I'd like to know why. Did I somehow violate a rule?

Unfortunately, the review removal/edit function does not currently PM users about their reviews. Many reviews are reported on a daily basis, few of which are removed, but when I read tons of them every day, it's quite difficult to remember which one might be yours ^^; If I even removed it, that is.

So in a nutshell, I have no way of telling you why it was removed (if it was), without more information.

Based on that, I'd say the best thing is for you to post up your review here (if you saved it or have it) and get the mods to read it and tell you why it was removed.

Unfortunately, I haven't backed them up (I didn't expect this).

The reviews were harmless enough but a bit harsh on the anime/manga in question (no expletives were used). One review questioned the role the fan community makes on how popular anime movies are made and the other emphasized how overly-repetitive the story was in spite of the potential it had.

This is really a shame. And I can't even know why? I was being critical and people who disagreed with me wanted them removed (The only reason I can see).

Well, that's besides the point, isn't it? Reviews were removed without the review writer knowing why. At least send a personal message telling me how I messed up so I'll know what to avoid the next time, don't you think?

Actually i've seen negative reviews disappear quite a few times now. It seems that you're not allowed to be critical on this site. You remove someones reviews based on the requests of fanboys, even though the reviews do not break any rules, and you won't even tell the reviewer why.

I think MAL is highly at fault here and would appreciate if this issue was looked into (if it hasn't been already?) not only for the the_spectralcat's cause but because I believe in freedom of speech (corny as it may sound)

users should not have to back-up their lawful reviews

My guess would be that just over active fanbases have this problem. The smaller or less known the anime is, the more it is likely to slide having a negative review. But if you are indeed correct, that would explain why the higher rated anime has not negative reviews.

Reviews are never removed based on opinion; however, they will be removed for trolling.

People should back up anything they would like to keep that they put onto the internet. Shit happens.

I'm not surprised that even admins on this site are so unreasonable. Are you implying that critique = trolling? they are opposites. Besides, you admitted yourself that you do not know why the_spectralcat's reviews were deleted. Are you seriously trying to tell me that these reviews contained 'trolling'?

This is a big site with a large userbase. It's baffling that you don't give a shit about your users. Shit does happen, yes, but we should do what we can to prevent it from happening.

Please post examples of reviews you consider to be critiquing anime/manga that have been removed. Saying stuff like this without any proof or examples is counterproductive. For instance, I could say that no non-troll reviews have been removed and you can't prove me wrong.

It's not exactly easy to bring up examples of deleted reviews. I don't know, for all it's worth you may be deleting just as many 'positive' reviews as you are deleting 'negative' ones. But i find that highly unlikely, as criticism in the form of a negative review is often perceived as 'trolling'. I suspect this is the case.

All I know is that during the time I've been a member here, I've occasionally looked through the reviews of animes, only to revisit these sections later on and find that negative reviews I would otherwise have recognized are gone. I remember some negative reviews for Kimi ga nozomu eien and Clannad that I cannot find anymore. I cannot provide proof, obviously. This thread would be an adequate example if his reviews were saved, I suppose.

I'm simply against deleting reviews that need not be deleted. Maybe I'm overreacting, maybe this is a non-issue. But i'd appreciate it if you'd take this seriously :)

The thing is, we will take this very seriously. However if you are raising this issue based on "nothing", we are unable to help you and just be wasting our time.

Here's the deal; only a handful of people are able to delete reviews. The DB admins and Xinil. To be honest, we only have one active DB admin (there are some others, but they're hardly active) and Xinil doesn't really delete reviews unless they're being shoved under his face. Take also into account that people don't easily become DB admin, and you'll get the general assumption that DB admins are trustworthy and that reviews don't get deleted for no reason at all.

Of course that's an assumption. If you have reason to believe otherwise. If you can actually give us a proper example (even if it's hard to find one), we can look into the issue. As a general rule, reviews don't get deleted because they're "not mainstream" or just plain negative. Reviews are usually left alone in case of doubt. Reviews do get deleted for things like being in a foreign language, if they're not a review, if they're made before the series even started, has excessive vulgar language...things like that.

By the way, are you sure you didn't overlook the review you expected to see? Reviews do get sorted by rated usefulness and truncated in case there are too many reviews. Not saying you did of course, but it is a possibility. :)

It's also entirely possible that people are deleting their own reviews, maybe they got tired of other members hounding them for what is perceived as a negative review, sending them PMs or something. Maybe they changed their mind about their negative review or simply decided it was time to leave MAL and deleted all of their stuff.

It is of course possible that there have been some non-troll negative reviews that got deleted by admins but as you choose to believe it's the admins at fault, I choose to believe it's not and I will continue to believe so until proven otherwise. At that point, we will have something to take seriously. At this point, we don't.

There are currently 2 reviews for Kimi ga Nozomu Eien that have a score of 1 and 5 reviews for Clannad with a score of 4 or 5. How many negative reviews are we talking about that are missing?
