Nio and Hajime are attacked by the assassin, Kimura Jutaro. In the tense standoff, Nio proposes a discussion.

Jutaro begins to explain why foreigners should be excluded, saying that they’ve been deceived.

Nio has his first brush with a deadly foe! These guys are serious killers who have no qualms drowning children to accomplish their goals. Nio even tried listening to what this guy was saying, as much as Hajime wanted him to step aside. Its another classic example of good message horrible actions. Killing people isn't the way to get your point across so even if what you're saying is right and makes sense if you kill people in the process then you have to be stopped. Nio wanted to talk things with him but sometimes there's no getting through to a person. How the guy just launched Nio into the river then attempted drowning him was so cold. I didn't think Nio would die there but it was unsettling just seeing his head be pushed under again and again. Luckily for him Souji showed up and sliced open a throat to save Nio. The ninja accomplice running away was kinda funny at the end. Taro getting so worked up about Nio possibly being dead was sweet, he's actually grown very attached to Nio. The conversation between Hijikata and Nio to end the episode was very profound. Taking a sword is no small request, a sword is for killing so one must be prepared when using it. Now to track the other killers running amuck and confront the blonde boy who set Nio up!

Lots of animation shortcuts this episode. And the end was really cliche. I've enjoyed the series and haven't had too many issues until this episode. Hope it doesn't slide any further.

@phantomfandom Would they even know that? I'm not sure when that form of First Aid was developed. Of course, Japan is a sea faring Nation, but not these samurai.

@griddyweeb It seems to me to be more like a historic SoL with action elements, than an action series. I will agree that if the producers were going for a shonen, they are falling way short of the mark. Maybe they just need to make up their minds what they want this to be, and stick with it.

What an emotional episode! I really thought Nio had died by Jutaro’s hand, but after all, he managed to survive.

That attack won’t be forgotten and Nio must take his revenge sometime. That katana shows an historical passing of events.

So, now that we are six episodes in, it feels like I can break the silence.

The show really shines at seiyuu work, music, and the messages it conveys. I love how philosophical it gets still delivering historical aspects from this particular era.
Nevertheless graphically speaking... damn. I mean, it is not bad. The colors are good, designs are great! But the animation is very drafty sometimes. There are several scenes where characters just move around for no reason, and it does make it look cheap. And the fight scenes are very lame.
You can use the ending as a reference, where towards the end they start adding computer effects out of nowhere that really do not make any sense in the aesthetic they are trying to convey.

I guess what is tricky here is that at first look it would seem to be a swordfight-anime but as the story goes on you realize it's more about the life learning of Nio.

Anyway, I am all here for the drama, so I guess I will just overlook these little details and enjoy the ride.

Okita fanboying about the ninja after he killed that other guy in cold blood was the best part of the episode 😂

Okita didn't hesitate to kill the other guy.

Nio, on the other hand, still has a lot to learn, and I hope this experience helps him grow.

Nio and Hajime facing their enemy of assassin Jutaro Kimura of Choshu, who doesn't budge one bit and kills foreigners without a thought to stop the import of opium that they bring to Aizu that slowly rots them from the outside. But his endeavor being stopped by Satsuma's ninja Kyoshiro who comes to his aid, and not conceding to Kimura, who shows compassion for his intelligence to aid Choshu and backstab the Aizu and Shogunate instead.

OKita and Taro coming to the aid hiding behind the scenes to allay the matter, Kimura is actually willing to talk, but Okita letting the sword talk instead, he shows his skills impasse to kill him in one swing, while Kyochiro fled away from Soji and Hajime. That warranted Nio to think that he needed a real sword eventually, and Hijikata gave him one regardless, not just because of his over-empathy for the enemy's side.

Nio has matured, and it's time to face Seto, the child who set him up in this matter.

Seems the assassins aren't the four Hitokiri but original characters like Nio. Jutaro, a Samurai from Choshu comitted to "Sonnou Joi" due to the theory that Aizu is importing opium from foreigners. He's joined by a fellow assassin, the jovial Kyoshiro, a ninja who fights with two kodachi. While Hajime fights him, Nio is left righting Jutaro with only a wooden sword and is kicked into the river.

Okita and Taro make it in time. Jutaro is annoyed by an enemy who isn't an ideologue, Okita enjoys talking to a fellow swordsman with the blade instead and they engage in a fight to the death. The other assassin flees the scene.

Nio will fight with a wooden sword while keeping a metal one as his heart. Now they are off to see Seto who set him up.

Nio does have guts of steel, even in the face of absolute death he never back down. He understands that his opponents aren't wrong but he doesn't agree with the way they are doing it.

It looks like Tanaka and Nio have really became friends and maybe so did Nio and Hajime.
