English (native). I have a good degree of fluency in Japanese because it's what I studied in university (though I'm slightly out of practice nowadays). I know a little Mandarin but it's very broken. But I would like to improve on it.

I used to know how to speak Thai as a kid since my mother is Thai. But after my parent's divorced and I lived with my dad, I forgot everything except how to count.

@floating_lily I've read The History of Sexuality, Discipline and Punish, and parts of The Foucault Reader, and I'm working on The Archaeology of Knowledge right now. I love how expert he is at employing historical analyses, how deft his writing is, and how his theory of what it means to be enlightened is basically to be like Foucault. I found a YouTube video of an interview with Foucault, and his voice is deep and impressive.

Applying to medical school with pretty strong stats. But I've worked in healthcare for a couple of years so I've learned the importance of Spanish.

I feel like medical school is more safe than law school. Only lawyers who make it into a T-10 law school generally earn 200k+. For doctors, the salary doesn't seem to change based on school prestige.

As for undergrad, I spent most of my free time studying, volunteering, and working. Compared to Pre-Law students, I had a worse life-school balance as the course load was much more demanding. So law school is definitely better if you want to have fun.

Also take into account law school is 3 years and medical school is 4 years, 3-4 years of residency, and 1-2 years of fellowship. Soooo you'll basically be a student till your 30. Although, both require you to constantly study for exam well off into the career.

Well if you want to better communicate with your family member then learning some of it is surely worth it! I won't do any discouraging even if Polish is not the easiest language to master.

Let's see

- Chinese. Fluent in Mandarin, closer-to-mid-level fluency in Gan (essentially Hakka with different vowels and tones; thanks, Dad and Grandma!), low-level fluency with several southern Chinese dialects, some of them are common in Southeast Asia, like Hokkien (common among Southeast Asian countries), Shanghaiese, and Cantonese.
- Quebecois French. Due to my English language education, I'm completely illiterate in standardized French.
- English. General North American like an old school evening news anchor. I could have gone to a French language elementary school, but it was so far away.
- Korean. My official 2nd language and I switched to using the pronunciation closer to North Korean standard speech because I don't want to sound like a dead person. For anyone who don't know, Standard Korean spoken by South Koreans doesn't generally have a strong presence of intonations, so the speakers sound like they are always out of breath or running a marathon. And I don't want to be friendly towards South Korean men, so speaking like a North Korean is more than OK to me.
- Japanese, closer-to-mid-level fluency but only for reading. Just accidentally being capable of reading Japanese slowly as the Japanese writing system is "Chinese with 2 native writing systems with most of the Korean grammar".
- Russian, closer-to-mid-level fluency but only for reading. Reading Russian is easier than listening for me these days. My other grandfather was a Russian language instructor and a freelancing interpreter for the police.
- German, now low-level fluency. My French-Canadian grandmother (now can't talk due to old age) was fluent in German as she used to be a working mother who served as an assistant secretary for a German company in Quebec.
- Tagalog, now currently tourist-level beginner level. Long story when I was in university.

and bullshitting my fluent language skills

I overloaded attempting to learn languages and lost the skills I developed as result. I tried all at once French, German, and Norwegian and little bit of Irish, Welsh, Estonian, Russian, Japanese, Turkish ...and I cant even remember what else. Only language I've actually used outside English is Spanish but I have trouble remembering it due to words sometimes being too similar to English which ironically makes them harder for me to remember and being spoken faster I don't like too much. Though I am tempted by Silbo Gomero being a thing. Also considered learning some conlangs. I overdid it lol I for a while was able to make sentences in the three languages i listed but my vocabulary too small to have any conversation or read which contributed to me forgetting most everything. Also I get hung up on wanting to get accents right which is hard to do yourself. I don't know what I want to do anymore. Maybe if I judt immerse myself enough id naturally pick up a language but difficult to shut off that English speaking part of my brain.

Is everyone who speaks Nahuatl also a Spanish speaker or are there some people who only know that? If the speakers are bilingual how do people use it? Is it a family and friend thing or do even strangers get greeted in it or what?

Fluent/Native-speaker - Polish
Could be fluent due to it being my national language if I would relearn - French

Non fluent - B2 - English, could do better but that's enough for me, I can speak freely with anyone abroad, write or read majority of texts, that's enough for me.

All other attempted languages, which I might still try to continue or not:
Chinese
Japanese
German
Classical Latin

Only German (native) and English (B2, could maybe go for C1) really when it comes to speaking and text production, as those are the main languages I've been using. My Romanian (other native language) is on the level of a small child. I can read a bit but not really write in it. Otherwise, my French was on B1 but it's probably A2 now, Spanish also around that level. I can comprehend some potentially less-known words based on their familarity/context, but that's it. While I did formally study Japanese studies for like 1-2 semesters, most of my vocabulary is still from Anime and other modern Japanese media.
I'm lacking the motivation and incentive to learn other languages, because I get by mostly with just German and English. The only reason why I had picked Spanish as 3rd foreign language in high school was so that Physics wouldn't count as a main subject, it's pretty much useless for my daily life

@floating_lily I'm not sure I've ever thought about who my favorite author is; that's an interesting question. I'd probably have to rank Foucault pretty high, but I think I might put Terry Eagleton (an English literary critic) and Thomas Schelling (who won the Nobel Prize in Economics for bringing game theory into nuclear strategy) at the same level.

Just 2. Spanish is my native, so it doesn't count, and English doesn't count either because it's mandatory to learn it in school in my country. So, besides that, i'm fluent in Italian and decent in Greek (modern).

I really want to learn Chinese tho, i just don't know where to start (˶˃⤙˂˶)
