@zombie_pegasus anime only exists either for a reward for the manga audience or a way to funnel anime viewers into buying source material. thats why there are rarely any anime that adapt the entire manga unless the manga is successful enough to warrant multiple seasons.
@zoomerReviewer That is true a lot of the time, but anime can also be successful in their own right, and showing off the bad parts of the manga isn't always the right call. You can portray the content as being better than it is in the anime and still get some more readers who don't mind the flaws of the manga.

Shows like Demon Slayer and Naruto would obviously not be produced the way they are if anime as a standalone product always loses money and is only useful as a way to promote a manga. Demon Slayer's manga is known to be garbage but a lot of the anime fans buy it anyway because they're curious about the inspiration for an anime that they love.

There's also some amount of people who actually enjoy ecchi and might not have heard about this series without the existence of the anime, so finding out that this wholesome anime was adapted from an ecchi manga could make them more interested in the source material than if it was adapted more wholesale. There's a lot of people who are surprised that Fate was originally an eroge.

If the goal is to show the wonders of minerals, the fanservice is unnecessary.

Nagi is not really goon-worthy anyway despite her large boobs.

The amount of people complaining about "anime tourists" and how they are a bad influence on the development of anime speaking as if the studios haven't been removing some steamy scenes and nudity from their adaptations for literal decades at this point, since way back when japan gave 0 fucks about what the west thought about their works, let alone some kind of pandering.

Makes you wonder who the real "tourists" are. (God, I hate using that word as some form of slang)

It's a shame but it is what it is. I think seeing what kind of panties Ruri wears would actually add something to the show.

@KanisterPaliwa She probably wears green panties. Just assuming since there's official art of the girls wearing bikinis.

@zombie_pegasus demon slayer proves my point. no anime made like that will ever be profitable if there isn't a motive to sell more of the source material and it worked considering how many hundreds of millions of people bought demon slayer manga. theres a reason no original anime will ever be released with both the volume and quality of demon slayer.

@zoomerReviewer Demon Slayer's anime is very clearly designed to make money as an anime, not just to promote the manga. They wouldn't release most of the series in theatres as well as on TV if they weren't trying to get more money out of the fans. It has been good at selling the manga, but fans go in knowing the anime is better and the manga is more of a curiosity. That shows the anime and manga don't have to be identical for the anime to work to promote the manga.

I thought we have all "signed an agreement" that shounen, seinen, shoujo, and josei are just demographies of the magazine and had nothing to do with the tone, element, and content of a series. x

Probably had to tone it down in order for the network to even air it. I am, however, really disappointed there's so many people here who would celebrate censorship. Shame on you tourists. Anime going mainstream was a mistake.

I mentioned this elsewhere but the manga artist at least in early chapters is terrible at drawing natural looking poses. I could see it warranted to tone it down because of how unnatural some looks but not entirely eliminate since there is nothing inherently sexual about panties showing to begin with and if toned down to look more natural not forced it would not be a distraction. So somewhere between would have been better.

I usually mind it, but not here. I absolutely think they were added in the manga to help with sales a bit, came out as forced and the anime is actually closer to the mangaka's vision than the manga is.

As multiple people in this thread have pointed out, the toning down of fanservice in anime adaptations has been going on for nearly 30 years; independent of the Western market and well before the recent anime boom in the West. Maybe worry about the real censorship that is happening all over Western nations rather than complaining about cartoons being less sexual.

@Jediknight54 i'm gonna blow your mind right now: multiple things can be bad at the same time 😲 has anime been less sexual compared to 80s, 90s? yes. obviously duh. even in '00s and early '10s you would still get a ton of heavy fanservice shows (i.e HOTD, maken-ki, triage x, freezing, seikon no qwaser, queen's blade, etc...). and hardly anybody complained about it. but the censorship of fanservice has only accelerated since becoming more popular in the west. even at Capcom and Bandai Namco their localization teams (ew) admit to essentially censoring more than just fanservice at the source. you're delusional if you don't think anime going mainstream hasn't led to more "modern audience" bullshit.

I don't really see the point watching anime with censored pantsu shots. In the good old days you'd count panty shots per minute and it was noteworthy for an anime to not have pantsu shots to exist. I want pantsu shots to get a renaissance.

Anime adaptations change and/or exclude stuff from manga/novels very often. Skipping dialogue, switching scenes, including characters earlier or later, and even changing story beats to fit with later revelations. Does every change count as censorship? Is it only censorship if sexy things are changed? Are pantyshots the ONLY worthless source of titillation to you?

Why couldn't you just say "I'm disappointed by the lack of pantyshots", instead of hiding behind a crusade against alleged "censorship"? It's okay to like fan service and want more of it. Trying to paint this as a righteous cause and accuse anyone that disagrees as "pro-censorship" is just sad. Not losing sleep over the lack of panties IS NOT the same as being pro censorship. People disagreeing with you, specifically, IS NOT the same as being pro censorship.

The only time I feel "censorship" hurts are shows like Futoku No Guild or Nukitashi the Animation, where the point of that it is titillation. Ruri Rocks isn't a show like that.
