I find this episode kinda funny, especially from Kanna's prespective and the moments she's had.

As regarding the mystery, this had a less ominous tone compared to the previous but still triggered by the usual 'rumors'. Only one episode left and seems the show did just have these monster of the week type all along.

Everyone's having a good time, but we all know this is the "calm before the storm" episode.

The task given to Kanna by Chuuzenji might be a mystery for now but I'm already assuming that Soichiro will be implicated in the final case, and that's because his hands were shown to be injured and bandaged in this episode.

Does anyone know of an anime that deals with post war Japan as a slice of life show?

They keep hinting on stuff but not showing how folks endured.

Kanna's punishment to clear Chuzenji's pile of books, and then cheat her way to his cookies by helping to make tea, the conversation between student and teacher is quite subtle, though he notices that she has been eyeing his cookie box...which turned out to be just a pencil box, it's quite the harsh tease though, I've gotta admit I laughed out for that banter. Enokida coming in thereafter with a better treat, Kanna gets her treat, and Chuzenji...hides his cookies in a separately stashed paper bag (as expected).

Kanna going to Enokida's place, and then getting awfully lost at the size of his mansion before both Chuzenji and Inspector Kida comes along, as well as other people...for sweet potato gathering. And on the other end, there's Soichiro with Imagawa and Kawada, though that leads to another part of the house, seeing the brash guys of Kiba and Enokida duke it out for the nth time. Plus Atsuko and the others, and the ladies get the sweet potatoes done and wrapped for the occasion.

It's a good time of a common feast for all, though what will the finale bring, is anyone's guess of what Chuzenji will advise to Kanna.

Such a bitter betrayal, that Chuuzenji would deny Kanna some cookies is the worst!

@pixelante And yet, this was also quite possibly the most Chuuzenji thing ever.

Little SoL episode this week. Should get a nice big mystery to finish things off next time. It's been a fun ride.

@Briekimchi it has been a pretty good SoL and if it was on it's own I'm sure it'd have been more popular. But it was competing with Zatsu Tabi, Mono, and Food for the Soul in the cozy CGDCT category and those are all much more polished.

@pixelante It's probably a bit too light-hearted and easy-going considering that post-war Japan is not the most accessible setting for viewers. In the earlier Monday timeslot, Zatsu-Tabi has got the same laidback approach and slow-pacing but is definitely more obviously appealing for casual viewing.

I think Chuuzenji has been the better show, but I can understand why more people aren't watching it.

@Briekimchi indeed I think asides from Reijirou mentioning he was a naval officer during the war this is the first time they've indirectly referenced the bombing of Tokyo. Maybe if the setting was more 1950s it would have been received better?

well that was a totally chill slice-of-life, hangin out with all the adults, roastin some sweet taters, eatin some flan with ice cream and fruit parfaits, Akihiko boondoggles Kanna concerning the contents of a tin labeled... coooookies! ;> annnd we get to see the incredibly lavish and freakishly enormous traditional Japanese nobility 'in the town' estate of the Enokizu family... episode...

just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

I enjoyed the laid-back vibe of this episode, but I didn't really get the point; it felt like a season finale, but it isn't, and there also wasn't any plot. Very mid.

@teraphIl1000
The point was setting up the stage and the actors for the finale.

@Avvenirista It did a bad job of it, then. I'm a fan of mystery series and this felt like a bottle episode without a plot.

What do you do mean a ''bad job at it'' when you don't even know what the final case will be about?

Wait for today's episode to air before passing judgement.

@Avvenirista Is this your first time watching a mystery series?

To properly set up the stage in this episode for the next one, the episode would've had to:

  1. Establish a mystery (in Detective Conan or Kindaichi, it's usually a murder in the OP episode, but here it would be a "paranormal" happening).
  2. Plant clues and red herrings so the viewers can already start working on resolving the mystery by themselves.
  3. Weave in character-driven suspense (misdirects, potential guilt, etc.). This might have been what they were trying to do with the little scuffle and flashback + the shy guy who seems to like the friend of Chuuzenji-sensei's wife, but since there wasn't a mystery for the viewer to work on, we can't even tell. Again: this is sloppy writing.
  4. Theme.
  5. Foreshadowing.
  6. End with a hook. This is the only criteria that we can tell was definitely respected.

I reiterate my point: this episode felt adrift as a penultimate installment of the show and I thought it could've done with some better writing.

Now, if you enjoyed it, that's great (I myself liked the chill vibe)! However, that doesn't negate the fact that it wasn't well-written.

No, this not the first time I watched a mystery series and what you've listed is just the by the book approach to setting up a mystery. You should be aware that there are other ways to achieve the same.

The actors and stage were set (not in the most impressive and complete way, I won't refute that) so now the final casual case can commence, that's simply it!

You know what, I take back what I said in these last few posts.

The final case turned out to be something completely different from what I expected (mystery about and around the Enokizu's mansion) so the second to last episode was really nothing more than a slow relaxing episode.
