For fucks sake, the intended order has always been the release order, even on a rewatch you should stick to it.

Ignore the dumb Chronological order, it was created by a noob who didn't understand shit about Steins;Gate, that order is not even chronological so ignore that shit and stick to the release order, it's the way the author intended it.

@Aniwatchr147 You forgot to add another episode there before starting SG0, the so-called dumb Chronological Order is Steins;Gate (1-22) > (23beta) > Steins;Gate 0 (1-23) > Steins;Gate (23-24).

But I don't recommend that order, it's not even chronological, and anyone who says otherwise apparently doesn't understand shit about Steins;Gate. This Chronological Order bullshit is cancer and I wish this shitty order die already, the only thing that shit is doing is confusing the newcomers.

In my opinion, watching it in chronological order is something you should only do on a rewatch. For a first-time viewer, release order is far and away the best option.

Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate : Oukoubakko no Poriomania (Epilogue)
Steins;Gate Movie : Fuka Ryouiki no Déjà vu (After-story)
Steins;Gate : Soumei Eichi no Cognitive Computing (Commercial comedy)

Steins;Gate : Kyoukaimenjou no Missing Link - Divide By Zero (Prequel's Prologue)
Steins;Gate 0 (Prequel)
Steins;Gate 0 : Kesshou Takei no Valentine - Bittersweet Intermedio (OVA - Bonus story)

Release order is the right order. For some reasons, new/blank accounts keep spamming about a weird mixup/"chronological" order with 0 shoved before the climax of the original... Just ignore them.

By the way, Steins;Gate is in reality Part 2 of a larger universe, called the SciAdv Series (https://www.kirikiribasara.com/what-is-sciadv/). You could go for the series of Visual Novels if you want the complete story.

Release order available via Chiaki site.

Please don't go start SG0 after episode 22 or whatever. Steins Gate 0 does not match the quality of Steins Gate and is boring aside from the final 3 episodes, it will ruin the flow of whatever you're watching. Finish Steins Gate and all OVA's if you want, then start Steins Gate 0

Technically both release and chronological are intended watch orders.

Obviously the first time you watch something it’s expected and intended to watch it in release order, but afterwards sometimes the intention is for people to rewatch the series in chronological order.

Jujutsu Kaisen technically has the intended watch order of Season 1, Movie 0, Season 2 episode 1-5, Movie 0, Season 1, Season 2 episode 6-23 because since they release the story out of order they expect you to rewatch it in order.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya aired out of order for the first 14 episodes, then when it came back with another 14 episodes the series re-aired in chronological order, with the original 14 episodes being put in the intended slots in the series.

Point is sometimes studios intentionally release something out of order so that fans can choose to watch it in order to get the full experience.

Steins Gate probably isn’t one of those series considering that you have to pause in the middle of episode 23 of both the original and 0 and flip flop back and forth a little just the full Chronological experience. However people definitely have the right to try. I personally enjoyed my Chronological Re-watch.

One series that definitely isn’t meant to be rewatched in chronological order is Horimiya.

Not really, no.

They just expect the viewer to not be an idiot, and understand and connect the events, despite being revealed to him out of order. Some authors makes this their own characteristic, purposely creating confusion and fake mystery by manipulating the timeline again and again (like Kinoko Nasu and his whole Nasuverse, or Nisio Isin and his Monogatari Series). That's not to say that it's never thought of by authors or people in charge of adaptations tho, which is why there may be edited re-broadcast or specials episodes.

I'm not too familiar with the situation of Haruhi Suzumiya, so not sure, but i heard the order is a little bit fucked in the Novel because the publisher pressed the author to write long stories for a full Volume instead of the short ones she was doing at certain points.

Actually, Movie 0 is an afterthought. Originally, it was just a stand-alone story of a few chapters, but with its popularity, it got a complete Sequel publication.

It still got reworked into the main story after its initial one shot days. It’s completely canon to jujutsu kaisen. The only point I was trying to make is that sometimes a series can release out of order with the intention to be watched in order later down the line.

Also the biggest part that I feel like you’re forgetting is that watching tv should be entertaining for people. No creator expects their show to only be watched once. Watching something that originally aired out of order chronologically gives an entirely new outlook on the series. And since the viewers would already be aware of all the twists, watching the series again in chronological order would keep things entertaining.

The viewers level of Intelligence isn’t the main focus when writing a work of art, it’s the enjoyment that the reader or viewer receives upon indulging. It benefits both the writer and the consumer when a story has multiple ways to be consumed.

So you’re wrong the writer doesn’t expect their viewer to “not be an idiot” they expect the viewer to be entertained and enjoy their work of art in however that way is.

Do you have such public example of intention tho ? The only one i can think of is (more or less) George Lucas and Star Wars, knowing that he defended multiple orders for multiple reasons, and was mainly limited by his mean at that time.

Sure, but no author would write his story thinking of what the viewer would see by actually messing the order of everything for a re-watch/read (that's especially true for Novels, and even more for Games). At best, they assure that everything is coherent, to have a better story as a whole.

Manipulating timeline is done to begin with to add a veil of mystery and suspense, while also allowing to retroactively introduce elements and reveals, such as character's backstories. Arranging the timeline back to its "correct" state just remove that, and actually does not entertain people more, but less (which is exactly why it was manipulated to begin with). Such works focusing on timeline manipulation often place foreshadowing elements that are hardly noticeable during a first time experience, but obvious at a second (standard) reading, giving the viewer/reader a new sensation of something he already knows (most well known example probably being Shingeki no Kyojin).

It's just much easier for everyone, including authors, to assure that a story has a good re-watch/read with its default and original order, (while not forgetting to keep coherence for the past/future scenes), than planning an actual re-arrangement... It's worse for Mangas, with most authors not planning their stories from start to end, but greatly improvising with each chapters passing.

On top of that, if we talk about works with a complexe timeline, they are written in that way because the authors expect the viewer/reader to feel a certain way, and, as far as i've witnessed, always are against directly untangling that timeline; they are avant-gardiste stories. Untangling it ruins all its essence. (Boogiepop, Kara no Kyoukai, Shingeki no Kyojin, Monogatari Series, ...) Changing the order for a more chronological one also may, and often does, goes against the intention of some specific stories, too. Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 are a prime example of it, to the point where people trying to mess the order completely missed the fact that 0 is a Prequel, happening before the first episode of the original...

More broadly, what baffles me is that such heated discussions about chronological orders always are about Animes. Did you already saw someone watching some Netflix show's seasons or chapters of a Novel out of order to put back the chronology in its in-universe state ?

ok, so, THE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER DOESN'T EVEN EXIST! it's a ridiculous thing created by anime onlies who don't know what they're talking about.

steins;gate 0 is a visual novel created and intended to be read after robotics;notes/chaos;child (in the release order of the sciADV series) or AT LEAST after base steins;gate. As for the anime, it's technically a sequel to the steins;gate 0 VN that can be watched standalone, so you can guess the watch order should be AFTER base steins;gate.

If you want to watch 0 as the so called chronological order, it would have to be a prequel, as it has to happen before we get to the worldline shown in the VN and anime, as we need the video that appears in both. Either way, it's just not worth it, as everything points out that it should be watched in the proper release order, as everything in sciADV

Alright, so there's a couple of things here. Each and every last one of the people here recommending the "chronological" order have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. This is a series with hundreds upon hundreds of hours' worth of content in several different mediums. The only ones who would ever dare suggest such a bafflingly silly order are anime onlies that lack the context of the full series. It's technically not even chronological because the entirety of Steins;Gate 0 happens before the original Steins;Gate even begins.

I'll start off by giving you some context as to what Steins;Gate actually is. In the first place, Steins;Gate is not supposed to be a standalone story. It is the second part of a much larger storyline known as the Science Adventure series or otherwise SciADV for short. The anime adaptations of the series just cut all their connections to make it seem like they have nothing to do with one another — as if they're nothing more than separate standalone stories that just happen to take place in the same universe. But in reality, they're really more like the different parts of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. They all have their own unique casts, settings, and central sci-fi focuses, but they build upon one another to make a wider overarching series narrative. And you often have pieces of foreshadowing spanning several entries and also recurring sci-fi concepts, plot points, and characters.

In visual novel form, the order to play the series in is as follows: Chaos;Head NoAH -> Steins;Gate -> Chaos;Head LCC -> Robotics;Notes Elite -> Chaos;Child -> Steins;Gate 0 -> Chaos;Child LCC -> Occultic;Nine -> Robotics;Notes DaSH -> Anonymous;Code. These are the six mainline games and the four most relevant side entries for the series. This series does have a tad bit of leeway for moving a few things around. But by and large, the best way to go through the series in visual novel form is in release order.

As I mentioned earlier, the anime adaptations for the series try making their respective stories as standalone as possible. And in the first place, almost all of their adaptations are horrendously rushed, with Steins;Gate being the notable exception, having received a whopping 24 episodes despite being one of the shortest entries in the series. So in anime form, I would just stick with the Steins;Gate sub-series and maybe Occultic;Nine if it interests you. For the Steins;Gate sub-series, the definitive way to consume the series is also in release order: all of Steins;Gate -> Egoistic Poriomania OVA -> Load Region of Déjà Vu -> Steins;Gate episode 23B -> all of Steins;Gate 0. You can potentially move Egoistic Poriomania and Load Region of Déjà Vu for after Steins;Gate 0 if you really want to.

But I do want to mention that there is a bit of a complication with regards to the Steins;Gate 0 anime. The Steins;Gate 0 visual novel is largely an adaptation of three different pieces of pre-existing Steins;Gate side material (Arc-Light of the Point at Infinity, The Epigraph Trilogy, and Annularly Chained Ouroboros). And Steins;Gate 0's anime is not a conventional adaptation of the Steins;Gate 0 visual novel, but rather a sequel to or final route for it. It still presents itself in a way that anime onlies can follow along just fine with the context of episode 23B. But it is nonetheless something that's already very hard to grasp the implications of in the absence of the context of the Steins;Gate 0 visual novel and its source side material. For somebody to go through the entirety of Steins;Gate 0 without even so much as finishing the original Steins;Gate, you're just missing way too much context.

In the first place, Steins;Gate 0 is a side entry in the Science Adventure series, not its own mainline entry. And it's something you are supposed to go through with the full context of the ending of the original story. For you to go through the Steins;Gate 0 anime without the context for how the original series ends, you're not going to be understanding the relevance of what you're watching in Steins;Gate 0 as you're watching it. Even after going back to finish the original Steins;Gate, you still won't fully comprehend the significance of a lot that went down earlier. And I've seen many of the people who go through the story in its so-called "chronological order" drop the series altogether in the middle of Steins;Gate 0 out of confusion, never to finish either one of the two series. Avoid the "chronological" order at all costs. Go through the story in release order.

I sincerely don’t know why this topic brings such heated debate when brought up. I also don’t know why people MUST watch things in the intended watch order? It doesn’t matter if a watch order is intended or not. The only thing that matters is that you enjoy what you’re watching however you watch it.

Obviously the chronological watch order is made by anime only’s. The anime itself has its own chronology that’s separate from the games. The games have paths you can go down, so the anime already had to order all (or most in this case) the different routes into one string of events. The only time we get an alternate route separate from the main string of events in the anime is with Steins; Gate 0. Since it’s an alternate path, that means when you reach the divergence point in the anime (which is a couple minutes into Steins; Gate episode 23) you can choose to watch either path A or B. Path A is the canon ending, Path B ultimately loops around to the moment of divergence. Once you reach the moment of divergence you can either Watch Path B and loop back around to watch Path A, or you can just watch Path A and watch Path B afterwards, or choose not to even watch Path B. I don’t care what order people prefer, and neither should anybody else.

If only you've spent time to learn writing plural forms of words instead of typing this self-gratifying nonsense you'd have actually done something useful.

FYI, the correct word should be "onlies" and there should be a comma after obviously.

And you forgot to write "know" in the first sentence as well.

If only you've spent time to learn writing plural forms of words instead of typing this self-gratifying nonsense you'd have actually done something useful.

FYI, the correct word should be "onlies" and there should be a comma after obviously.

If only you spent time taking in what I was saying instead of being a “grammar nazi”. However, thank you for pointing out the word I somehow missed. The only point I’m trying to make is that people have the right to watch things in whichever way they like. Don’t knock people down for watching something that’s designed to be entertainment in a different way than you. The ONLY thing that matters when watching tv is entertainment value. The watch order should only matter as much as it does to the person watching the show.

@EP1C_G4YM3R

I haven't read all of that but it's nice to know I triggered you enough to get a response. I would expect nothing less from a guy who has resurrected a one month old thread just because it triggered him.

Please keep posting to amuse me.

Are you silently saying that you’re a sub elitist? You think the dub is so bad that you have to specify to watch the sub?

Just like watch order, the language somebody watches something in should only matter to the person watching the thing.

@EP1C_G4YM3R He did not talk about subtitles or dubs, what are talking about?

Steins;Gate is a "sub-series" inside SciADV which is the main series

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn’t thinking about it like that. Considering that from an anime perspective Steins; Gate is its own series.
