| Over the past week, many of you have probably noticed MAL's recent outages. As far as I can tell, these are directly related to the popularity and growth of the site. I'm very excited that we've grown to such a stage, but at the same time, a little sad that it means we're going to have some issues with our current server. Don't fret though, you can rest assured that I'm doing everything within my power to make sure we're up as much as possible. A new server is on the way soon, and I'll be implementing new methods to try to decrease server load during peak hours (11:30pm - 3:00pm PST seem to be the most active times). With that being said, please bear with MAL while its going through its puberty years. :D Thanks, and enjoy your community! |
| As long as you're on top of things, it's no big deal. Besides, MAL works brilliantly 90% of the time and this was to be expected with all the newbies to the site (such as myself). |

| I can imagine the MAL updater puts some stress on the server as well. Nice to see your upgrading things though. If you haven't already, look into caching some of the stuff on the site. For example the anime pages. You could export them to plain html every so many hours or once a day so theres less connections being made to mysql. I've done this to a few of my php/mysql driven sites in the past and noticed a major improvement in performance. |

Actually its quite the opposite. using the HTML list is more data sent than what the updaters use. The Linux version that I'm writting only ever updates the local copy if the program is restarted. which being a background process isn't often. the browsers however if your like most, get closed all the time, meaning more data and more server load. even the list we use to get our data I'm willing to bet uses less than what it takes to generate the HTML page. |

Active members (those who update more than once a month, maybe?) no idea. It'd be nice to get such stats from Xinil. I made a thread about it a few weeks ago and got no official response. :\ I'm curious how much bandwidth MAL uses, since I noticed my sig alone in march used over 500Mb (and it's 14Kb for the parts I host) so with the thousands of user pics, avatars, anime pics, club galleries and just raw page data, this site has gotta go through quite a lot of data. |

I suppose your right MAL updater only parses the currently watching list once and saves it locally right? Putting the MAL updater and other programs aside, caching and HTML exportation would help MAL allot. |

| Well I'm glad to hear that it's not just me. Our internet is pretty shitty sometimes since apparently all the wires in our house are corroded. So I was starting to worry it was our internet giving us problems again. |
