If one was to "accurately" translate something from Japanese to English it wouldn't even make much sense. Which is why Subtitles are mostly used to localize dialog where much can be up for interpretation where as an example pronouns can be frequently omitted leaving ambiguity. Even some vocabulary and concepts do not have direct English equivalents. If one wants accurate subs, they might as well just rely on Romaji. |

- Hidive almost always has awful subs
- Cr is generally fine
- There are certain fansubbing groups who are really good and still active
- You can always search for fan subs that are available for an anime (There are spreadsheets that list every available fansub for A - Z anime)
- Start learning Japanese

Does it matter? The accuracy of subtitles hardly matters at all. It is not like anime makes any significiant difference.

| @billybub While it's true that Cr can also be awful at times (it really depends on what kind of translators are working on the specific show. Iirc, Onimai's TL was also absolutely horrendous and the translator kept bragging about her translation choices on twitter), I still feel that they're better than Hidive. Honestly, for Cr I try to look at it on a case by case basis, but if it's hidive, I almost exclusively avoid them. The state of subs right now is just sad because fansubbing groups today are not as prevalent as they were back then and also the general anime fan really doesn't care about the quality of subtitles. Some even go on to defend the poor translation choices. I feel like this situation will only become worse in the future. |

| @Fluffygreygrass thankfully my Japanese listening comprehension is good enough that I rarely need to solely rely on subtitles (one day my reading will get there) which makes seeing blatant mistranslations all the more irritating |
| I don't know what's the most accurate, but I can tell you what's the least accurate. The Hungarian fab sub for Idaten was hilarious, the slang was so over the top it barely even qualifies as Hungarian. |

| On Crunchyroll, multiple translators work on subtitles, so it depends on who translated your specific anime and their language skills. Since there don't seem to be clear guidelines or consistent quality, the results can vary. For a particular anime, I found that NF translations were more literal, with almost no omitted words (though they did not include honorifics, unlike Crunchyroll). However, this sometimes made them feel stiff and difficult to understand. In contrast, Crunchyroll often emphasizes localization, sometimes using colloquial expressions that are barely equivalent or directly inventing new sentences (which can be fitting or humorous but differ significantly from the original meaning). This means more creative intervention. Personally, I preferred NF's translations because they were more accurate most of the time, though both have their flaws. If capturing the dialogue's meaning well is important to you, the best strategy is to have both sets of subtitles available for comparison. If a line seems suspicious, cross-check to deduce which translation may be more near to original. You should never fully trust translations blindly. If possible, get the Japanese subtitles and a glossary on hand for additional verification. |

I really should be doing this to study Japanese... I really wonder how many people complain about bad subs after actually doing this, instead of just parroting what other fansubbers/randos say online. It's one thing to criticize distracting English slang in subs, but another to call out subtleties in languages that they have no knowledge of. |
