MelodyOfMemory's post is pretty much most of the same grievances I have with anime discussion, but gupipy's statement about sexism in the community honestly hits me really close to home as there is general bigotry problems in the community and I have faced it myself both for being a woman and for being trans. Like I have actively gotten death threats from people for that and its insane. It feels like incel culture is just way too normalized in anime and gaming communities and it leads to shit like this.

Yeah, it is horrendous shit. Fortunately over time things should tend to get better in that aspect.

It(ecchi/fanservice) is not a deal breaker for me, but sometimes it can get a little annoying. If I want to watch nudity or straight up soft porn I would just search that in Google. I want a good story.

Then you do hold the opinion that a "good story" shouldn't have heavy sexual themes

@Captain-577 I never said that (this thing that you did is another thing that could be mentioned in this forum btw, putting words in people's mouth). We were talking about ecchi/fan service, not about shows that depict in an interesting way heavy sexual themes. I don't want someone's tits hanging out every 5 seconds or the MC groping women, that is annoying (even some shows I really like, such as Mushoku Tensei, have this problem and it annoys me, I still like the show). Fruits Basket is a show that tackles sexual themes and traumas in an amazing way and it integrates it deeply into its story. Wonder Egg Priority is another example of this.

You say I "put words in your mouth"
Then you repeat exactly what I pointed out

I feel like everyone should be allowed to enjoy what they want to watch, unless it's obviously criminal/illegal to watch it. What's super annoying is if someone comes and makes you feel bad or tries to guilt-trip you for watching a particular series/genre. I've seen it so many times it makes me just want to crawl into a hole.

My main grievances/pet peeves:

  • Gotta second all the "the woke west is killing anime" culture war winging and throwing around "tourist" crap. Especially paired with armchair translating and speaking for the whole of Japan without really knowing anything about it. Never leads to a productive conversation.
  • (Generally Unprompted) Bashing of things/genres. Especially if they never seen it and just parroting "It's mid/Trash/Overrated". Isekai sucks? Okay. Now say something new.
  • Episode forum specific: the people that keep coming back to say how Ass a show is over and over. We're like 8 episodes in, why are you still here??? Drop it and watch something you like.

There are a lot more of these "gems", but I can't remember all of them at once.

Remembered some more:

"They should have just made hentai instead"
"Why do you watch ecchi if you can just watch hentai?"
"The manga is better"
"Trainwreck of the season"
"She is such a -dere!"
"Fuck this cuckshit"

When they don’t discuss the anime, and instead, go straight to ad-hominems and name-calling lol

When certain people pretend like they got you all figured out and know you personally, and then proceed to prove otherwise when they jump to wild and way off the mark conclusions.

While not inherently annoying, it gets really old when trolls and ‘shitposters’ join any online discussion, just to stroke their egos. They disrupt the conversation with no meaningful input because they’re clearly just craving attention.

It's my opinion, most of them are just lonely, mediocre third-rate keyboard warriors, stuck living with their parents and effectively labeling them as basement dwellers, completely bored out of their minds. They’ve probably just finished some compulsive habit, like their daily gooning ritual, and are too mentally drained to contribute anything valuable to any conversation. So they end up spamming pointless brain farts on discussion boards, likely because their brains are too fried from constant, perpetual masturbation. Too drained to keep jerking off, they probably see this as another kind of high. lol

One of the ironies is that these trolls and ‘shitposters’ wouldn’t have the balls to act like this in a real-life discussion forum. They’d probably get humiliated, throw out of the place, and metaphorically eviscerated. lol

The dumbest thing I see in anime discussions is those who demonize the source material saying they loved the censorship. 2nd is easily "if you like fanservice go watch porn."

@BubblegumPatty First one definitely. Non-Japanese people trying to pass themselves off as if they're some experts on the country because they've done nothing besides consume (often with limited understanding) one facet of a country's culture is, ironically, the most tourist thing ever. 😂

It's hard for me to comment that, because I hold a high-bar for things to even be considered "the anime community" to begin with, and most things I would complain would be below that bar. (See Is "being an otaku" more about the mentality, watching a lot of anime rather coming as a consequence of that?)

By that logic, you could say that what annoys me the most would be "tourism", not knowing one's place: "Contrary to other mecha anime, this one is actually about the characters. Also, why couldn't this anime be set in college instead? This is lowkey problematic, I speak with the experience of having watched Solo Leveling and dubbed Boruto".

>InB4 "Am I above that bar?"
If you're using MAL forums, you're likely above that bar, yes.

Annoying things huh? Well what about random and sudden lust?
Casual Anime talks online are chill, yet the chill can die so damn fast when one person expresses their unhinged love and desire for a specific character.

I am cool with favoring certain characters in Anime, but going on about their massive chest or hourglass body just instantly tells you this person has different "priorities"

When they escape the anime talking about things and these are not even jokes. But that is never talking about the anime. Talking about the anime would be when they sound mad enough at the contents, or missed a reference to their point and we have to search for it.
I am way happier when the talk becomes something that both sides exchange information than when they are stoning themselves. And we can just notice where both interpretations are different, and we can find out where and why.

"Wow, you must have Stockholm syndrome/sunk cost fallacy if you like this long anime!"

Acting like complaining about fanservice ever means you're a woke prude tourist - I've been saying this strangely often recently but fanservice can be done poorly, just like any aspect of a story.

"Ew, yaoi!" then get out? If you can't handle watching a well-made story because it's about the relationship between two men, I can't help you. "Bonus points" if they fetishize yuri. (for the record, I'd also say the same thing with the words swapped if they didn't like yuri. If you don't like gay shows, then don't watch them.)

Person A: "I didn't care for [popular and/or critically acclaimed show] and here's why"
Person B: "Erm, is this ragebait?" or some other dismissive response

I'm not saying you're legally obligated to fight to the death to defend [show] but what's the point of going "erm, this is just ragebait, nobody respond", especially when dozens of people do it, giving Person A the attention they supposedly don't deserve? Just ignore it if it's so ragebait.

Actually, I guess this goes for any "I didn't care for [show]" post but especially ones that actually do try to clarify why they didn't like [show].

this is a broad issue i have when i talk to someone about anything that could be debatable...i HATE when someone tries to talk at me, instead of talk with me...when they completely ignore any input i may have in the "conversation" and once they've talked long enough to wear themselves out, or need to take a deep breath, or think about the next topic they wanna discuss, i now have an opening where i can bring up my own opinions on the topic(s) that were just covered...and within the first few moments of putting forth my own thoughts, i get interrupted and then have to listen to the other person talk about their own opinions again for the next 10+ minutes without having a chance to say anything.

^this is why i stopped having any kind of meaningful conversation with people irl...nobody knows how to have an actual conversation anymore...they just want to talk at me, instead of having an actual genuine, intelligent conversation with me.

What's there to discover? I knew that before the anime began airing, without having read a single chapter. It would be a bigger surprise if he were straight.

When someone blatantly spoils major events from a series or source material of a series I'm planning to watch but haven't yet started. Doesn't apply to all genres, I won't bat an eye if it's a romcom or other comedy, but for most other series, it's very annoying. Once I've started watching an anime however, I do my best to avoid discussions around it to avoid spoilers.

Also when people dismiss entire genres and themes as "mid", "shit" and "slop". Battle Shounen is the most common victim, followed by Isekai.

It's amazing how people will say shonen isn't that deep while dismissing anything complex and with depth even if it's obvious, and the fact that most isekai isn't deep doesn't mean there's no depth in any isekai, we have digimon

I can't believe that some people can't wrap their head around the fact that senseless nudity (that sometimes almost reaches soft porn) can indeed be a detriment to a story. A guy that replied earlier couldn't understand that and kept saying "So you hold the opinion that a 'good story' shouldn't have heavy sexual themes" which has nothing to do with fan service lol. A show can have heavy sexual themes (or scenes) involved and not have an ounce of fan service.

I think that I probably hate even more when they are "counter argumenting" what you are saying but it is actually just twisting your words and not understanding the point you were trying to make. They take an inexistent high ground in the conversation like they are winning the discussion when they never actually adressed what you said in the first place. I said earlier to a guy (in this forum btw) that fan service can be a detriment to a story (not that it inherently is) and he just replied that I didn't believe a good story could have "heavt sexual themes" lol. Firstly, those 2 things are nothing alike. Secondly, I didn't actually say that.

I hate especially when people say that in this platform. Like bro, you created an account in an online platform specialized to keep track (and ratings) of the animes you watch (and you have religiously done that for years), you have 1,000+ (and some 10,000+) forum posts in your profile and you even went to the trouble of entering into this forum and aswering... If someone takes this shit seriously it is you. There is a guy called "DesuMaiden" or smth like that that always answers like 2 or 3 times per forum and says shit like that. This counts for any type of hobby btw (any type of sports, movie or TV watching, gaming, etc.). It IS that deep, people just like to be assholes about it.

Sometimes people act like any anime that isn't a heavy seinen (or smth that is really directly trying to be thematically complex) can't have even an ounce of depth or caharcter writing lol.

Honestly as someone who listens to many creatives in many areas and is pretty creative, the vast majority of time it really is that deep, if someone puts something in a story 99% of the time it's on purpose

1. Calling anyone who criticizes an animanga a "tourist". It really doesn't mean shit.

2. "You're just not intelligent enough to understand" or "It's too complicated for you to understand". It's just a fancy way of saying "I don't know how to respond to this".

3. When someone brings up random shit about you to try dismissing your arguments, especially if it has nothing to do with the conversation. One time I was talking on a thread about a rather touchy topic in anime, and then some random troll came in and said "Dropped SAO but One Piece is your favorite". Like...what the hell does that have to do with anything I said? It didn't even relate at all.

@DarkFirefly72 I mean, MHA isn't the most complex masterpiece ever made, but at least half the criticisms could be fixed with one minute of analyzing the story
Bocchi the rock isn't a deep, thought provoking anime yet there absolutely is depth and love put into those characters and story
Digimon is a children's show yet to this day while I consume many anime that are considered the most complex and deep stories there are I still think it's some of the best writing I've ever seen and has tons of depth, I've watched tamers at least 3 times outside of childhood and every time I discover more depth, season one while not as thematically complex has tons of emotional depth and tackles topics that are extremely relatable for children without looking down on children

There are times people miss the point but not as much as some people claim, funnily I've seen people who claim this stuff missing the point as well
If you disagree with someone don't just claim they are stupid, show your claim and use the story to help solidify them, if you do it nicely if the person really missed the point they might be interested in hearing your interpretation at the very least, if they just hold a different opinion it can make an interesting conversation instead of insults

@Supersonic_Pain Ain't Ew Yaoi, and a possible Ew Fanservice in the same line? @Absurdo_N brought up a example where some of the threads popping that the Ew Yaoi sounds exactly like what you are complaining. Like this one https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2225913 .

It's a little frustrating when people wander into a long series or a franchise with a long history, or something made with fans of the franchise or genre in mind, just to complain about things that are fairly standard to said franchise or genre. I do think people suffer a bit from a condition that renders them unable to accept that not everything is made for them, and it shows up a lot in anime and games.

I completely understand if something that was for you starts to morph into something else, but I mean things like people showing up for GQX and then complaining that a main character kills people in space combat. Even Kira Yamato kills people, it's not even a spoiler!

When something isn't for me, I don't complain, I just wander off somewhere else.

Another hero? Oh, please!

What someone actually did that lol? It's Gundam, I would be disappointed if the MC didn't brutally murder someone.

Ain't Ew Yaoi, and a possible Ew Fanservice in the same line? Absurdo_N brought up a example where some of the threads popping that the Ew Yaoi sounds exactly like what you are complaining. Like this one https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=2225913 .

Not that it's the only show this has ever happened to but yeah, Hikaru was the main show I was thinking about when I wrote that

  1. Calling people tourists for not being pedos
  2. Telling people to kill themselves/sending death threats over opinions
  3. Complaining about anything "woke" (black people, LGBTQ+, women, etc) ruining anime
  4. Bitching about people who watch dubs

Yeah, I saw it a few times in episode discussions here and a lot on social media. I think GQX breeched into the general non-mecha watching population, being a Studio Khara (Hideaki Anno) project, so the audience was much larger than the typical Gundam watching crowd.

If you look through the thread for Episode 4 you can see some of these kinds of reactions along with people calling it boring or not understanding the plot (which I saw across threads for every episode). Granted, GQX is fast compared to a typical Gundam, but that's Hideaki Anno and the 12 episode standard these days.

Another hero? Oh, please!

Hahaha! If only he knew man, if only he knew. To his credit I guess he had some sort of context to what anime was. Certainly didn't think it was for children at the very least. XD

Tbh complaining about something like that isn't even annoying, is just straight up stupid. It is like saying that Legend of the Galactic Heroes gets too political or smth like that.

People love to throw the term "woke" as an excuse for being racist/homophobic/transphobic/sexist. They just don't want to acccept they are bad people lol. I always found so funny how some folks complained (for example) about Ellie being gay in the TLOU show and calling it woke when she was gay the entire time.

I saw someone complaining over High School DxD having fan service once, it is an ecchi anime and it is infamous for being very fan servicey yet someone would still choose to watch it and complain about it, why watch it then?

@DarkFirefly72 Exactly! And then they get really defensive whenever anyone tries to point that out (usually with the dumbest comebacks ever as well lol).

I have a couple.

"It would've been better if it didn't take itself so seriously."
"Good Idea, bad execution."
"this show is comedy that shits on the genre"
"your supposed to turn your brain off"
"this show is trash, no need to think about it further, just gawk at it and make fun of it"

Basically all of this, but I would also add people complaining about piracy.

Most recently is the overuse of the word peak.

An episode of an anime is better than usual? Peak. Something cute in my yuri anime just happened? Peak.

Now I could be wrong that those people do genuinely think every single little thing they watch is indeed peak, but I just find it hard to believe.

@Technopunk Forgot about that one. There's also the people complaining about people who legally stream or buy DVDs and Blu-rays (sounds weird but I've been seeing more and more of it on Twitter lately).
