Worst ending to a manga ever! Well possibly not ever, but it wasn't satisfying at all. There's still a lot of things that could happen(Hikaru battling Akira's dad, Ogata, etc) and Hikaru didn't even achieve his goal.. Man why'd they have to introduce random characters? Why couldn't the author decide to show the future on others besides those two instead? It didn't even reveal who won Akira or Shindo in that tournament. -_- My rating of this manga was a 9.. but now it'll be a 6 because of the sucky ending. :P Still can't believe Hikaru didn't beat that Korean what's-his-face x.x... disappointing. :(

Indeed, this was the most unsatisfying ending in the history of all the manga I've read. I'm a university student and have LOADS of homework, exam preps and projects to work on, but I just can't concentrate if I don't complain.
Now, what on Earth happened? Did they run out of money for the series? I was at the volume 19 when I started asking myself: how are they going to make everything interesting in only 4 more volumes?. Answer?: they didn't!
I mean, for goodness' sake, this series was called "Hikaru no Go", not "let's all play go and have the series end up with this cheesy message in order for us to save face".
I am truly angry and disappointed. Honestly, if I were able to draw any better, I would create my own version of the ending, and possibly a dozen more volumes - but that would take too long, and by the time I'd be done, all the fans of this series would be dead from old age.
And I can't believe there's no sequel to this.
I'm angry, this series could have been really good.

Hikaru no Go deserved a better ending than this. I think the editors at Shonen Jump cut it too abruptly. They should've at least brought back Sai for the last chapter.

Im glad Sai didn't come back...but what the fuck.

The ending destroyed the very reason I have been reading this manga.
This manga has been making me read it, volumes at a time. The term page turner has a physical manifestation in this series...until the end.

The hand of god...wasn't reached.

The whole subplot about the Chinese player and his computer being the one to achieve the hand of god...dropped.

Im just kind of angry with this. I spent nights awake reading because it was compelling... to have it end like THIS?

Okay............. I completely understand everyone's frustration at the ending. I became obsessed with Hikaru no Go - it was a manga that brought me back into being an otaku when I kinda dropped out of the fandom. I would stay up late at night reading chapter after chapter and bought all the books. I love everything about this series.... except the ending.

But I still give Hikaru no Go a 10. Remember, this series is about Hikaru's journey - or "journeys" we all take, whether its with a sport, schooling, or life itself. I have found that Hikaru's journey to a Go player in this series has parallels with things going on in my life.

If Hikaru had won his match against ko yong ha, what would that have proved? nothing really. Hikaru's loses are realistic to what happens sometimes. I was rooting for him to win too, as I always was throughout the series, but losing is a part of the journey. and akira was right at the end when he said "this is just the beginning".

i really really wanted more than how this series ended. it couldve at least had an extra volume or 2. but this series could've gone on forever like other annoying shounen fighting series. its good that it ended. re-reading this in the future, i think, will give the reader a whole new experience. Sai not coming back also makes his "death" a much more emotional and realistic. anime has spoiled us into thinking characters are supposed to come back....

This ending seriously killed me. Mentally. I literally stared at the last page and kept on clicking on the next button, thinking, 'That's it? Really? REALLY? REEAAAALLY? Are you kidding me?'
And then I went and took a shower and tried to drown myself. Because this series could've been so much more.

@Duelistbluerose: I get your point, and I did think that afterwards- that it was more realistic and all- but storywise, it was a failure. There's a line between story and reality, and in this case, the author should've put more effort into making this ending feel satisfying. I mean, there are good, satisfying endings out there that are also bittersweet and realistic. I think a big reason for why this ending annoyed me so much was because there was no foreshadowing that it was the ending. It just read like a regular chapter that could've taken place in the middle of the series and then- smack, bam- it ends.

Sai didn't need to come back. Hikaru didn't need to win. He didn't even have to find God's Hand either (not that I was expecting him to). They just needed to have some better closure on his personal development and his rivalry with Akira. Ending the series at the end of a match, which he loses to some character who was just introduced a few chapters ago (and who we thus, don't care about that much) doesn't cut it, because it doesn't have that much emotional significance.

Sorry if I sound like I'm ranting, just thought I'd put my two cents here. Hikaru no Go's still one of my favorite series, but god does it have the most awful ending...

glad i read it online than buying the volume directly , i store every manga i had , but if it was for this ending , i burn all volume to dust , maybe i won't do it .. but that how i'm really disappointed and angry " can you here me" seriously the mangaka 45 old back than didn't have the ability to do a 1 or 2 arcs , man i'm why wasn't it like with GTO ,
introducing a few more characters ,touya trips from place to place n that thing with samsung tournament, and a lot more .. it was like a setup for something big and amazing coming , but hell no ,
thats way anime are better , an alternative ending sometime may work better, most bleach fans would be satisfied like me with the anime ending , i mean pretty satisfying and doesn't give that felling "what the fuck" what about that and that , and why .. who ......

the most awful ending ever.

Though the ending wasn't ideal, I suppose that kind of ending is supposed to make us feel as if to this day, Hikaru, Akira and all the other Go players are continuing their journey in Go which is a life-long pursuit. Still, I would have liked to see Sai, or the hand of God, or something like that as an ending. Not that i'm complaining (much).

I have to admit, at first I was mad the same way as most of the people here.
However, the more time passes, the more times are re-read Hikaru no Go, the more I grow to like this ending.
Just think about it. If you were not possessed with this manga, such an ending would not hurt that much. So, maybe this is a question of letting something go?
On the other hand there is no way, there still would not be any satisfying ending. Dragging this manga would be a sin in any case.
I agree that such an unresolved cut leave with the feeling that i is not finished yet, everything continues till this moment (but isn't that exactly IT?! something that makes us strive for more and as with no ther means we have to resort to our own imagination!). Also I have to admit that I still feels like there will be some continuance.
I wonder what is Obata-sensei doing right now. Hope we will see something good from him soon.

I totally agree. When I read this manga the first time through, I thought - "What's up with the ending? I want more! How could they end it like that!?"

However, rereading it years later and no longer a kid, I realised that the ending was beautiful on its own. There could have not been any better ending than this. We don't need to see them conquer the world - it is their growth that makes this manga so engrossing and also the tale of how a boy matures into a young man. This is the story of Hikaru's Go, and dragging the manga on beyond the Hokuto tournament would be pointless as it has already shown his growth - everyone knows that it is only a matter of time before he catches up with Akira and takes the world with storm - what more is there to show? It's a beautiful ending to one of the best manga I've ever read. Also, why would you care whether Hikaru or Akira won the match? They are going to have many, many more matches in the future as they're both pros. The result of this one match is not important.

The people complaining should re-read the manga when they are older and then they will be able to truly appreciate such an ending.

I've only read the manga once, and I appreciate the manga as a whole, but still I wanted more, I mean, things do not end there, there are so much left to be told.

Guys this is simply an extra chapters. It is NOT the last chapter of the manga! The last chapter was 189. The manga was suspended because of legal problem or protesting from Korean fans.

In any case the story-writer, Hotta Yumi, said she would not continue with the series and is fully contented with its ending. Overall it may have been just a little bit rushed, but I'm sure that's only a little tiny bit and going beoynd that point would be too much for our hearts.

Im still uncomfartabe with the ending not because they left all inconcluse (well in some part yes), but because a lot of characters didn't show up in the las episodes like Ogata and Kuwabara, i would like to see another match betwenn those two, also where is the Insei, what happend to everybody?, how many became a pro? or what happend with Akari and the Go club?, i'm fine with Hikaru lossing and not showing the results of the match with Akira, but where is everybody, i just need a chapter or two telling their stories

I'm so frustrated that it has ended like this, I mean seriously, the author could just put a little effort in it and end it how it should be ended. Meh

To frank, that's not the author's fault exactly. Hota Yumi (the author) was almost forced to end Hikaru no Go, as Obata Takeshi (the atrist) was assigned to Death Note.

I think the timing was appropriate, but I have so many issues with the ending! That totally felt like the mangaka just stopped the series. It was so abrupt and didn't have that "finale" feeling, really.

I definitely wish Hikaru at least played against some of the important supporting characters. It's fine if it doesn't show him reaching the top, simply because by that point the mangaka would probably find it hard to still make the series interesting without going over the top. But seriously, none of the major characters showed up and Hikaru even lost that final match. :L

I was going to give this manga a 10, because I thought the ending was going to perfectly wrap up the series, go out with a beautiful "bang", and deliver a wave of emotion but...
Th ending just fell flat for me. Now I have to give this manga a 8.5, which I will round up to a 9.
It was still a very good manga. Although I kept waiting and waiting for Sai to at least return a little bit at the end (perhaps in Hikaru's dream, or for them to meet again a short while for the final time to say a proper goodbye. Hikaru would be emotional but Sai could say something like "As long as you keep playing go, I will continue to be alive inside of you" or something cheesy like that. I love cheesy endings. This ending certainly wasn't cheesy enough for me, lol

I was also expecting more of Touya Akira finding about about the secret of "Sai" and how it seems to be connected to Hikaru. We never get to see further into Touya's thoughts. But I guess keeping it ambiguous is a good technique on its own too. Plus in a way, he did solve it. He got it right that Sai is Hikaru's "other self" basically, at least in terms of his go playing

But in a way, I do agree the ending was beautiful on it's own. It's a literal "slice-of-life", not the whole life, but simply a slice. Not everything has to end the cliche way I guess. You do have to wonder a lot of things for yourself and in a way, it sort of keeps us interested.

I agree that this was a pretty horrible ending. No closure on if anyone even comes close to the Hand of God or on any of the side characters' developing stories. You actually don't even know if Hikaru ever wins against Akira again or if he's ever going to catch up.

They kind of hint that Akira was the one was going to achieve the Hand of God and that Sai and Hikaru are only there to push Akira's growth. But without going deeper into it, we can never know for sure.
