Have you ever watched a great anime that you felt was made without passion?

I was talking about this with a friend of mine a couple of days ago and the thing is that we basically couldn't really come up with a an answer. There are a couple of animes that I think have no passion behind them but I consider all of them to be pretty bad. Any anime that I've given a 7 or above has imo at least some passion behind it, like it really seems that the author put its heart and soul on that particular project (at least to some degree). The thing is that I've watched considerably less live action TV shows, but it is much easier to name several examples from that medium (actually good shows that don't feel personal in any kind of level). So I was thinking that maybe it is a medium thing, where animes/mangas are a more personal way of creating things or they make the products to be more creative and to take more passion and imagination but what do you all think?

I find One Piece great, but lots of One Piece episodes felt like they were made with a lack passion, hopefully the remake will do better.

I gave Only Yesterday a 1 because I felt it was made with the most bare basic milqetoast off feeling half assed sentiment I could ever feel in my life. I like "boring adult films" too, by the way. Only Yesterday feels like it was very resigned to be "okay with mediocrity" and ran with it on the bus that showed up at the end of the movie.

The most puzzling thing about this movie is that it has everything that I would like about it. It's a slice of life movie, for one. It has a window into 1960s Japan, while in a present day of the 1980s. It has all of the Studio Ghibli hallmarks: nature, farming, tradition, even some commentary on consumerism and environmentalism.

It doesn't need to be super flashy or dramatic to get my attention. I value the Buddhist adage of "valuing and even seeing the magic of the ordinary", to emphasize. I probably hate it for how it's trying to portray "normal life", when nothing is that uneventful even if life is not as action packed or filled with events like in more dramatic and conflict filled stories. There's also something of a smugness to its "anti-passion" nature of it.

No. Lack of passion does not equal greatness, ever.

If a series can resonate with me to enjoy it, I generally think passion was put into its creation. I have fell out of anime for losing soul like Pokémon and Yokai Watch.

It's almost impossible for me to separate "greatness" and "passion." Passion doesn't always yield great anime, but I can't imagine any great anime made without passion.

The only one that I somehow enjoyed, but that feels that way (but technically is good) is Kabaneri from Iron Fortress. Anyway it's somewhere 6-7/10 anime for me maximum, not great at all.

The Yu-Gi-Oh! anime rides on passion but after 5D's something felt off, like the animators and writers didn't want to be there anymore.

I would say the same thing for any modern Digimon show like 2020, Ghost Game, or any of the movies since Tri, they just feel soulless.

Tower of God is another one that just feels like nothing. You watch it and you forget it the next day.

Probably a show like post season 3 The Walking Dead. La Casa de Papel, Stranger Things and other shows of that caliber (a lot of other examples probably but I don't exctly remember more right now). They are good watches (even great watches at some points) but I can't really feel an ounce of true passion in those works. Like maybe it is bias towards anime or smth like that (I don't think I have a bias towards any medium in particular but it could be) but I feel like there aren't really that many animes where that happens. I know you could mention basic battle shonens or other oversaturated genres but again, I'm talking about actually good shows, not 5 or 6/10 generic TV shows.

No I don't think so, whenever you come across a great something, it has passion and care put into it.

Dark gathering, you'd think considering the kind of source material it would look much much better than it did pero~

This question makes zero sense. No way I'd ever call a soulless series that had zero care or love poured into it great or even recommend it to others.

Hmm I still can't say I've had that kind of experience...

I've only seen Stranger Things, and I thought Season 1 was genuinely a good watch and made with passion, even if it was heavy on nostalgia. Season 2 started to feel a little contrived and running out of ideas, which simply made it less great in my eyes.

I do remember now that I have enjoyed some long-running series even when they started going downhill, purely because I loved the earlier seasons so much. Like The Office or Game of Thrones. Can't say it's happened with anime yet.

But even when I do enjoy those later seasons, I won't say that they're great...

Off the top of my head, Fractale - had a lot of good ideas but felt kinda soulless.

Anime with high budget done by big name studio from popular source material but in the end it's an lifeless final product like
solo leveling that just look incredible but there’s no passion behind the work, it’s like staring at a stunning replica. impressive animation, but utterly forgettable scenes.
