The best part of this show is how the MC isn't involved in everything. These shows with overpowered or too strong MCs have the MC doing everything to a point where other people are unnecessary. This one is very good. Now if only they'd fix the spell names with numbers in it....

It’s simply boring. Up to episode 6, the main character only gets around 30% of the screen time. Who honestly cares about all those side characters? I get that it’s about world-building, but the main character should be in focus, and the world should be built from his perspective. I ended up skipping through the episodes because I just couldn’t care less about the meaningless stories of the other side characters. There’s no better way to ruin a story than this: the MAIN event, the “Dungeon Raid,” is happening — finally something besides endless chatter — and guess what? Ryo is reading in the library. Congratulations to the creators. This is a complete mess.

I’m about to drop this… the writing is so bad it’s almost unbearable. First off why are the court magicians info dumping to the guild leader stuff that they acknowledge beforehand that he already knows since they presumably already told him all this when they first arrived. If you’re going to be lazy and give exposition through talking to a character that already knows everything you’re saying, at least give us the courtesy of PRETENDING that the character doesn’t already know this. Or just show us their meeting for the first time… or here’s an even better idea, stop hiding the mc and bring him in as a potential adventurer who could join along on this extremely dangerous mission, then they can give us the exposition through a conversation with Ryo so we can learn these things along with Ryo who is just as unfamiliar with this world as we are.

There’s other examples of this through the show but it wasn’t this bad and it’s sort of par for the course with most mid tier anime, but this episode was especially egregious with it.

There’s actually another scene that is even worse in this episode, and it’s pretty much the worst written scene I’ve ever seen in an anime and what makes me want to drop it. The scene in question is after Ryo guides the messenger to Abel’s party and he leaves. Abel randomly tells everyone that they shouldn’t ever fight Ryo and then tells the same to the messenger, then goes on to tell the messenger how to find Ryo in case of emergency. This is “foreshadowing” but it’s so poorly done and obvious that I hesitate to call it that, it’s basically spoiling some future event that will have almost no impact on the audience because we were told previously that it would happen. And if none of this happens, Ryo doesn’t fight anyone from the party and the messenger never finds herself in need of help, then this is just wasted, pointless dialogue. So they have basically written this so poorly that no matter what scenario plays out, the audience will feel cheated. The worst version of Chekhovs gun I’ve ever seen…

This is also exacerbated by the fact that both Ryo and Abel’s party have both been shown as reasonable and not ones to look for a fight unprovoked. Abel’s warning only makes sense if Ryo is shown as someone who would randomly fight someone from the party. Or if someone from the party was shown to do something that might make them a target for Ryo. Neither has been shown so the already sloppy writing looks even worse since if you were to ask Abel if Ryo would ever pick a fight with someone Abel would almost certainly defend his friend and say that Ryo wouldn’t do that. But in this specific scene he’s the opposite, he’s almost mistrustful of Ryo and says they should surrender and Ryo will probably not harm them. Like wtf is this scene even supposed to do for the story…

Just absolutely atrocious.

Why would Abel tell his party to not pick a fight with Ryo? I didn't think his party would be the type to go to Ryo and try something like that?

Exactly. Ryo has never been shown as the type of character that would randomly fight someone. And so far Abel’s party hasn’t been shown to do that either. So this is completely unprompted dialogue that has no inciting incident and it makes an already clunky scene feel even more so.

It's funny how people whine that Ryo and other characters have lives of their own and the story doesn't center on one main character.

Plenty of people are fine with that, but you actually have to have writing that supports an ensemble cast of characters. So far the most “interesting” thing to happen is that for some reason the mage in Abel’s party is flip flopping between not believing Ryos power, then believes it, then is suspicious if it’s possible so she asks someone else that isn’t Ryo, then she’s uncertain again which is even more comical when you realize Ryo was literally in the room with her 20 seconds prior to her questioning this random water mage messenger. Hey, if you’re so damn curious about this amazing water magic that as you say “any mage would be curious about” then just ask Ryo, he’s probably just a few feet down the road by now. It’s just sort of ridiculous.

The only other semi interesting plot point is this new noble that was complicit in the cold blooded murder of 5 town guards who really didn’t do anything all that deserving of death. They were jerks to a woman and then were implied to have been stalking the noble for revenge but the writers never let either of these things go so far that we can actually tell if these guards are evil or if they are just jerks. If the noble is shown as anything other than the villain it will be very strange and hard to believe

@NinjaZix Technically, they knew who he was and if they hadn't planned revenge, they would be alive.
And as for the magician and her fellow party members, it is actually understandable for her and them, she for example studied magic all the time and got used to the system, and here comes a friend and fellow party member and says to completely oppose what she was taught and she did not see it with her own eyes, but just heard the stories, which for her sound at least as fairy tales, maximum as a deception. So it's understandable that the character believes and disbelieves, although I agree it's probably better written in the source material and it looks a bit comical in one episode.

@ShiroAlex just because they would be alive if they hadn’t followed him doesn’t mean their death was justified. All I’m asking for is that their deaths be made justified beforehand. If the noble is meant to be a good guy then show these people actually attacking and trying to kill him before he kills them. I have no idea if he’s supposed to be good or evil but i suspect he’s supposed to be at the very least not evil.

As for the magician, you just prove my point. At times she’s shown as very interested in this and at others shes not interested. This usually aligns with Ryo being absent and present respectively. If Ryo is out of reach she’s burning with curiosity but the second Ryo could answer these questions she’s perfectly content to leave the subject untouched. It’s just ridiculous for someone shown to be a curious scholar, but when a potential wealth of knowledge regarding unheard of and extremely powerful magic is mere feet away and she’s not the least bit interested in learning of it from the source. And yet is perfectly happy to ask random passers by their opinion on the matter. It’s bad characterization because her behavior makes us think she must be a different sort of special than is implied by the show

@NinjaZix Given his background and his pedigree, it's odd to expect him to spare them, he spare them once, the second time they pissed off, the one you can't piss off her and it's clear from the manga that the thugs in town know that.

Am I supposed to think it’s bad that the white brigade killed a bunch of rapists? They wanted to kidnap a very small looking woman and have her “service” them. They wanted to gangrape her. They then didn’t learn their lesson and came after the leader again. They can burn, fuck em. It doesn’t make him evil, just maybe a little over the top in his punishments.

I like worldbuilding, but man I wanna get into the meat of the story. It just seems like we’re constantly going in circles. Ryo still hasn’t told anyone about the potential world ending threat and other than going down into the dungeon today, what did this episode actually do?

We saw Shenna take out some guards(wtf) and met Natalie.. but the story is just moving wayyy too slow for a one cour anime. Even two cour I think it wouldn’t work because this is anime, not the LN so you need something to keep people hooked. The closest comp to this I think is Saihate no paladin, but that had more happening and frankly Will was a way more interesting MC.

The lack of communication from the MC and supporting characters is probably my biggest issue. No one tells each other what’s going on lol
@Marinate1016 I’m truly relieved to see other people are getting irritated over the direction this show has taken. It’s gone drone from relatively interesting to just plain boring. I literally had more fun ditch digging than watching the last 2-3 weeks of this show. Absolutely NOTHING has happened and the one tiny bit of action we did get had nothing to do with the main character. They have been teasing Ryo’s power to Abel’s group now for over 3 episodes. Now we head into week 7 of 12-13 and we might as well be starting from episode 1. Plus, wtf has happened to Ryo? He started out as this boy seeking power and the understanding of magic and now for multiple episodes he’s been a completely different person. Now he’s this Aloof d$&@head who’s most important desire is finding somewhere to eat?? I guess could have really summed this all up quickly by saying the both the writing and the shows direction have gone to complete crap.. You can get away with doing this with a show that has 24-26 episodes but not 12 or 13 like 95% of all anime these days. I guess I’m just mad that what I thought would turn out to be a good story and adventure has now blossomed into a dead fish.. just sucks. I really wanted this one to be good.

This could have been made in to 5 mins as an episode intriduction, this was just stretched out slop for the sake of taking screen time doing nothing, at least advance character relationships or smth. Well 2 episodes in a row that have been very weak, what a shame

why is the pacing in this anime acting like it has 50 more episodes to go???? the protagonist hasn't done anything since entering the town at all to further the series. it feels like he doesn't even exist sometimes
