What does everyone think of this first episode? I think that it was absolutely outstanding, an amazing start to this show. I really hope that everyone watches this and it really hits the big time, this crazy unique animation mixing deserves massive props. Love the premise too.

Just finished. Will say, the animation is top notch and definitely the thing that stands out the most. The creative freedom given to these animators really brought every moment to the next level. But the pacing was incredibly fast and it feels like you're thrown into everything at once. I don't know how to feel about that but I still felt good about that episode and hope it gets better overtime. Will say, the plot twists startled me

This was a gorgeous first episode with movie quality stylization. It's a cut throat company Ms J runs, but when fame equals super powers I can see why she would move fast in swapping out her star hero for a doppelganger.

That cliffhanger at the end was devious!

@DonghuaFan Yeah, the pace was fast but it mostly just felt snappy. Definitely wouldn't mind it slowing down a bit in later episodes now that things are more established, but the pacing wasn't the end of the world or anything to me.

The typical Chinese snappiness of animation and camera with Japanese voice is weird since my brain is expecting Chinese voice along with it, but other than that this is looking pretty good. Shit, the final part pulled a vocal "what?!" from me.

What caught my attention was the cream of the crop selection of VAs but seems like I'm getting into the plot as well

@SoZLuka honestly I just watched it with the Chinese dub - it's available as one of the options on crunchyroll, so I figured I may as well since I don't speak either language, so I should pick the native one that'll match the lip flaps.

@Eragonnogare It is very different from other Chinese shows I watch. Usually for most donghuas, season 1 is the slow burn and takes it's time introducing the viewer to things. This show just went for it and I appreciate it. And I agree with you. It would be good to slow the pacing down after establishing things in episode 1. So we will see. how the other episodes go.

I choose Chinese audio since it seems to match the lip, all in-anime text is in Chinese, and the subtitle translation workflow is Chinese to English, not Japanese to English. I watched TBH (2016) in Japanese (don't know if Chinese audio even exist), and Heroine (2018) is already a bilingual anime, which is convenience considering that I don't have to choose between two languages.

This seems to be a mixed between 3DCG and 2D handdrawn animation, with 2D preserved for a highlight moment. But the real MVP is the soundtrack composed by Hiroyuki Sawano.

This was absolutely spectacular animation, with amazingly stunning visuals to match. I had very high expectations for "To Be Hero X" and it did not let me down in the slightest.

Amazing first episode. We got to see into the lives of the hero's, and we also seen how their powers seem to work.

I was also very shocked to see that there will be 24 episodes! I am genuinely so excited to see more of this. Let me know what you all also think of it.

That was alright. I didn't quite expect the 3D animation to be present throughout the entire episode, but it's not terrible and I'll definitely get used to it. I assume this will mostly be for the Nice arc.

This world is a dystopia! I was getting Blade Runner vibes from the blimp projector. The fact that Nice felt the need to appear perfect by doing his signature hand sign even as he was jumping probably suggests the reason for his suicide. I fully expect to learn more about the previous Nice in future episodes. Enlighter has been suspecting Nice to be an actor "for a while", so I think the previous Nice was an actor as well.

Also, poor Lin Ling. The contrast between a constant hyper-capitalistic stream of advertisements promoting heroes as perfect personalities and a single 'loser' stuck in a dead-end job is hilarious, but it's also disturbingly relevant.

Finally, some additional information if you're interested:

In the original Chinese, the glitching of the screen right after Nice #1 walks off makes the sound "Nice-ce-ce-ce-ce". In Chinese, sǐ (死) means death, so it sounds like "Nice死死死死死".
A Chinese joke that I don't think will get translated very well is when the rank 249th hero, Enlighter, is mistaken for rank 250th. 250 in Chinese is 二百五, which also means idiot.
To Be Hero X is a collaboration between multiple Chinese animation studios, so expect the animation style to change a lot.

@phantomfandom for To Be Hero (2016) the Chinese audio original version does exist and is the original version (it's actually the better version too, they cut out some (often important) parts in the Japanese version), it's just hard to find, especially with English subs - I'd recommend giving finding it sometime, at least for the last episode, it's a big improvement. (To Be Heroine has the same issue with things being cut out btw, roughly 30% of the show was cut, and for that one there straight up isn't an English subbed version of the original Chinese cut and it's very frustrating).

But yeah, the original audio here is the Chinese, the series originates from China, though the production was fairly joint with a lot of cooperation. The mixed animation is super unique for sure, and the Sawano soundtrack is outstanding 100%.

We can say this one here is the perfect first episode and goes beyond anyone's expectations, sawano ost, 4 different perfect animation styles, incredibly well told fast paced story of a forced hero, perfectly introduces us to the story setting, incredible cliff hanger at the end.
From my experience this might be one of, if not, the best first episode of all time.

Amazing 1st episode. I had this mixed up with Capsule Project, so I thought it was going to be an anthology of one-shots (and the pacing did make it seem like it). I haven't watched Spiderverse or Arcane, but it seems like the 3D CGI is the same as those? I really like it. Wasn't too big a fan of the 2D style, but it served as a pretty cool transition for the moment. Sawano's music really fits here. I thought there was going to be some meta/4th wall thing since they were talking a lot about work culture; thought it was a reference to the animators. But it seems like it's all part of the story, after all. Knowing how some manhua and donghua can be, I was afraid it might be a bit too edgy/cringey, but it wasn't. If they can maintain this quality for all 24 episodes, I can easily see this being my new favorite (recent) anime. I hear the artstyle will change every episode, though.

China really has the money now to pump out good looking anime (can't say much to their 3D dongwhas since they looks ass to me), but thats mostly for first seasons (ie, The King's Avatar looks way worse than the first season was which is still the one of the best animated ones ever to come out)

@FlamingMangos It is an ensemble show where the 10 heroes are the main character but X is the most important character.

The show has already given us the episode calendar which corresponds to the heroes of the story. Nice will be featured in the first 4 episodes. X is featured in the last episode, but it is implied that there is an overarching story and that other heroes will appear in each other's episode (example Ghostblade is said to be featured in Loli's episode and X appears in Ahu's episode).

Also, how the hell is NOBODY mentioning the musical direction? The OST is perfectly enhancing the script and action, and that incorporation of Paragon during the boss fight was perfect. The transition into Inertia at the very end also put a whole new layer of meaning into the song; not everything is champagne wishes and caviar dreams in Heroland.

It is easily one of the most promising anime 2025 has seen yet. The storytelling, soundtrack, background music, and even the art style that fluctuates between 3D animation and Japanese 2D anime are amazing.

This feels quite similar to MHA in terms of its synopsis and initial setup, and I hope it will keep me hooked as MHA did (at least for the first 4 seasons). The only con I noticed was the sometimes unneeded background sounds during comedy scenes that feel awkward.

P.S. - The opening shown in the end was an absolute banger!!

They have combined Arcane-style animations and 2d animations very well.
The episode was very clear and good in terms of story, it was able to introduce a character nicely.
Their music looks like it's going to be freaking good, and the op sounds freaking iconic.
I hope it will be on its way to becoming this year's favorite anime with its unique camera angles and transitions.
