I've stopped watching anime for extended periods a bunch of time, just watch it if you enjoy it, and don't if you aren't feeling it, that simple.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

@Aoi_hana Once every month or so I hide all of my non-necessary apps, log out from streaming services uninstall games and really take a moment to see what I'm going back to due to a false sense of obligation or what is genuinely something I'm enjoying. I reinstall things like Dark Souls once in a blue moon, play 5 deaths or so, and then uninstall because if I get into a loop of doing the same thing over and over again It becomes a chore. I know this is not the optimal strategy to beat a game but at the end of the day mind over body, we are in control of what we consume, do what makes one healthy and do what makes one happy.
@Overthinking_ This makes me think of the book Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. He basically said we should do a digital detox for a month and then gradually reintroduce things like apps and such, but obviously not all of those you used to have before.

@Aoi_hana Holyyyyyyy I've read that book and loved it. (and was an inch close to mentioning it in my reply) I used it as a stepping point towards re-evaluating my technology use. Real good stuff.

I see you have Honey and Clover on your favorites. I implore you to watch March Comes in Like A Lion It's by the same creator, and it easily has one of the best character writing off all anime in history. As someone that has seen well over 1,000 anime it's a show you HAVE to watch if you consider yourself an anime fan.

You will thank me later :)

Maybe you are a little depressed? When I feel down I kind of stop feeling anything about my hobbies.

Maybe just find another hobby, express it with in another way (like drawing anime, coloring etc), and for the love of God dont watch 3 seasons in one day.

@DoctorWasabi Alright, I'll add it to my currently watching. I know of this anime but never quite got to it for some reason. I'll give it a chance soon.

@LostSpectre Makes sense. I should indeed do whatever I like at any moment.

@KenaiPhoenix I doubt it. I know what depression feels like and this isn't it. I have interest in other activities, only watching stuff is annoying right now. I'll try a new hobby soon. (I don't think I ever watched 3 seasons in a day lol, that's probably impossible for me).

Chill. It's been years God knows how many I barely finish two or three episodes of a single anime. I know the feeling when you feel like you watched enough or you don't get excited like you used to be. Have things on your own pace. It's OK if you watched a single episode of a single anime of a whole year. Follow your mood.

Drink something.
Hug mama.
Eat something you like.
Think seriously of a diet and gym stuff.
DRIVE A FUCKING RAPTOR (Truck)! It's more fun than anime and any stuff.

We love anime, but seriously... fuck entertainment as a whole.

Do something other than anime.

I do Photoshop as a hobby. Not professionally. My skills are rusty as shit. At least I enjoy Photoshop a lot more than watching anime.

This is the original from volume 19 of the manga cover

Rendering it

What is wrong with watching anime as an adult? Anime is totally fine for adults to watch. Don't believe in the mainstream, anti-anime brainwashing. There is nothing wrong with watching anime.

keep touching grass, chilling with friends and what not. Dont force yourself to try and like a hobby... unless your in some sort of funk, then forcing yourself to do a bit of reading (or any activity) could be for the best. But for the most part, just do what comes naturally.

Having read some of your replies to people's suggestions it doesn't sound just like anime burnout. It's closer to a general burnout and even a depressive state.

I have been in the same spot for some time now,the only things I trully enjoy are music, smoking & fantasizing. That counts for both irl & entertainment.I grew up playing video games however over the past 2 years I barely play anything despite having an ever growing list on Steam.Movies & TV series despite growing up with them,I can't seem to find something I enjoy,it feels like I've already watched everything I wanted even if I know that isn't realistically true.Anime while new to the medium, ever since watching EVA (which was like my 7-8 anime few have come close but none can really surpass it) and finding something to enjoy here is even harder than live-action.As for life I don't even enjoy going for drives anymore, despite that being my obsession ever since I got my driver's license (in the first year alone I had over 30K mileage),walks used to be more enjoyable but now I even forget where I am going, mostly losing myself in music and that is on good days,on most days I go out only to the nearest store. Now for myself I am BPD so that somewhat explains it,however it is just gradually becoming a stronger hell and I don't think it's just due to getting older or mental illness,it's like something is constantly missing.

I doubt this was helpful in getting over it but as an introspection it could help you identify what it is you are missing.

Idk anymore.

"Any advice for someone who quit anime"

You next try to be focused on stories and ideas, not hype and popularity. like Mushishi, Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Robot Carnival, Genius Party ect.

This approach gives less burnout.

@Zayviur Yeah, I'll try going on long walks again, those were a lot of fun.

@DesuMaiden I also made the mistake of sharing some anime songs and talking about anime to my uni colleagues in the past 3-4 years. Let's say they weren't very welcoming to the idea that I like anime and am exposing them to it too.

@ComboSmooth You could say I'm in a sort of funk, but it's more than that. In any case, I'm reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen today. It'll be fun! ^^

@Bhavya7 You mean start watching dramas, TV shows and movies with real people? I did that and I'm now coming back from that actually. Because I don't feel like watching those either.

@SgtBateMan Haha very funny but my doctor said no psychedelics for me lol

@Morningstar991 Whoa, so you have BPD too? Do you think it's because of this that we can't focus on the stuff that matters to us? Or in this case, have any hobbies that last any longer? (I have BPD too and comorbidity with something else I won't mention). I do understand this perfectly. Something is indeed missing and I don't know what exactly. I've been trying to figure it out to no avail. It might not be just the mental illness that's at fault (or maybe it has nothing to do with it). Evangelion is really a good series, it's difficult to top that. Have you seen all of EVA (the new movies and the old NGE series and movies?)? It does feel like I watched a lot and can't watch any more, but I also know there are some titles I've been wanting to watch for a while and yet can't get into them. Such is life, I guess.

@alshu Thanks for the recs, I've added them to my ptw list. I will get to them eventually and you're right, I've seen Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (and read the manga) and it's beautiful.

@Aoi_hana Yeah I've watched everything EVA,it's what cemented anime as an interesting medium for me.I don't think it's a problem with quantity or even our attempts at finding more, rather it either feels meaningless or too overbearing until 1 day out of the blue it doesn't...and then it does again (or maybe there are just very few nihilistic titles in anime at least in my case.) With BPD it's not just hobbies that are hard to keep down but mostly anything life related, you go from 1 extreme (for example binging anime) to not watching any in the span of a few days and that applies to most areas.I used to take pills that somewhat (?) helped but not any more.I think we have something fundamental missing that while MI can cover to some degree the alienation and disconect that we face (and not to sound too elitist but also our intelligence and different interests compared to the masses) are what drive us into this desperate corner.

@Morningstar991 I'm thinking of re-watching some stuff including EVA. Though I'm not sure when that'll be done. A couple days ago I started this new anime called Ao no Hako. I read the one-shot manga and was about to read the full version manga too, last year. It's an okay series so far but the voice of the main male character annoys me. I do take meds but I doubt they're for BPD, I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to what my doctor prescribed me. They work though, so that's all that matters. It's true, it does feel like a desperate corner to be in, but sometimes everything's alright. I don't need to fake being fine or anything of the sort. I can just be me. Not sure if this is making sense, but forcing myself to watch anime doesn't work. It must be natural, or else I burnout even more.

The OP seems familiar..
Start Small and Pick a short series or movie. Something like "My Neighbor Totoro" or "One Punch Man" which doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Rewatch Old Favorites Sometimes rewatching an old favorite can reignite the love for the medium without the pressure of keeping up with something new.
Alternate between watching anime and reading manga or watching TV shows dramas etc. It keeps things fresh and less repetitive.

Join a forum discussions and talking with fellow fans can make the experience more enjoyable and less isolating. Mal forums or local anime clubs are be great for this.

Take Breaks, If burnout strikes again. it’s okay to take a break. Enjoy other activities and come back when it feels right.
Mix anime with other forms of entertainment. Read books, play games, or explore new hobbies to avoid entertainment burnout.

@Aoi_hana I understand you completely, I've done the opposite, mainly out of necessity since I live in a 3rd world shit hole that only recognises schizophrenia as a MI so had to learn myself what was wrong and how to mediate it,but I don't fake it either,I am who I am and that's that. It's a good character trait to have.As for anime or anything else unless it's of absolute necessity you don't have to and shouldn't have to force yourself. If you feel like it then do it,if not leave it.Doing things on instinct is always better. Also I am pretty certain we have derailed the convo but eh this is more fruitful than just hearing some say ''take a break'' or throwing anime suggestions when that's far from the original stated problem.

@RainyEvenings Do I? I don't know you back though, sorry.
I tried watching OPM before but wasn't my thing, idk why. I already watched Totoro, a long time ago. Of course, there are other movies and series worth watching, I'm on the lookout for them.

Local anime clubs is kinda impossible, this is why I'm on MAL in the first place, the community. I lurk mostly in clubs however. Rarely do I go into the main forums (usually because people are rude).

Yes, reading books sounds like a good idea. I do have a few books lined up for this last quarter of 2024 and even more planned for next year. I added a reading challenge on my The Storygraph account too. ^^
