Call me crazy if you want; but I'm trying to define clearly what a loli is. So far I have found only two threads relating to today's topic (see at the bottom). Here is the idea: let's try by seeing the blur with questions that come out regularly.

First, we need to determine the age of the loli. I think everyone would agree on the 4-9 year old gap. Before, you're not a child but a baby. After, you're in the 10-12 prebuscent age (most people seem to agree on this one), then the early teen age 13-15, the late teen age 16-19 or the adult 18+ age. When you actually have a 20+ year old who looks like a loli, let's say you're a normal human between 20 and 100. Then you fall back into loli fetish.

Secondly, the physical appearance, even if the loli does not posses a physical body, you still can see its physical appearance in anime. I've included the flat chest (I'm against the Oppai Loli trend) and the small height.

Finally, to me, a loli is a childish girl, not a shota, nor a metamorphing creature switching between adult state and girl state.

According to all of this, I've put arbitrary values on each criteria on this example:

Note: for the "girl power" criteria, I've taken into account the fact of being a female, a male or androgynous with also this "girl power" definition:

In the context of fashion, “girl power” targets, among others, pre-teens, teens and “adults”; the accessories of this fashion are in particular: jewel or piercing in the navel, blue jeans "low waist", thong, mini-skirt and any type of clothing revealing more the body.

How much would you have scored on famous lolis? Illyasviel von Einzbern, Shinobu, Chino Kafuu, Renge, etc?
Feel free to rate any flat-chested character, changing shape, shota or even more.
Also, feel free to criticize this rating system. The main goal of this thread is to collect opinions.

What defines a loli is their physical appearance alone. That usually just ends the argument.

I’d say any character that looks like a small child is considered a loli, even characters like this who in reality are adults

As previous comments have stated already, physical appearance is what determines a loli. If it looks like an underaged child, it's a loli.

Could we please not revive this argument? So many threads have been made on this already and it goes nowhere.

Loli is judged by height for the most part not age or bust size.

Similar to what people are saying, regardless of true age people usually determine from looks.

Is this just a shameful attempt to justify loli fetish in disguise?

The only objective way to resolve this is to look to popular media itself and not just have internal discussions amongst fans.

We should be descriptivist not prescriptivist.

I find more often than not you see 'lolicon' used to accuse an older male, than you see 'loli' used to describe a younger female, in terms of anime examples.

We usually don't get explanations, just examples, so we can compare commonalities of the example.

The earliest explanation in anime is from Cherry in Urusei Yatsura episode 16a/32 あゝ個人教授! (Oh! Lone Teacher) an anime-original not adapted from the manga.

ロリータ・コンプレックス、通称ロリコン
[roriita konpurekkusu tsuusyou rorikon]
Lolita complex, commonly known as "loli-com" [rorikon]

美少女を恋してしまうミドルエイジの心の病
[bishoujyo wo koishite shimau midoru eiji no kokoro no yamai]
Middle-aged mental illness that makes people fall in love with beautiful girls

Loli simply means "bishoujo" - a beautiful adolescent young woman.

Any subsequent applications where it is used to apply to pre-pubescent little girls, toddlers, babies, these are all incorrect.

Women who are adults but appear adolescent are sometimes called "lolibaba".

We see both examples in the recent anime Shield Hero - when Raphtalia is first adopted and appears as a prepubescent little girl, people do not pay sexual attention to her and Naofumi does not scold anyone for helping her.

When Raphtalia levels up and undergoes puberty, Naofumi scolds the men being nice to her as "lolicon" -because she is a genuine mid-adolescent young woman and middle-aged men are simping for her.

Later on when Naofumi meets Kizuna Kazayama he refers to her as "lolibaba" - she appears to be an adolescent young woman like Raphtalia, yet is actually 18 (older than Raphtalia) therefore he uses the portmanteau.

Lolibabas are sometimes just called 'lolis' though since the term is not well known. The creator of One Punch Man called Tatsumaki a loli, the creators of Edgerunners called Rebecca a loli - both are adult women in their twenties so they'd be "Lolibaba" in the technical sense (like Kizuna in shield hero) so we can see lolibabas as being subsets of the loli umbrella when judging it on the basis of APPEARING to be an adolescent young woman, even if one genuinely.

That's how it works for Chii in Chobits after all - she is not a genuine adolescent young woman, she is a gynoid who resembles one.

Prepubescent body proportions, nearly always flat-chested, but oppai loli also exist.

Age is entirely irrelevant, and so is behavior.

@Zarutaku this neologism 'oppai loli' is meant to refer to giant double-D mega-milkers, it isn't meant to imply that lolis need to normally be flat-chested

All early examples of men being called 'lolicons' if you look to the adolescent young women they're ogling - they all have busts.

Clarisse in Luipn, Lum in Urusei, Noriko in Nube - all three have at least B-cup breasts.

If anything it is flatchested lolis who are the outliers of loli - lolis by default I believe are expected to have already undergone thelarche.

Completely pre-pubescent surfboards like Heidi of the Alps are not loli at all.

Lolis are "shoujo" (beautiful young women).

Flat bodies like Tanya in Youjo Senki are not loli - that is why she is never called a loli in the show - that is why Tanya is calleds a 'youjo' instead of a 'shoujo'.

@YJB Makes sense, but most people still associate them with a flat chest, so early puberty body proportions would be a reasonable compromise.
