it where it counted. And that's enough.

And now, before I progress to my usual list of miscellaneous thoughts on the episode, a word on the epilogue.

I won't dignify it with the term 'ending' in the same way I don't dignify that zit on my face (rhetorical at the moment, thankfully) with the term 'nose' - it's not, but instead an uncomfortable little growth on the end of something wholly superior that fills onlookers with a vague sense of nausea. Well alright. Now I'm being overly harsh, to both the epilogue and the zit.

It wasn't terrible. I don't hold cop with the argument that it was out of the blue - it was made pretty clear from the very start of the series that people who moved on got reincarnated, so I'm sorry all you nitpickers, but yes it does make perfect sense that they're alive. Just because it thankfully avoided something as horribly unsubtle as '18 YEARS LATER' doesn't mean time hasn't passed, either; I don't expect Tokyo City will really look that much different in just under two decades' time, and we did only see about 30 seconds of footage.

Anyway. Enough semantic squabbling and onto the more artistic side of things. This is where my unconditional defence of the epilogue ends. I already said it wasn't as terrible as I made out in my original analogy on this, partly because it was so inevitable that I'd already resigned myself to it happening about halfway through the end credits. I think if they didn't give people some sort of closure, saying 'yes, they do find each other in the next life, though you're going to have to fill in the blanks from there', they'd probably get more complaints than as it is. But that doesn't change the fact that on a purely artistic level it was wholly unnecessary. The real ending was good! Fading out at the end of final credits would have been perfect, a tragically happy ending that probably would've left half of us blubbering on the sofa (or computer chair. Whatever. And ok, maybe I exaggerate, it wasn't that sob-inducing. But still). Instead we get... this. One can't help but feel a little cheated.

Still, I'll admit that if they were going to do something like this they probably did it in the nicest way possible. They did at least restrict themselves to a quick Yuzuru/Kanade encounter, rather than doing something ridiculous like trying to orchestrate a meet-up of the entire main cast. No dialogue was good, gave it a greater sense of mystique (even if that mystique could never be enough to compensate for that last by having the epilogue in the first place). And the final fade-out was good - I must confess I liked how Otonashi's hand seemed to just miss Kanade's shoulder - makes us wonder if she didn't slip away again. Though I doubt it somehow.

And now that that unpleasantness is out of the way, my other thoughts...

I already mentioned how I don't feel the epilogue was at all inconsistent. However, what I will question on the consistency front is the timeline of this entire thing. How is it that Kanade was able to receive Otonashi's heart, live with its aid for a while, then die and still get into the afterlife before him? Does the God of this world grant express passes to moe young girls or something? Is the God of this world PEDOBEAR or something? Christ, no wonder Yuri wanted to lamp him one. Rah rah rant rant.

Sad that we didn't get to see a little more of TK before he went. Still, I suppose that's to be expected, minor - though very awesome - character, after all. Oh well, hopefully they'll give him his own miniseries or something at some point. (A man can dream...)

As with last episode, really noticed the soundtrack. I must say I think Angel Beats! has one of the best anime soundtracks I've heard - I don't usually notice expect for the intro and outro themes, but this one really worked.

A little disappointed not to have seen more of the guy who fell in love who was referred to last week. Unless we're meant to infer that was Otonashi? Nah, seems unlikely... though that would explain the timelag I noted a few paragraphs back, possibly...

Well, now that this series has ended, maybe I'll do a review! After exams, though...
