Impact should always be the most important aspect when rating an anime

Of course impact can mean different things to different people but I believe that is what everything boils down to at the end of the day. I personally believe that the emotional impact a show can create on me (how able it is able to convey emotions on my person) is the most important part of a story. It doesn't matter if it is a comedy, a heavy drama, a thought-provoking seinen, a simple battle shonen or whatever, the really important thing is the impact it left in you (a comedy should constantly convey joy on you, a drama should make you constantly feel a wide range of deep emotions, etc.) A show can be masterfully constructed, have amazing characters and a well thought story but if it doesn't have any emotional impact on you it doesn't really matter. What shows are you going to be thinking about in a couple of years? That is why I think it is kind of dumb when people diminish shows like Demon Slayer (this doesn't have anything to do with the anime awards, I definitely thought Frieren should have won). DS doesn't have an amazing story or characters with a lot of depth. It still manages to convey incredibly raw emotions on people. It still puts in front of you a unique experience that you will not have with any other anime (mainly because of Ufotable of course). For example, I think Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhoodis an amazing anime, it makes me feel nothing. Ironically enough, even though FMAB is a far greater story with much better characters than something like Demon Slayer or Solo Leveling I will think in the following years about the latter 2 much more than about FMAB.

I used to think that impact was the most important, but I feel like resonance between my mood and the genre is my top most criteria. Among others... I watch better SoF / Comedy shows when I need to chill, Action shows when I want to see bad-ass moves or Romance when I need flirty stuff.

Of course, impact will give you the strength of your rating, but this can be a trap. Some shows have little to no impact, but they are true beauties in story, visuals or music. Aesthetics play also a lot for me in my ratings.

Also, I'm not sure I can judge impact precisely after a first watch. Sometimes, I think about some shows I watched months or years ago, never doubting it left such an impression. These are exceptions of course.

Rating anime is waste of time, just like voting for Crunchyroll awards.
It's a popularity contest based on Twitter trends and YouTubers opinions

I think once you're talking about the higher end of your personal rating scale then impact/connection is probably what's going to get a title up there. If someone just does everything right but isn't resonating with you in a some way that other shows don't (ie. impact) then you're probably going to give it an 8/10 and not think too much else about it.

So does that make it the most important aspect to consider? Possibly.

Enjoyment comes from a mix of different factors, it doesn't come out of thin air. I didn't like Demon Slayer and Solo Leveling because I didn't enjoy them, not because they weren't deep or thought provoking: maybe being a bit more deep or thought provoking could have helped but it isn't mandatory, there are different ways to be good.

Yes, but impact is something that many viewers often aren't aware of right afterwards when they rate the title.

The more often someone remembers it in the future, the more aware they become of the impact it left on them.

It's impossible to judge that right away though. There's plenty of anime which I rated 8+ due to my enjoyment at the time, yet I don't think of all these series as having a long-lasting impact on me.

Although I'm probably more generous with ratings than most, so that likely has an effect.

I generally agree. The way an anime makes me feel or think and how it stays in my mind even after watching it is probably the most important thing I consider in my ratings. If a show is nice but forgettable and doesn't have any impact on me, I'm not going to rate it very high.
There have been cases where I adjusted my scores of anime some months after watching them, because I didn't actually care as much about them as I initially thought.

But I don't think impact is only something positive: If an anime makes me feel contradictory to what it signals me to feel, if it makes me disgusted or angry in a way that's not justified by the story or if the anime only stays in my mind as a bad example, then that's definitely not the kind of impact I give a good rating to.
In some sense Frieren had a bigger impact on me than Solo Leveling or Demon Slayer, but that's primarily because of how drastically Frieren differed from my own expectations as a fantasy nerd and how passionately I disliked it. If the question is which anime I felt more connected to it's definitely the other two shows.

For me, the most important thing is: do I enjoy it? Do I have fun? Whether it’s something that makes me laugh or gets me thinking, as long as it entertains me, that’s what matters.
I’ve already experienced so many different mediums—anime, cartoons, movie.

At this point, scores don’t matter to me anymore. If I’m having a good time, that’s all that really counts.

And this why I don't rate any entertainment.

I think most people already do this... what resonates with them gets rated high.

But you're kind of leaving out slice-of-life/CGDCT anime. A lot of them are beloved specifically for not being emotionally impactful and just being easy and comfy.

You could argue the feeling of "moe" or comfyness in something like Yuru Camp still counts as emotional impact, but I think that's kind of stretching it.

I somewhat agree, the thing is that Impact can be defined as many thing. I think it is Ok to follow your gut feeling but also being critic about it. There is stuff I really like about some animes but I know it is not everyone taste. Some anime are really impactful on the moment of their release, but when the weeks goes by you realize, it wasnt that good, or maybe it was WAY good. I know it is not an anime but when I watched Blade Runner (the original) i hated it, I would have give it a 3/10 at the moment I finish it. The impact it gived me was bad, but when week passed by, I realize it was REALLY GOOD. So impact can be a double edge sword

For me I start: how much of a recommendation is this anime to anyone? And when I put some number I tried to compare it to other anime of the same scale: "Is this anime in the same quality of this other that I also gived it a 6?"

@Zarutaku Yes, that is why I really like to come back to my ratings from time to time and analyze whether they still hold up to the current opinions I have. I do think sometimes the impact is really obvious tho. There are certain shows that you just know are going to leave a really big impact on you from the moment you finish them or even before that.

@SeiyaTempest That is why I think that if you really care about your list or ratings you have to go back and review your previous opinions. People change.

@Nysse Yeah, that mkes sense. I just feel very strong emotions a lot when consuming media so I guess it applies far more often for me.

@Vaturna Of course I meant it more in the way of "positive impact", but it does go both ways. A shame you didn't like Frieren, but nothing can be done about that, people have different opinions.

I do understand that. It is just that I love to rate things and to keep lists and rankings about the stuff I consume, so that is a thing I'm very passionate about.
