A thread inspired by @CC and her lurker friend who described me as mischievous. What do you think the lurkers of MAL would generally think of you? Do you think it's positive or negative? Or maybe something closer to indifference? Answer below!

I honestly don't care. I don't have strong opinions of the people who are here let alone of those that never post. This place was once a vibrant community where people talked to, cared about one another. You'd open a thread just to see what user X or user Y had posted, and you'd reply to them with something silly of your own. There was friendship, discourse, edginess... some 20+ post long quote chain about immigration. Now there's literally nothing. What difference does the opinion of some lurker make? Nobody here engages on a deeper level with anyone anyway. It's just avatars, and usernames... and online personas, making silly one-liner posts in meaningless dumbass threads. At some point, people stopped even bothering to disagree with one another. The truth is, you guys don't care about anyone here. You probably don't even remember the last time you cared about anything at all. You can't convince me you care about "lurkers" all of a sudden.

@149597871 How far back is this old CD you're talking about? What is before or after Rule 7? We aren't supposed to make controversial threads; it's harder to create engagement, debates, or disagreement when a thread doesn't include any pinch of controversy. And whatever make a thread "controversial" often seems totally arbitrary (they locked my thread about organ donation, but never cared to moderate my dumb thread about masks). And I even got asked by a mod to stop making threads about ethics (even if they didn't touch on anything listed in Rule 7). I still make some now and then (and somehow never got any warning so far) but sure most of my threads will be more mundane and have less chance of creating discussion between users. I'd also like to add that I do care about some users but only to a limit. In the end, we are still nothing but strangers on the internet.

@fleurbleue It's not about controversy or rule 7. This place was fine for years after the rule was introduced and to this day, it's pretty poorly enforced. It's about being actually invested in the topics and the community. Like, when was the last time you made a thread and actually cared what people were going to reply? I don't think it's something unique to you, but the general feeling is that CD is becoming more and more like FG where people just log in to kill time and post a bunch of short stupid comments that aren't going to lead to any sort of deeper discourse or interpersonal relationship. That is why I don't think anyone genuinely cares about lurkers since no one even cares about fellow regulars in the first place. Also, the lack of controversy isn't because our mods are overworking but because people don't want to bother with serious discussions anymore.

Who are these elusive lurkers? Once they emerge from the shadows, we'll decide if their magnificent presence and precious opinions are worth a damn. Be they filthy satanic misfits or reasonably perverted ladies with a flair for tasteful blasphemy - I want to hear their voices. Until then, I refuse to judge the void, nor do I care for its judgment. Jesus said not to, and the man knew how to work a crowd. Amen.

Only replacement for the replacement for the replacement until I have become so overly socially burntout that I barely have the energy left to keep going and it takes me longer compared to when I was more into a person or conversation. The big issue in general however is the change of the quoting system. Ever since it has become more difficult to quote multiple people at once (not everyone even knows how to do it), engaging with multiple people has become rarer and thus the chances are slimer to get more engagement It's btw still far from true that no one cares at all. If you look around through the comments on profiles, you can see that people do check up sometimes if other people haven't been online in some while and there are also those who are sensitive to the topic of self-vanishing p.s.: I didn't have an iPad back then. | @149597871 Well, I do think that I care to some point, but sadly not enough to satisfy you, apparently. I know who the regulars are and do wonder what’s going on whenever one of them isn’t around much anymore (just like with @Commit_Crime right now). I do make threads in the hope that they will interest and entertain some of you, and I do think that I invest quite a bit of my free time to make CD a less boring place (whether this is working or not is up to interpretation). Sure, I don’t try to connect on a deeper level, but I never thought a subforum called Casual Discussion was actually the place intended for that. But I do love when any thread I make manages to create discussion between users in it (even if it’s a total mess with no deep meaning). But if you want better threads that are more intellectual, you should probably beg @auroraloose. |

@149597871 You're completely right and that's the internet in general these days. Sincerity and people being genuine was replaced with cynical irony and social games mirroring the real world a long time ago The smartphone killed the internet and now it's mostly just pointless gossiping drama, political grifting, and ragebait because now everyone takes the internet way too seriously since it's directly connected to the daily real life of normal people who'd honestly be way better off without it. I love the internet and how it lets me speak with people from all over the world with different cultures and values and allows me to learn about any subject and so on but not everyone is made to handle that, and I think it does more harm than good for the average citizen There is a reason old civilizations had a separate priest/shaman class while letting the average citizen overall go about their lives without having to worry about anything larger than what they'll eat for lunch

NS2D said: People threw a bunch of mean words at each other and got angry and eventually someone got banned and that was the end of it. Well, that's the thing. Those communities had actual human moderation. But even then, it was easy to trick the mods into letting problem users get off scot-free while banning the people getting rightfully mad at the problem users. Much like MAL does right now. There are creeps hitting on the female users here or constantly making misogynistic insults that never got punished.

@MelodyOfMemory Indeed. There will always be malicious people who try to take advantage of a system with human moderators but in general I prefer that over a fully automated one since a community where people discusses things need nuance. You can have a rule that says you're not allowed to post any spoilers for example, but what if a forum regular posts a spoiler within a spoiler tag in a response to someone that asked to be spoiled? That's where a human mod can do a better job than an automated one since the human mod will know from past experiences whether or not a user is malicious or not. Of course this is a very extreme example but I hope I'm getting the point across I've seen the types of insults you're referring to and even called it out in one thread where a mod deleted a lot of posts but not the ones that were straight up targeted harassment against another person, and they instead just pretty much said "you two always fight each other so we don't care anymore". And I get it but that could've probably been prevented if targeted harassment was pushed down on harder earlier before it escalated to that point. General hatred against groups of people? Meh, whatever, it's the internet. It's when it's against a specific user that it becomes a problem because not everyone grew up online and is used to it

I've never actually seen Beetlejuice; is there something about saying his name that summons him? I am wondering if I am MAL Beetlejuice. Also I have this weird notion that Betelgeuse is pronounced "baytl-geese," with a hard "g," rather than "beetlejuice," which is its actual pronunciation (well, actually it's more like "beetle-jews", but). If I keep saying it enough maybe it'll go supernova. I am sure that, from the perspective of the majority of the more-silent MAL lurkers, I am simply an occasion for tl;dr. But: The subtitle of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra is A Book for All and None; I like this a lot, because if you recall, my most recent MAL manifestation began with someone very ignorant and confused, but apparently sincere, talking about how he believed in solipsism because the universe is clearly awful. Naturally this person was immediately shat upon, with multiple people abusing their clearly serious education to score internet points from some poor confused fellow—even though he inadvertently hit upon a fairly unique and interesting formulation. I know there are lurkers who appreciate my strange interventions, because they message me and say so. fleurbleue said: I do make threads in the hope that they will interest and entertain some of you, and I do think that I invest quite a bit of my free time to make CD a less boring place (whether this is working or not is up to interpretation). As to this, I've always engaged with anime forums (I started out posting on the Crunchyroll forums around 2017) because, however stupid we all are on average, internet randos sometimes manage to say fascinating things, things even brilliant people might not come up with, and I love learning from people thus. I can learn from the randomness (which does not have to have deep meaning to be good or impressive), be kind to people who are honestly looking for answers I happen to have, and work out my own thoughts writing. To be fair, when I have questions myself I don't ask them here; this is a place for fun and randomness, not serious inquiry. So I'm probably not going to be much help making CD full of intellectual vigor; I just get annoyed sometimes. (Somebody needs to tell thewiru to stop.) That said, some of the things @traed was saying over on the ugly soul thread have made me want to talk about common misconceptions about fallacies, reason, debate, and whatnot, because it's obvious most people don't know what they're doing when they argue. It's just, it takes a lot of text to deconfuse people when the common opinion is so wrong.

Well. Allow me to present what happens when one lurks: Fuck off with this religious bullshit. I have very little tolerance for it. Atheism is not the denial of God's existence. Rather it is the acceptance that God does not fucking existence, you nimrods. What an intelligent and pleasant person. EDIT: I should say: When my posts say they're edited, it is always because I change some small formatting or grammatical thing. So here I got rid of the extra empty space between the quote and the next sentence. I dislike how MAL puts a newline after quotes, because when you type you often separate paragraphs with newlines, which means quotes have too many empty lines under them.
