Where did it all start? Was Kikuko Inoue really responsible for the whole thing? Or was it that visual novel Ever17? Is it a Japan-only thing? And is it a female-only thing? Because I've been hearing it more around women compared to men, especially with Yukari Tamura and the lead singer of fripSide. Even a character from Cardfight!! Vanguard says she's forever 17.

I'm not sure, but Yoshinoya from Hidamari Sketch is probably my favorite "forever 17" character.

I always thought it's just some common joke among Japanese women who are above 25yo as it's quite normal that some people likes to be seen as younger than their actual age.

Seems like an alteration of the phrase "forever young"

I heard the phrases 'forever 21' and 'forever 17' long before I got into anime. Something about women being at their most beautiful between 17 and 21 and wanting to preserve themselves, or the image of themselves as they were at these ages. Ofc, women are like good wine, get better with age (up to a point).

In regards to seiyuus doing that, yeah it probably was Kikuko Inoue.
Otherwise? Not really, eternal youth has always been something some people relate to.

I love when young people discover internet and encounter a meme on social media that's a phrase been around for ages, then ask why it just started yesterday?
with comparisons to recent anime they watched as the only references available....

@kutuya I was thinking more like 65 (look at Helen Mirren at 65, I would've), anywhere between 30-65 is the sweet spot imho.

It's a lighthearted way voice actresses like to maintain their youthful image and connect with fans. It's a playful phrase that some Japanese voice actresses, like Kikuko Inoue,(I read that as kinoko inu) have adopted to humorously claim they are perpetually 17 years old. This idea has become a fun joke within the anime and voice acting community
