"Just over halfway to its planned height, the Tokyo Sky Tree became the tallest structure in Japan on Monday when construction reached 338 meters (1,108 feet). When completed, it will stand 634 meters (2,080 feet).
The Sky Tree on Monday surpassed the city’s 333-meter (1,092-foot) Tokyo Tower, a landmark and top tourist attraction since it opened in 1958.
Both the Sky Tree and Tokyo tower are designed for television and radio transmission. The Sky Tree’s towering reach will enable transmission of digital signals well above skyscrapers that rise above 200 meters (600 feet) in Tokyo, according to the Sky Tree’s Web site." Discuss

Wait, what is "Sky Tree"? Is that building, named Sky Tree? It doesn't look anywhere to tree. They should just call it tower.

Japan is still retaining their analog signals until July 24, 2011, but it's good to see how the digital transition will be broadcasted to the masses. Apparently it won't be available for touring until 2012 though, what a shame.

The construction seems very well done; the architects are doing a splendid job.

I'd figure... they're being stylish by calling it a tree. And also, I'd reckon that Tokyo itself lacks trees... large ones anyways.

===

And now, if Tokyo builds one of these...

It's SimCity2000 for real.

1.That building is just for show and is practically worthless.(plumbing is probable crazy)
2.Tokyo tower was already named. So the tree name is kind of awkward other then your reason.

I don't care about high buildings, in Shanghai there are tons of skyscapers,
New York, California, Hong Kong, what is there to show off?
Oh, and I am not proud of my nation, having alot of skyscapers. Somehow, I find it common today...

If you call it tower wouldn't people get confused with the Tokyo tower? But I gotta agree, it doesn't look like a tree...and it's pretty ugly as well.

It's true. I have no idea, why they decided to build something so ugly in the middle of the city :/
It don't fit to the rest of the buildings, it's only make the city stranger :/

I don't know I just think that tower looks way too tall for the buildings around it, it doesn't really look like it belongs, let alone that the architectural style is very different from all the buildings around it, although it's a little hard to see in the picture. But at least it will get the job done.

Great, countries are trying to measure the size of their buildings now. How insecure of them. Men must be behind the construction of these things.

The Empire State Building sure as hell doesn't look like an Empire. It's just a name. I mean are you fucking serious?

An Empire doesn't really have a specific image associated with it so that example doesn't really make sense. Calling a building that doesn't look like a tree a tree, which already has a specific image that is associated with that word, is a completely different matter. Although I'm fine with the name because it does look a little like a tree, and I could care less whether it looks like what its name is.
