When does someone's opinion on anime actually matter?

People use “it’s just an opinion” as a shield to avoid deeper discussion. But I think intent, experience, and thoughtfulness do make a difference. Just saying “it’s just my opinion” doesn’t make it immune to criticism either.
So where’s the line?

A random person's opinion never matters on anime, not even reviewers. The only thing that matters is the production committee's opinion (investors and executives) and some creatives like directors and producers (in some cases). As for normal people, the collective opinion of people who take popularity polls sometimes matters because it's what determines what manga and anime stay or get cancelled like what shonen jump does. No other opinion ever matters.

Opinions matter as soon as they are shared, but most of them to a negligible extent.

depends on the degree of fanboyism, if someone looks obsessed for his fav anime, then his opinion is useless, for example @dragevard and @berriessan should not be trusted in any talk about mushoku, keep in mind that they can't even explain how mana and magic works, they are an embarrassment for their fanbase

I think ppl use the “it’s just an opinion” as a signal they want to express but not engage in questioning said worldview. Or when it’s a controversial opinion that some people tend to do more than just criticize and just outright throw insults. Whether opinions matter is a something that’s up to you to decide. It’s clear that they matter somewhat if you’re asking for peoples opinions on if opinions matter lol. I think the real question is if this person is being genuine in their thoughts or if they’re being disingenuous/hateful.

Opinions only matter when someone start going around trying to spread their opinion as some empirical fact.

Two prime examples of shit, that are factually wrong...

- Someone going around claiming a majority of Rumiko Takahashi's work as "Ecchi". lol

- Someone going around claiming localizing or even translating Nihongo to English is some objective process. lol

Shit that is can be easily debunked. The problem is some Users go around deliberately spreading misinformation, where they don't really give a fuck if they are right or wrong about something. It becomes obvious they only care to throw around some weird superiority complex so people probably see them as someone knowledgeable on the matter. lol

Usually I don't give a crap if a User goes around making wild fanboy shitty takes about shit and claim them to be some absolute truth, I tend not to even bother otherwise one could spend all day trying to correct petty shit all over the MAL forums. There was even a few times I actually caught myself spreading shitty takes on shit, but I don't usually go around claiming something as some fucking fact and start throwing direct insults or attacking others that don't accept them. So, I have come to realize it's best to no longer waste my time anymore and to just let Users just live in their fanboy bubbles. lol

At this point, as a hypothetical example, I wouldn't even give a shit anymore if someone started going around claiming shit like the Simpsons and South Park are now suddenly Japanese Anime. lol

But sometimes it's difficult to not speak out, specifically when those same Users start making personal attacks and throwing direct insults in the process (in the past 3 weeks I have been called a "motherfucker" several times and a "shill", by Users when they were completely unprovoked by me in the 1st place).

I think some opinions are more based and rationalized than others, but opinions are not really facts. You can present me your opinion, and show what facts you use, but I can take the opposite conclusion from you? So opinion Never matters, but it is Always cool to express and read them?
I am using this https://keydifferences.com/difference-between-fact-and-opinion.html . And there is a forbes article that says a lot of people have a hard time differentiating one from the other. And sometimes people send the opinion and facts mixed, because they are still building it. So opinion is not in its final state, and people try to use others into it.

Words for fuzzy concepts like few, a lot, most, some, low, mid, high, just devolve into its fact being debatable:
I see a million dollars as a lot, for Bill, a million dollars not so much.
I honestly dont think I and Bill will ever agree, but we can go as deep as finding out why we hold the different positions. But most of the times, the fact I make a million in 4 years and he in X hours is a fact that won't get told. And that is why, I would say "it is just an opinion (without its facts, and worthless)".

Something matters as soon as you choose to engage with it. Doesn't matter how you engage. You took the time to respond in some way. That's an admission of caring on some level. I could just leave complete nonsense here like I've done before in Dragevard threads, or I could give a serious answer like I am now. Either way, I made a deliberate choice to engage. I decided this mattered enough to actually type something even as I tell myself this is pointless. Now the extent of caring is a whole separate issue. I'm typing this, but I still know op is never going to read it.

The line is where folks who reply want it to be.

As for "it's only opinion", many people write it to avoid getting accused of malicious intent by emotionally unstable people who are extremely defensive about their favorite show, so even "I didn't like it, though I enjoyed the rest" can trigger them and successfully derail the discussion.

But it is just an opinion. It matters only when you choose to take action against it.

Everyone's opinion matters, and can be a great way to get a good feel as to the quality of said anime. It should never be the end-all be although when it comes to making that decision. Unless you're a robot. >.>

People don't use it as a "shield" lol, they use it to respectfully decline a long-drawn argument of opposite opinions which will ultimately never change the mindset of either side because people are free to have different ways of thinking.

Anyway, someone's opinion matters when they have seen the anime and not talking in bad faith/trolling. Regardless of how much I disagree with them, I'd respect their opinion.

Never, or maybe sometimes when I am reading its reviews, and the review is not just praising something to be the second coming of Jesus.

@SoumyaUkil73 Pretty much this. I have opinions about a hobby I enjoy and, sometimes, don't really feel the need to write essays about what aspects I like or don't like to impress upon a random who already has their mind made up. Of course, some people just like the sound of their own voice and look for arguments for no reason, too.

It's anime. It's not that difficult. 😅

Like many ppl have already pointed out, an opinion only really matters when it's expressed and someone engages with it. Just because someone likes or dislikes a show, that is still their opinion but it only becomes meaningful if they can explain why they like or dislike something, what works for them and what doesn’t

I'm not sure. If it's someone who is important to me (a close friend or my partner), then I will care what they think of the show. Because I'll want them to like what I like. We can talk about it and be like "Heck yeah, that part was awesome!" or we can be like "ughhh this show Sucked!"

If their opinion is different than mine, then I will enjoy being able to bicker with them about it and have fun trying to convince them to be on my side.

Other than that, I don't think other people's opinions matter too much.

People's opinions really don't matter unless they are the people producing the anime, or they are big YouTubers who influence the masses who dont think for themselves.
